Bladerider Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 This afternoon, I received a notice of compulsory redundancy. I was offered 30 days notice, or wages in lieu. So, with immediate effect I am now unemployed. I need a job!!! Does anybody know of any employer hiring at the moment. I'll do anything (within reason). I'm qualified as a debug technician but ideally I'd like to get out of the electronics industry and try something new.
colinj Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 Retrain as a Sparky or Plumber - our tradesmen make mega bucks and are never short of extra work on the side! I recently came out of a Industrial Lab Technician type role (Agency employed, sh@t conditions , sh@t company etc - I really couldnt see a future in it!) into the building trade as an Assistant QS for a Plumbing & Heating firm. Took a bit of a drop in money but im working my way up again I know ive done the right thing changing! Try looking in local papers, Job center, S1Jobs Good luck to you anyway
gordon_kerr Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 where you based blade?I could be able to help depending on location!!
Bladerider Posted February 10, 2005 Author Posted February 10, 2005 I'm in Ayrshire. I can't understand how it could be cheaper for the company to bring in contract workers to replace us. The contract techicians get paid a lot more the we did. When I first started, there were about two dozen techs. Every time somebody left, they were replaced with a contract tech. On Tuesday there was only two of us left. We were both called into the office and told it was cheaper to hire contractors. Therefore was not in the company's interest to have technicians on the payroll. So we were sacked right there and then. Well, they did offer to let us work out our notice period, but at £70 per week travelling costs I decided it was best to bale out. I've just found out, lob seekers allowance is only £55 per week. My bills alone are £800 per month. I also need food, so the absolute minimum I could survive on would be five times the JSA payment. I have enough money to get by for about six weeks but after that, if I don't have a job i'll have to sell the bike and the car. To put things in perspective. Yesterday in Ayr, I saw a joung girl, sitting curled up on the pavement, obviously living rough. Her clothes were filthy her hair was filthy and she looked so sad. She looked at me as I walked past and we made eye contact. In that brief moment, a lot of thoughts went through my mind. I couldn't help feeling sorry for her. Normally I just walk past people like that, but there was something different this time. I felt that no matter how bad things are going for me, there are always people much worse off. So I just turned round and went back to her and gave her all the money I had in my pocket. It wasn't much, just under £4, but she was so grateful. I wish I could have done more for her.
dougster Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 You should have got Avril Lavigne's autograph Dave, was she not playing the Gaitey last night!!!!??!!!! Seriously though, I'm still in the same boat but my incapacity payments are a little higher but still not enough to pay the bills. Register with all the companies and if you want to give me a bell I have other ideas that might suit you. I am still doing my LGV training but it is taking WEEKS before I even start driving. If something comes up before then I will need to take it and I have about one interview per week atm.
