Hepy Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 Thinking about fitting one of these to my P1. Are they easy to fit, and do I require a new fuel pressure regulator to be fitted also? Cheers, Hepy.
drb5 Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 VERY easy to fit and yes, an FPR is needed, otherwise it will overpower your OE one and you'll use full like a 700BHP R34.
drb5 Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 Not particularly, unless you've done it before. Easiest way, is to take the turbo out, although it CAN be done, with a bit of swearing and cut knuckles, with the turbo in place.
harvey_smith Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 I don't want to be controversial but I do not agree. Firstly why do you want to change your pump? If you are going to change it, do you have any means of monitoring the AFRs before and after? Why not fit the pump and see what happens. It may be preferable to having an FSE FPR that is erratic. There have been a lot of FSE FPR reg failures and it would be better to rely on the O/E if it is doing its job satisfactorily. A variable FPR will assist you in adjusting fueling but that might not be what you are trying to achieve. The SX FPR is reliable and versatile but can cost around £150. The Walbro 255 lph pump is around £95 posted from AS Performance.
WUZ Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 Harvey - I think drb5 is trying to say that too many people in the know (Bob Rawle for one!) are saying that the 255 pump will overpower the standard reg and cause problems. If your going for over 320 on the P1 it would be prudent to change the pump and the regulator! Russell
drb5 Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 Wuz, you got me. Harvey, no probs. Was waiting on Hey replying again, just to let know what FPR was needed, remap is needed and monitoring devices are a must.
Hepy Posted March 29, 2005 Author Posted March 29, 2005 Sorry, I should have mentioned that the fuel pump is just one of the mods i'm considering. What I should have asked was, if I fit gt spec headers and decat+remap, is a new fuel pump advisable. If that makes any sense.
harvey_smith Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 Wuz : If you check with Bob Rawle you will find that his thinking on after market FPRs has changed recently. I have been involved with several FSE fuel regulator problems in recent months, as has Bob. If the new pump overpowers the O/E reg then change it but chances are that it will not and mapping with a new pump and O/E regulator is preferable to working with an erratic FSE for instance. There is the possibility to save £150 on an unnecessary purchase. I do agree that if you are upping the BHP signifigantly then the pump needs uprating.
drb5 Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 I agree, but after what i've heard/been told, i wouldn't have suggested the FSE anyways. Especially when Alyn at ASP sorted me an SX out for a VERY reasonable price.
