Cret Posted August 7, 2004 Posted August 7, 2004 It had been hesitating under acceleration the last few weeks but has suddenly begun to cut out and the idle to rev up & down quite a bit sometimes just after you pull up at halt signs/lights. Also, my check engine light flashed on for a few seconds yesterday then disappeared again and I don't think has come back on since. This afternoon it cut out several times and started up instantly most times but a couple of times it sounded rough as hell, as if it was only firing on two. When it's been cutting out it's also been emitting the most incredible backfiring, that's had people running for cover! Sounds like a bad day in Basra when it's been going off, with almost machinegun like blasts at times! If anyone can help I'd be grateful as I don't really trust the car at the moment as it nearly cut out whilst I was pulling out of a busy junction earlier! BTW it has an ITG panel filter but it's been in for absolutely ages so I wouldn't have thought that was from having an aftermarket filter really. Any suggestions dudes?
dooahhdoo Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 Jim, First thing I would try is the MAF sensor. Get yourself some carb cleaner, dismantle the maf from the airfeed (do not poke anything inside it as it is just a small thin wire and breaks easily) and give it a REALLY good spray with the cleaner. Go make a cup of tea or visit your favourite porn site on the web, go back and give it another spray and put it back on. Have you done the diagnostics on the ECU to find why the CEL came on? If not try Derek's website here Let us know if it helps m8
Cret Posted August 8, 2004 Author Posted August 8, 2004 I'll give that a whirl as soon as I can get myself a can of carb cleaner. Think DMS sell it so I'll see if I can get some if they're open this avvy..... Cheers dude. Have you had a problem like this before or something?
CustomScoobyIOM Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 Coilpacks could be on their way mate. Also check your sparks, they were the original ones in the engine. Remove your chip as well, try running on standard settings for a while. Found me a Rangie
Cret Posted August 8, 2004 Author Posted August 8, 2004 I'll try swapping the coipacks for the ones of the old motor, and sticking some new plugs in. They need gapping to 0.8mm don't they? Was actually planning on swapping to one of my other chips too before this happened. Good stuff re' the rangie dude. What spec is it?
CustomScoobyIOM Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 Sorry dude meant you found me one yet?!?! Plugs gapped to 0.7mm for the Imprezas dude.... Let me know if you need some spares got loads here for you
Cret Posted August 8, 2004 Author Posted August 8, 2004 Ah, sorry dude. I found out one of my mates is selling his so I asked him, about it but he says he's already got a buyer sorry dude. Can you get goodies like the bosch coil packs & walbro pump, & any idea how much those coil packs are? Never got that pump I paid for on Ebay and neither Ebay nor Paypal would refund me any money either.
CustomScoobyIOM Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 Bugger mate. You want to upgrade to the Phase 1.5 coilpacks etc? Bitch to wire but entirely possible? You need to get yourself over for the weekend mate! Missed out on a Rangie
Cret Posted August 8, 2004 Author Posted August 8, 2004 Be nice to get over for a coupla days but everything is draining me of dollars at the moment (specially with the car now). The bosch ones are Bosch HEC 716 and as far as I know they just go straight on as the majority of all the aussie legacy lads seem to upgrade to them and I've never heard any of them mention anything about rewiring. Am no expert though!
CustomScoobyIOM Posted August 8, 2004 Posted August 8, 2004 Direct bolt on Bosch ones mate? Only heard of the seperate coilpack and then HT leads from the pack to the plugs.... But I will check
Cret Posted August 8, 2004 Author Posted August 8, 2004 Top man. Cheers dude! That should be the right part number though.
CustomScoobyIOM Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 OK mate. Another thought.... Could be your Lambda sensor. Check it is plugged in ok! And if you want a swap I do have a spare one
Cret Posted August 9, 2004 Author Posted August 9, 2004 Ace! Hopefully I'll be able to head down and try a few things tomorrow evening so I'll report back after that!
CustomScoobyIOM Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 Good man! Like I said, if you need bits gimme a shout, or feel free to come over, use all the tools and spare parts (Hands OFF the 2.65!) and get it running sweeeeeeeeeeeet
Cret Posted August 9, 2004 Author Posted August 9, 2004 That'd be ace but I don't think it's likely for a while matey. Don't forget you still have another spare engine over here too!
Cret Posted August 9, 2004 Author Posted August 9, 2004 Don't think there's any huge rush mate. I haven't been complained at yet! You'll have to take your passenger seat out again next time you're over.
CustomScoobyIOM Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 Might try to get it couriered over TBH mate. Need it sooner rather than later Know any good ones?
Cret Posted August 10, 2004 Author Posted August 10, 2004 Dunno really dude as I never get any stuff sent. Have made progress tonight after cleaning MAF. There's a MAF error (number 5) in the ecu but I'm not 100% sure about the diagnostic connectors on mine as I can only find green ones & not black ones anywhere. With the green ones connected you get the error flashing but only when the engine is actually running & NOT when the ignition is just on. Drove home with no cutting out or weird idling at all. It's still hesitating on acceleration but at least I don't have to worry about it conking out all the time now.
CustomScoobyIOM Posted August 10, 2004 Posted August 10, 2004 "Hey everybody im Dr. Nick" "Hey Dr. Nick"
dooahhdoo Posted August 10, 2004 Posted August 10, 2004 wave file clicky as I am in a bit of a silly mood this morning LOL
Cret Posted August 10, 2004 Author Posted August 10, 2004 "Hiya everybody! These drugs will make this operation seem like a beautiful dream!" Dr Nick - can you fix it for my car to no longer hesitate through the rev range when I accelerate at more than pensioner-like rates?
