ECU's and MAPPERS

Recommended Posts

Just coppied this off the MLR, thought it might help. Please feel free to add contact numbers for anything listed or mappers and ecu's that are not covered.face-icon-small-smile.gif

Look, there is some crap going about who can map what ECU.

ECUs are ECUs. Take your pick. Mappers vary. Some have motorsport skills, so good at safely extracting high reliable power. Others are better at road mapping, maximum power, with economy and reliability. Others are crap

ECUs in cost order

PE Remapped ECU

-----------------------

Fine for a mildly modified EVO, allowing fuel+ignition to be remapped. Requires an external boost controller for boost, negating the cost benefit. Makes much more sense to get a proper ECU.

ECUTek

---------

Variation on the PE theme - same thing applies here. Get a proper ECU.

Link

-----

Cheap and cheerful, but covers most mapping requirements. Some good results from people here. Includes data logging of knock, egt etc. Not widely used on EVOs here and support is not very good.

Autronics

-----------

Good allround ECU with built in Map sensor for extra savings. Deals with just about all the needs of the EVO, with good support from Mark Shead for mapping. Not too sure on hardware support, being Australian based - but sure Mark would sort you out.

GEMS

-------

Good general functionality. Lots of mapping resolution, and flexible control for ALS using air bypass as well as the usual jacked-open throttle. Good injector response times. Average software, tricky to get working at times. Good interface to datalogging and the GEMS dash is pretty good if you need that functionality. Robust and reliable, good support from GEMS Uk.

Motec

-------

Wide range of ECUs from low end piggy back M4 to the M88 Pro. Good thing about the Motec is that it is completely generic, unlike AUtronics and GEMS which are modules for a specific car. Bad thing is lots of wiring, so expensive to buy and install. Something you could take with you from car to car though. Very fast controls, very well support by Motec in Banbury. Widely used in motorsport, and great dash (the Motec dash and datalogging are lovely) as well as interfacing to their Wideband lambda display.

Pectel

-------

Motorsport favourite, does far too much - shouldn't even talk about it. Very expensive, very clever, the daddy.

MAPPERS

=========

In my opinion, a decent mapper must do the following :-

1) Use a reputable wideband Lambda sensor. In my opinion the Motec is the best unit. FJO is decent, as is Lumenition and Autronics. Some ECUs can log lambda closed loop if you have a wideband sensor

2)Use det cans, electronic preferably. WOrst case, use a knock link sensor

Here is a list of mappers and ECUs I know, and what i think about them. Add your own comments. This is my opinion, based partly on first hand knowledge , and from other people's first hand experience. There are MANY MORE mappers, some who have EVO experience. Please add to this thread with your views and experiences, and any additional names

Steve Simpson  07836635001

------------------

Generally good, particularly with rally cars. Road car experience is improving. Main weakness is that he doesn't spend enough time with the cars, and can't solve issues outside of mapping (e.g. boost leak etc) which some of the others can. Has had alot of very good results, and some iffy ones too. Can do Motec, GEMS, AEM and Autronics. A very, very nice guy.

Frazer Mackellar

-------------------

Very good reputation, mostly on Motec. Can map GEMS as well. Really is very busy flying around the world mapping high power cars, Listers etc. Hard to get hold of, and his mapping is on the aggressive side to get maximum power. Not really that good at road car mapping, but great at motorsport mapping - so off boost and cruise will be poor. Very, very hard to get hold of!

Mark Shead

---------------

Excellent reputation. Mostly known for Autronics, particularly as he sells them. Can also map Motec. Refuses to map GEMS as I think they ****ed him off in the past with technical issues regarding their software and his laptop. Twist his arm, he might say yes. Particularly good at mapping road cars, economy, cruise etc - I don't believe he has much motorsport experience, and does tend to map cars for safety first, which is perfect for road cars.

Mark Yeldham, Mountune

-------------------------------

Superb reputation under Mountune, and can map GEMS, Motec or anything else (Pectel etc). Really, really impressed by their work. Their mapping is for ultimate power with as much reasonable reliability, and are aggressive in the same way as Frazer. Particularly good at mapping turbos on boost etc. All mapping is normally done on the dyno first, then on the road, never on the rolling road. They may do road only mapping on request. Very good, particularly if you want your engine built at the same time!

Sam Elassar, Dentist

-------------------------

Having worked with quite a few people now, Sam is actually a very, very good mapper. He can map GEMS, Autronics and Link. Has set up quite a few scoobies and evos, including mine and moses. Very clued up on mapping and ECUs. Is wasted as a dentist IMHO

Mick Kehl

-----------

Mick claims to be able to map all ECUS and previously worked for Motec with the name "Motec Mick". I have only sketchy comments about his work, which are not positive, but I would prefer someone else to provide more solid information.

Phil Marks

------------

Phil is a very good engine builder with lots of experience. He maps the Extreme cars as well as Rally cars worldwide. He is not the best at mapping cars for the road! Does specialise in GEMS, and believe he can do Motec also. Would not chose him for road cars, but possibly a choice for competition/rally cars.

Simon Norris  01249712024

----------------

Simon is able to map Motec and GEMS, and maps the cars on the road. Not as experienced as the guys who do it day in day out, but can certainly set your map safely, or make fine adjustments. Simon normally starts with a base map from Frazer.

Clive Seddon, RC  08452307667

---------------------

Clive maps Apexi Power FC and S-AFC. Appears to achieve good results. I believe Clive maps all of their conversions on the road (hello officerface-icon-small-wink.gif) and appears to have produced some great results with AntsEvo and Spudgun to name a few.

Summary

------------

IMHO.... if you want a road car, Autronics does all you need and Mark has the right skills for road car mapping.

If you want a track car, get your engine builder to map it on the dyno - Mountune are superb, so is Mr Norris and so on

If you already have kit, STICK WITH IT - get a mapper you are happy with. Any of these guys shoudl be able to work with any of the ECUS if they have access to the software/cables
