wilky Posted January 22, 2005 Posted January 22, 2005 Just installed a greddy electronic boost controller today, its very nackerdooky! Was having a spirited drive along the A2 towards Dover, I thought to myself lets have a wee blast and see whats whats, sank the boot and off we went, I thought, "My, isnt she going well!" until I glances at the controller and saw my boost getting very close to 2 bar!! I nearly keeched my tweeds!! Upon reading the manual properly it would appear that I had wiped the facory setting of 0.5 bar and given it a ridiculous limit. Dont seem to have damaged anything but it was a bit of a shock, knocklink didnt christmas tree though which was peculiar. Im never going to "Plug and play" again without reading the manual properly! Callum
the squiggle Posted January 22, 2005 Posted January 22, 2005 2 bar and no christmas tree effect on the KL, you lucky, lucky man Grant
wilky Posted January 22, 2005 Author Posted January 22, 2005 I think it was because my revs werent that high, about 4-5 grand but the boost, jesus wep! I was so so lucky to have spotted it.
ANDYJDMSTI Posted January 22, 2005 Posted January 22, 2005 Steady Glasshoppaaaa!!!!!!! "manual boost contlol may be a good ting but rike Japanese man of war.................can sting borrocks vely much if dislespected"
wilky Posted January 23, 2005 Author Posted January 23, 2005 Got it sussed, I have resricted peak boost to 1.1 bar which Im mapped for, I can make it spool early or late, crank it up or turn it back, will allow me to map for 1.4 bar and run that boost with my standard map sensor, a 3 bar map sensor would have taken away one of my rows in the link map which would have been pants. Also, with the 3 port boost solinoid gone and better pipes and the plastic restrictor gone, things are far more exciting, Ill have to fiddle with it for a while but once I get the hang of it and get it set up, I recon she will be much quicker than her current rapid self, even with the current map profile. Andy thank you for the Japanese Philosophy, I have also head "Wise man wif gucci boost controller, is easily a fool with blown engine." So Im going to Caw canny until im up to speed with the thing!
jamie_wood Posted January 23, 2005 Posted January 23, 2005 Just took my Apexi boost controller off today Back to STD boost of 1.2 again Still fast though, so thats OK
wilky Posted January 23, 2005 Author Posted January 23, 2005 Dont you feel things were a little better with the controller even at 1.2 bar?
jamie_wood Posted January 23, 2005 Posted January 23, 2005 Not really, Its just the same I thought. I had it set for 1.6 peak with the faster spool up I never really set it for 1.2 and played with it. I just went for the kill!!!! TBH I didnt relly play with it that much
wilky Posted January 23, 2005 Author Posted January 23, 2005 Suicide, at that level I would want to have a listen and hear what was going on, you should play with it at 1.2 bar it would make a difference.
jamie_wood Posted January 23, 2005 Posted January 23, 2005 Too late, pulled it out today. If the car isnt sold in a few weeks or so then Im going to upgrade the brains of the car and add a few other bits n bobs
ANDYJDMSTI Posted January 23, 2005 Posted January 23, 2005 Just what make of "brains" are we talking here Jamie?????
jamie_wood Posted January 23, 2005 Posted January 23, 2005 Im still in the hunt. Would have to support ALS and water injection, launch control too
jamie_wood Posted January 23, 2005 Posted January 23, 2005 Hope so!! Even if its not on the current car
wilky Posted January 23, 2005 Author Posted January 23, 2005 Well, I was out today and I got the controller set up reasonably well. And I can definately say that the car is much quicker with the same level of boost, it is spooling the way a modified car should and the horrible lag that I thought was the price I paid for a FMIC is much less. Dont know if this is because the waste gate is staying closed longer and opening quicker, or because the pipes are a better quality, shorter and not restricted. On the down side she needs a remap badly because the knocklink is sparkling like liz Hurleys engagement ring under hard acceleration, and if you listen you can hear what sounds like ballbearing being bounced rapidly off the block, which is the dreaded det, not bad, but in fighter pilot mode its definatly there, so Ive set the low boost setting at 0.8 bar and no megga spool up, and am going to use that until I get mapped. I even resisted the temptation to chase a motorbike!! I am chuffed Callum (ps The controller memory logged yesterdays peak boost fright! its 1.76 bar!!!!!)
Grovit Posted January 23, 2005 Posted January 23, 2005 Wilky - is yours a WRX - have you fiddled with the internals at all......? Just doing a bit of research into what people are doing - Hoping to step up the power a bit on my Classic later on in the year.....
spooks Posted January 23, 2005 Posted January 23, 2005 Got a pic of a certian wagon having a boost spike of over 1.8 bar Ya gotta laugh at mine it's so low it hardly moves my Defi guage Spooks
wilky Posted January 23, 2005 Author Posted January 23, 2005 Safe is good, these people who have huge power have the facilities to rebuild and the knowhow etc, people like us need to watch what we are doing because its an expensive mistake to run too much boost if your internals arent uprated and your fuel etc isnt mapped for it. Grovit, no my car is a 95 STI RA and the bottom end is a new sti 7 one with a semi closed deck block and slightly different rods and pistons than the classic sti ones. The man who built it told me not to run anymore than 1.4 bar boost, although stronger its still a standard set up. I would be a fool to disregard his advice. If you are going to uprate your car, you must keep it within the bounderies dictated by the internals of your car or its life will be short lived. There are people on here and other sights whose knowledge is far greater than mine, my advice to you would be to do some digging, find out the safe working limits of modification your car would take and work within them, if your not happy, dont do it until you have all the facts. The net is full of hard luck stories brought about not by stupidity but by people uprating cars and not knowing the whole story, which leads to an early retirement of thier engine, yes do it, but do it safely and always look at how old the engine is and how many miles you have. Good luck! Callum
Grovit Posted January 23, 2005 Posted January 23, 2005 Cheers Callum !! Yep - don't worry - I'll be researching my ass off before I start fiddling about with the engine - as you say there are many, many stories out there of blown engines and emptied wallets. Even before I tackle the heart of the beast, I'll be upgrading to 4 pots to make sure I can stop !! Was just curious to see what your one was, sounds like a hell of a machine - will no doubt have a gander at it at some point this year (runs / meets etc) Chris
wilky Posted January 23, 2005 Author Posted January 23, 2005 Would be happy to take you for spin one day, Its a bit of a beastie! But Im sure there are others who are far more modified than mine. Its How you drive it that counts. I gave Dougster a shot of her when I had finished my upgrades and had to stop him halfway because he was scareing me!! And thats the truth!! Callum
wilky Posted January 23, 2005 Author Posted January 23, 2005 Grovit, if you fancy brakes far better than four pots, but cannot afford brembos, APs, Alcons etc, drop me a pm and Ill tell you what I can do for you.....
