paulc555 Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 hi all picking up my sti3 import in 2 weeks time...still not sure about this knocklink business....do you only need to fit one if driving hard..are they really necessary for everyday to and from work driving....okay if i was going out for a blast (not that often) i'd top of the optimax with an octane booster..but what about everyday use....could think of other things to spend the £130 ish on...thanks help...!!!!!!!!!!!!!
phil Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 You will need to run your car on both Optimax and Octane booster all the time unless you are having it remapped for UK fuel The knock link will obviously detect any detonation ........... which is an engine killier
paulc555 Posted October 25, 2004 Author Posted October 25, 2004 thanks phil so its knocklink, optimax and octane booster...oh the wife will be pleased....so its a definite no no....to motor on without one then.... oh dear i can feel another fight coming on......do i need to fit it straight away then?? or can i do this as my first scooby DIY task...
phil Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 You should be ok without the knocklink running the right fuel BUT BETTER SAFE and SOUND
johnnyr6 Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 I'd defo fit a knocklink. It's an easy job to do yourself if you can do a little diy but if you think £130 is a lot just wait till you start running the thing as they are defo not the cheapest cars to run. Be prepared for a constantly empty wallet.
dave_morgan Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 You should definitely get one. All it takes is one bad tank of fuel, and could could end up with a 3-4k engine bill !! I've been there and the £130 is pennies compared to the alternative! As Phil says, you SHOULD be ok, but I got a bad tank on Sunday night and the knocklink was blinking away like a barsteward! One extra slug of booster, and all was well again. The sti 5 (what my p1 is roughly based on) seems more badly affected than others, but it's money well spent on any scoob IMHO. Fairly easy DIY job too. Allow one to two hours probably. Don't let it put you off the scoob though, it just gives you peace of mind that you can thrash away and know that all's well under the bonnet. Dave
