clan2_uk Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 I'm not one of those guys that is hooked on car stereo's etc, but do you not think that the quality in Subarus is pure crap ? I recently decided to keep my stereo for the time being at least and thought I would get myself one of those adaptors that goes into the cassette part and it lets you play your ipod through the car speakers. What happens when you push the tape into the stereo on the scoob, it pushes it straight back out again, it works perfectly in my wifes Clio and no doubt in every other car. I had previously bought one of those FM transmitter things and it turned out to be more hassle than it was worth. Does anyone have any suggestions ?
Gumball Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 speak to someone like Karps about this. he has done a fair bit of chavvy ICE so could help you out with some basics no doubt. i also tried recently, head unit was a nightmare to get a pocket for etc etc. speakers were too wide for the door etc etc took the lot back and spent it on the swally instead.
SEEVERS Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 Chris, the only speakers that fit into the doors of the new age are Infinity.... Drivers in Glasgow quoted me £260 to supply and fit crossovers in the front with tweaters and 2-ways in the rear.... The problem is that most speakers cones are too deep for your doors and thus prevent your leccy windows working properly. Hope this helps. Del.
Gumball Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 im off the idea now. cant be bothered anymore. thanks for the info del. george at drivers is a goat also. id rather give my cash to my landlord if i had to
andy_robertson Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 SKIDZ in falkirk are good at stereos and stuff give them a shout? and they aint that expensive!
oobster Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 I used MRD in Bathgate..... they are very good. It's a mostly Pioneer system i've got in my car, with 17cm + tweeters in the front doors, and 13cm speakers in the back doors. There's an Genesis 12" sub in the boot, and the whole lot runs of a 5-channel Genesis amp mounted in the boot. Up front i've got a Pioneer DEH-P77MP single-cd head unit (which plays MP3's and WMA files) plus a separate 6-disc changer mounted elsewhere. The ICE was one of the 1st mods i made, as the standard gear was just awful. Suggest you change the head unit to a single DIN + upgrade the speakers. Shouldn't be too expensive - rough guess @ £400-£500. All guarded by a nice little security system of course
st3ph3n Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 You can get a decent improvement from just a head unit, but only at mid volume. I done mine myself, quite easily too, but I'm going to need to get speakers in at some point too.
higgy Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 you can get a wide asortment of speakers in the front doors ( ive got 5 1/2 " ) pioneers in mine and the windows work just fine. The best thing to do with the standard head unit is to put it up in the attic of your house and put somthing that has a wider range of scope and if you need help just pm me ps if you need a referance just speek to swiggi Higgy
wrxmania Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 I've ripped all mine out - it was "pure p*sh" as they say in Glasgow! I changed it for a very good Pioneer Head Unit with Infinity components, brown bread sound insulation in the doors and deadening in the boot too. The standard components are VERY poor (8 watts per channel on the Kenwood head unit IIRC). BUT the sound in the Subaru in general is poor - it is not a good car to get a pure audio sound in at all. Brian
peter_macgowan Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 Just got a Blaupunkt Bremen MP74 and sound quality is superb. Its too powerful for the front speaker so they are next to come out. Got a quote for DLS stuff for the car. Front speakers, tweeters, crossovers, rear speakers and a sub for around £450 Read the ICE forums over on scoobynet there is some good reading there.
irish al Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 I had my subaru head unit and speakers out of the car two days after I bought it as it was driving me mad. If you fit a pioneer head unit with an output for a cd changer you can buy a Pioneer CD-IB100 Ipod Adaptor and just connect up the ipod. A Single Din Pocket from a forrester Part No. 66128SA000 for £12 looks very good and somewhere to hide the ipod. Just remember to put it in the bottom din. Got much same as oobster with mostly Pioneer system , 17cm + tweeters in the front doors, and 13cm speakers in the back doors, Two 12" subs and two amps. Had to make mdf spacers for the components but you can also buy puka ones from somewhere. Have a brand new subaru to iso harness going for a fiver if you want it. oobster were you able to fit yor rear door pods using the original mounting pins after fitting the speakers.
clutdav Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 I have hooked up an ipod adapter to my monitor headunit (single din) so that I can control the ipod off of my headunit. The problem with all the cheap ways of connecting an ipod to your car stereo is that you still have to control the ipod from the ipod - which can be tricky whilst doing 60mph on a back road. At the moment only Pioneer and Alpine do dedicated adapters so if you have one of their headunits you are fine - if not you may need to buy one. All I can say is that I now have 5600 songs in my car and I can control it all from my touch-screen. Plus the sound quality is excellent - the adapter in mine modifies the signal to mimick surround sound. The best £100 I have spent on my stereo. Here is a picture of my set up - the ipod connects in the glovebox to keep it out of sight and protected. It also charges the ipod when the car's ignition is on.
oobster Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 No idea Al - i just put the car into MRD Bathgate, selected the speakers i wanted according to my budget (and the ones that would fit) and picked the car back up again later that day!! I didn't enquire too much on what they done to make it all fit, as long as it sounded good I wasn't caring. P.S. Nice set-up you got there clutdav
clutdav Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 << P.S. Nice set-up you got there clutdav >> Ta very much. Did you notice I followed your instructions on how to post pictures in the thread?? Dave
st3ph3n Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 I have hooked up a creative Zen to my Pioneer Head unit (8600MP, yank version though so no RDS). It's not a good setup though as the Zen pumps out Headphone signal only, and the Pio wants a line-in. I'd love to upgrade to an iPod and the iPod controller, but can't justify the costs. So I just use my CDs, of which I have a ludicrous amount.
oobster Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 st3ph3n..... loving that icon u got there, from my favourite cartoon series Family Guy. Must dig out the DVD's again soon
st3ph3n Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 The new series is availalbe if you know where to look. Nudge Nudge. And so is the new film which isn't in the shops until September. And it was hillarious. Not that I'd download these things.
Stiks Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 I'm with Chris on this one.... "took the lot back and spent it on the swally instead. " LOL Save yer cash and put in a decent back box.... enough to drown out all background noise including a stereo. Makes taking phone calls on a bluetooth headset a pointless excercise too. Hence nothing interferes with the driving enjoyment 'moan the decats
