Montythegod Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 Picture the scene. 2nd gear overtake .... change into third..... a bit of a miss from the engine and then..... no power... Pull over to the side of the road and engine cuts out.... Turns over and doesnt start (sounds different) I know the following . Its got fuel (lol) It turns over It didnt over heat The cam belt is intact and the belt rotates on turn over (taken the cover off) It sparks on turn over (that hurt testing that) No oil leaking Fuel pump pressurising. Slight fuel smell on turn over and no attempt to fire up 125k on the engine the only mods is a k&n air filter, equal length exhaust header, de cat centre section and big backbox. Tomorrow I will remove the plugs and compresion test it (if I can get my tester down there) will let you know Any ideas will help me (if it was a cosworth i'd have fixed it by now .... any ideas on a 2.5 legacy turbo conversion ?)
mark_sheepwash Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 Monty was that you being towed by a polo along the top road past ash tree pub and then down ash tree lane? Sorry don't know what the problem could be - I can only fix computers not cars
tannan Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 will it still run if the maf is foobar as you have k&n indu on there
Montythegod Posted October 23, 2004 Author Posted October 23, 2004 Yup it was me being towed, it was an Audi estate towing me,, lol I have previously tried the car with the maf sensor unplugged (briefly) and it started and run ok.. I have tried to start it unplugged tonight and no luck Anyone got a copy of a technical manual on cd I can pinch ?
HOL Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 Hmm, Normally these sort of things are Electrical. You can try my STI My98 MAF if you want? Or bring your MAF round to my side of the estate and stick it on the 'R' Ill be around most of the weekend. Have PM'd you a mobile no' I also have a Brand new 2.5 engine in a Subaru Box
Montythegod Posted October 23, 2004 Author Posted October 23, 2004 thanks hol, no pm yet, but I have pm'ed you with my mobile... will take you up on the offer downloading a few tech manuals as I speak
Montythegod Posted October 23, 2004 Author Posted October 23, 2004 Plugs out, compression test time.................... 140 psi from both the right hand cylinders 0 psi from both the left hand cylinders .. even with a spark plug in no engine light , will be checking the codes later but went for compression first as the turn over sounded different
Montythegod Posted October 23, 2004 Author Posted October 23, 2004 Cam cover off... timing marks on left hand side way out not looking good Re aligned them all and.... still no compression and the cam pulleys turn a lot easier than the ones on the right hand side... looks like I may have to take it out day 2 tommorrow but it looks like it may be internal
HOL Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 Hopefully you are just looking at a couple of bent valves that are letting the compression escape. Otherwise, I found these on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...ssPageName=WDVW No STI Cams though! But I think the STI valves are bigger.
Montythegod Posted October 24, 2004 Author Posted October 24, 2004 Thanks Hol, i am racing to get the engine out before the auction ends..... Just off out to get the hoist its all unbolted and ready to come out... Checked compression again this morning to be sure and yup there is definatly nothing on the left hand side even after doing the timing
Montythegod Posted October 24, 2004 Author Posted October 24, 2004 Update.... engine is out, cam cover is off, cams and followers are out... all seems ok so far. engine stand turning up tomorrow so will strip it in the week... watch this space
Deano 666 Posted October 27, 2004 Posted October 27, 2004 mont its dean here i have a engine stand if you need one. also i can offer my services in the motor trade to you if thay are required. let me know if i can help. you have my number.
Montythegod Posted October 30, 2004 Author Posted October 30, 2004 Only got the stand tonight, thanks for the offer Dean m8..... I'll have it on the stand tomorrow and in bits.. will update as I go along Hol, If its the pistons looks like you may have sold your block .....
Montythegod Posted October 30, 2004 Author Posted October 30, 2004 Hehe,, the offending cylinder head is now off.. have a look at these pics.. can you guess what happened ? Check out the family of valves hanging around
Montythegod Posted October 30, 2004 Author Posted October 30, 2004 Shopping list as follows : Sump Gasket Head Gasket set (LH head) Head bolts ? Oil return pipe from filter to right hand side of block Water supply pipe across the top of the block from left to right. Valve stem oil seals Cam belt Cam Belt tensioner (i think this is what went) Spark plugs Oil and filter Inlet and exhaust gaskets oh and some exhaust valves Anyone got any of these items lying around.. will be calling Walldonways in Maidstone on monday for prices. It looks like the tensioner went, made the cam belt loose and the timing jumped about 5-8 teeth on the left hand side, causing the exhaust valves to hit the top of the pistons and bend !
mark_sheepwash Posted October 31, 2004 Posted October 31, 2004 Monty if you're an SIDC member you get 10% off parts at Barretts of Canterbury - if you're not then I am so if you want me to get the discount then let me know - car is in for a service next Friday down there cheers Sheepie
HOL Posted October 31, 2004 Posted October 31, 2004 I think I have heard of tensioners failing before. At least it is cheaper than the alternatives. Still; going to be a couppe of hundred you'd rather not spend though

Xtreme Scoobies Posted November 5, 2004 Posted November 5, 2004 Just before it all goes back together get the heads & block checked, just to make sure they aren't warped. You may need to have a skim. Its also worth running all the valve seals to make sure they are true......oh & checking the valve seats, replacing the colletts etc
Montythegod Posted November 10, 2004 Author Posted November 10, 2004 I agree with you, is this a service you offer, if so how much to check my heads over if I send them to you ? monty
