Recognise This Sti From East Kilbride?

Hi guys,

I've just bought my first Impreza, a 2003 WRX STi. I should be picking it up on Monday or Tuesday, pretty chuffed.

Anyone recognise the car, FJ53 YRX, WRC blue with gold rims? Previous owner was from East Kilbride.

Cheers,

Lenny

Welcome along Lenny, bit of trouble accessing the pics of your car though.

Keeps saying Access denied??

:Scottish-flag:

LOL, the WR Blue with Gold rims doesn't really narrow it down much tbh :P

No, blue and gold not the most unique... ;)

OH MY GOD

Still on the Rapid forum?

Welcome by the way :)

Hi there,

Not really on Rapid forums anymore, although which Rapid forum? The Rapid and my gorgeous Steyr went after my separation/divorce. :(

Weirdly enough my ex wife moaned like f*ck about me getting an Impreza. Funnily enough, my new wife is more than happy I drive what I like. ;) So, hence the new motor. I've still got a BMW 320D Touring for longer runs though, new wife is running that and I traded in her Focus.

So how are you getting on, can't remember your real name, or where you are from, but recognise the user id.

Cheers,

Lenny

Hi and welcome Lenny, I had a nosey at this a while back,i take it the CEL light coming on from start up was still there when you viewed it,guy said it was showing up as a exhaust/co2 sensor issue. I see it was in the garage down the road yesterday so I take it they were sorting a few things out. Oh,and take the bung out the backbox,it's far too quiete!

Just make sure everything is spot on before you drive off as I'm sure a couple of folk on here have had a few 'customer care' issues with them.

Hi Mark,

The light was on when I first saw it, agreed that he would fix whatever was causing it. Got him to do a full mot and repair small hole in drivers seat. All done, the CEL light is now off, but imagine it may come back. I knew about their so called customer care but was happy the car was basically sound. It's going into my mechanic in the next few days for full service and timing belt. Which garage had they put it into? I'm presuming the back box may cause CEL to come on?

I picked it up today, drives well so far. I want a quiter exhaust at idle and on the motorway but good sound when I press the loud pedal. ;-)

Did you like the car apart from CEL light?

Cheers,

Lenny

Yeh mate, looked pretty good,a few wee minor paintwork issues here and there,a wee bit off rust starting to show through at the o/s/f mudflap and a discoloured/blemished area at the l/h/s of the boot, not too bad for the age. I doubt the backbox would through up a CEL mind you,may have had a de-cat down pipe fitted previously. I did notice that the screws and clips were broken of the air intake snorkel,a bit unusual for that to happen so maybe it's been off before if an induction kit of some sort had been fitted before.

They had it in the garage/car sales along the road, The Carr Company I think it's called. If your mates a mechanic then yes,get him to check everything for peace of mind.

Good to hear it drives well ,have fun..........................but...................................get the bung out and let rip, lol!

Cheers Mark,

Yes, will be getting the paintwork sorted properly soon. Also the wheels need a refurb. (is it true it's better not to powder coat STi wheels, too brittle?) They told me the air intake was off to be painted.

I had it at Cooper Brothers in Newmains today for new tyre valves and balance, also alignment. front o's was feathered, front n's was multi plugged and damaged internally after being driven flat. Had two new tyres on the front and balanced up nicely.

Alignment was an issue as the rear equivalent of a track rod end ???? was seized both ends. Need to replace the bush and bolts, will get that done tomorrow when it's having timing belt and service.

You recognise the back box? Is that just a removable baffle? Also Coopers thought it had a sports cat fitted, or does an Sti have that as standard???

Chers,

Lenny

What would need painting at the air intake snorkel? It's black plastic, hmmm! When I pointed it out the guy looked like be didn't have a clue that it was like that!

Yeh,looks like a removable baffle, didnt see any names on the backbox, but it does look like a full system that's been fitted so could have a sports cat,I'm not too clued up on the parts of the standard Sti system, but there is a 2 page thread on here all about it,which might help. As for the wheels, never refurbed a set my self so can't help much on that but I'm sure someone will if you start a "powder coat or paint?" thread, lol!

Sorry, I was thinking of the turbo intercooler air intake. Where is the air intake snorkel, never noticed?

I'll get a good pic of exhaust.

It's now in my trusted garage for it's full service, timing belt etc. etc. :)

The car is mid way through it's full service and timing belt change. Weirdly, it had a small oil leak from, wait for it, the oil filter. It looks like the filter has corroded at the end which worries me that it hasn't had an oil change for a long time. Groan.... The oil seemed ok, weird one... Or are Subara oil filters prone to this? Never seen this before.

Also, looks like it's been de-catted, so once all the servicing has been done I reckon I'll have it remapped just to make sure all ok...

Are engine covers from the underside missing?

Don't think so, I'm not doing the work, my garage (independent) are doing work. Although to be honest not sure where covers should be underneath.

Normally there is a full engine cover and partial gearbox one - if the engine one is missing then the oil filter is exposed to our rather poor weather - if the paint was damaged at fitting, one winter and parked outside will easily see it rust through.

Aha,someone on who knows what their talking about! Baz will keep you right,I was just winging it with the last few posts! I was starting to sweat a bit in case you asked any technical questions !!

Anyway, thats the car had it's full service. All fluids and filters changed, engine, gearbox and diffs. Timing belt replaced and adjuster, all brakes stripped, 4 wheel alignment done. Tracker fitted and everything all checked. Clean bill of health from my mechanic.

I'm up in Orkney for the weekend, part work part pleasure. Mmmm... you think I took my diesel Beemer which makes more sense? Nah, decided to give the Scooby a decent run. Well, it was amazing, standard 70mph run up the A9 etc. with the odd blast past trucks. I just love this car, superb. The roads from Inverness up to the ferry by John O'Groats were superb as usual, but even better in the Scooby.

Fuel economy has been much better than I thought, I've not been driving like my hair is on fire but occasional bouts of dropping the boot mixed in with off boost sensible. Also with 3 adults, a dog and a boot full of filming gear, got 30.2mpg
