Ring trip ?

How about a trip to the RING via the ferry from Rosyth ?

Spring next year would be my vote (March or April).

JohnS - what do you think ? - I'd be up for the organisation as long as there were some willing peeps to assist

I found pricing the ferry from Rosyth is pretty expensive. You'd be quicker & cheaper driving to Dover if considering this trip IMHO. I was looking at attending the European GP next year and had priced everything and I'm sure the saving for driving to Dover instead of the Rosyth ferry was about £150 IIRC. Plus over the whole journey, the time you'd save would have been around 10-12 hrs as that ferry takes 16hrs single trip. You could drive to Dover, take Channel tunnel or Seacat then drive into Belgium quicker as well.

Its a brilliant idea though. Don't know if its worth considering the trip to incorporate the GP as well? Its the last weekend in June 2003.

Eric,

sounds like a top idea to me. The Elises go on a regular basis, and have sorted the best way to get there from Scotland in terms of ferry times, journeys times, prices etc.

I'd rather spend longer on a boat relaxing, than driving round the M25 etc to get to Dover, and also the M6 around Birmingham !!

I was also thinking about a grand tour of Europe next year (say 7 to 14 days), taking in a different track every 3 or 4 days, going through France, Spain and Germany. Still at the provisional planning stage at the moment though.

Not got your sea legs then

I'd be quite happy sitting on board at the bar for a few hours, before retiring to bed for a good night's sleep

I could be into this - never driven abroad though, so I'll need to practive over here LOL!

Seriously, sounds like an excellent idea. I'm with the ferry from Rosyth idea for peace and quiet.

John sums up my way of thinking.

I'm afraid that I really can't stand hours of motorway bashing. I liked the idea if the Rosyth ferry because of its proximity and the the civilised sailing times (leave late afternoon and arrive late morning).

A few beers and a decent night's sleep or 600+ miles of motorway and then a train journey ? ...

... now let me think ... yup I'll pay the extra and turn up fresh as a daisy

... but hey, each to their own ...

What about the ferry from Newcastle? It leaves about 5.30 and you arrive in Holland about 7 or 8 the following morning. Very reasonable fares too.

Just a thought and it isn't that far into England to travel either!

A-J,

yes the Newcastle ferry is another option we'll have to consider. It's not too far away if you live near Edinburgh, as it's only about 3 hours or so drive there, but from Aberdeen (where me and Numptie live), it would be a 5 hour minimum drive. We'd need to work out the overall costs, journey times etc.

Chances are we'll have a number of options, and people can choose the route that suits them best

Newcastle is only an hour and a half from Edinburgh and from Glasgow 2 and a half hours! Only I have done it in a lot less!

I definitely want to go on this as I have always wanted to go !

It depends on which side of the Forth Road bridge you start, and at what time of the day

I've no doubt that it's a short journey when the roads are quiet, but the last time I did it, we got caught in traffic at Newcastle, and also at Edinburgh

Anyone else up for this trip ?

Derek,

do it on the cheap and come as a passenger/co-driver with someone else. There will be quite a few passenger seats available no doubt!

I did Hamilton to Tynemouth in 1 hour 50 and that was including getting stopped by the police for speeding. My mum had had a heart attack and the police were very nice and I only got afixed penalty and 3 points instead of a ban!

My folks live there so I know the roads VERY well now and a few wee back roads that are fun!!

I'm definitely up for this and it depends how I get on with my course as to what I will be driving! Can I take the wee fella on ?? Could be interesting for my passenger though with the car I have

I've heard that the Superfast have reduced their fares a bit due to poor demand. I'm told they are now competitive with services from Newcastle and Hull. I can't be sure though since I haven't compared them (i.e. I may be corrected).

I've posted this on ScoobyNet - might be worth keeoping an eye on.

Looking into hotels, I like this one since the facilities are described (on another site) as ...

Secure garage, car-port and lot parking. Rooms en-suite with mini-bar, satellite TV and VCRs. Bar & Restaurant. Camping & BBQ facilities. Balcony views of the track. Workshop equipped with lifting ramp, tools, welding equipment, trailer, etc. Tyres and bike 'service' at weekends. Hire of anything from movies to mountain bikes! Escorted tours of the Ring and local roads. face-icon-small-happy.gif

The big thing for me is to identify the date. We'll have to wait for the official 2003 calendar to be released in the first instance.
