Lightened Pulleys and flywheel - Pro's Cons

Hey there all been pondering over what modifications route to take with my MY00 classic uk scooby. I was wanting to try and make my car as responsive as possible but without having to compromise the having the car lightened by interior stripped out etc. I had a few ideas given my limited knowledge of car tuning but am unsure whether i am going to see any noticeable gains.

Firstly i got to thinking about the power transfers from within the engine and thought that is the pulleys and the flywheel are lightened on the engine then surely i should see more usable torque from the existing bhp of the engine. This i believe should be due to the engine requiring less energy to set the pulleys, etc into motion and so maximising all available power to the wheels. I get a mixed response from folk i have asked thus far and as i have yet to find anyone who has installed these part i am unsure if they would be effective in getting the desired effect.

Has any one any advice or better yet actually tried out these lightened pulleys and/or a lightened flywheel?

Just had both fitted and it's been proven that both put more power onto the road, but lessen the torque of the motor overall. I think the car rev's easier, but nothing much more tbh.

I had the gearbox rebulit about 6-7 months ago and while I was at it got a lightend flywheel. Initially didnt notice to much difference but after driving the car on different roads noticed a difference in the way the car picked up. In a higher gear it did pick up alot faster. I did upgrade the clutch at the same time aswell.

There are 3 effects....

1. Yes the engine will be more responsive as there is less rotational mass, thus quicker response.

2. The fly wheel takes the engine over and runs smoother over the non combustion strokes, so less weight the more rough it will be and problems in acceleration can occur when the engine is under load. ie going up hill.

3. It can sometimes cause the engine to run slightly over on engine shut down however.

Its is still the way ahead trust me.....face-icon-small-wink.gif top secret.....just make sure you use a tried and tested combo.face-icon-small-wink.gif

On the classics you are supplied with 3 pulleys, but on the newage car's, it's only 2.

I got mine from Roger Clark Motorsport and they go for over £250.

according to the tuning tips in gran turismo 4 ( not the best bible for tuning i admitface-icon-small-smile.gif) another drawback is uphill performance.

as less energy is stored in the flywheel, this has an affect on uphill pull cos the engine speed will drop a bit more.

but cant comment myself as ive not done any of these mods.

edited as ive just noticed the man swiggi has already said this....ooops....i hate mondaysface-icon-small-blush.gif

I have a lightened flywheel and the only down side is that you lose the 'bimbling around town in 4th' ability. Below about 2750rpm in 4th the lack of inertia in the flywheel causes vibration.

Scoobymania do the GFB under driven pulley kit for around £150, I think.

I cannot say that I have noticed any signifigant difference with lightened pulleys or separately with lightened flywheel. I accept there will be a minor gain but I think it is so small it is probably not quantifiable but the engine probably revs up quicker when the throttle is blipped open.

Tried Scoobymania myself Harvey, as indeed, they are about that price, but they never had an in and were infact just about to change suppliers, so God knows when they'll get some in.

Otherwise Milsport do them too, but not under-driven, like mine. They were a bit more expensive than Scoobymania, but i will trust RCM's over another company who also make their own stuff.

Cheers for the Advice guys, may consider getting some of the pulleys installed some time soon as for the flywheel i think it may have to wait, quite suprising to find the compromise that you have to make for the use of a lightened flywheel when going uphill or at low revs. I guess that is the price you have to pay sometimes.

<< what sort of cost you lookin at for lightened pulleys mate if you dont mind me asking? >>

Not sure was still shopping around but have seen them in the order of around £160, if you could offer me some thing better than that.
