thebigfelly Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 (edited) should be gettin a back box in the next couple of days , and wonderin how easy they are to fit , tools needed and all that , or a cheap garage that would fit in edinburgh? Edited March 6, 2011 by thebigfelly
neill54 Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Back box should only take 1/2 an hour max depends on the old bolts but easily a diy job!! Neil
Alastair Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Easy fit just 2 bolts to undo, an release from the hangers. Take about 30mins....
scooby222 Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 even i can manage it as long as you can get under the car and the new backbox is still a bolt fitting as opposed to slip joints. my old mongoose system sounded great but because it was a slip joint system you had to change the whole exhaust come mot time, no just slipping in a cat
lewisscoob Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Piece of cake: Chock wheels Jack up car Undo old bolts and discard if not reusable Remove backbox from hangers (3 usually) this'll be easier if you spray a little lube into the rubber hangers on the exhaust side. If they come off with the box just refit them to original locations. Cleanup centre section flange face with a wire brush. Hang up new back box on hangers. Insert a new gasket and fire a bolt through new box flange, gasket and centre section flange to hold it at one end. Insert other bolt and tighten them both up evenly (don't go too tight on one before starting the other)
lewisscoob Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Oh and if you hadn't figured it out: Lower the car to the ground. Remove wheel chocks. Fire her up and bask in the glory and achievement of your efforts!

scooby222 Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 ooo i sense a mini meet at someones house with a garage coming on lol - id be happy to help but afraid my gaffes a good 40 minutes away
lewisscoob Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I certainly am easily bribed with tea and beer but like Dave I live miiiiiiles from you. There must be someone local to do it? Even go to a small garage with the bits and give a mechanic a back hander?
kewe Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 There's plenty kwik-fits and budget tyres etc, think they usually will do it for £20-£30 so might try some at the weekend.
thebigfelly Posted March 5, 2011 Author Posted March 5, 2011 (edited) its the ninja 2 back box, should be picking it up this evening, and im off all day sunday and monday , so will give it a go tomorow or mon , weather depending , will also see if i can get a before and after vid or pic or something, wish me luck tho, the only other tinkering ive done on motors is fitting an inducion kit to a corsa, and doing the squeeky seat belt fix on the scoob , would using the original gasket be ok rather than buying a new one . or is that just crazy talk Edited March 5, 2011 by thebigfelly
Alastair Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 A new gasket is always best, but if the old one comes off in one piece you could reuse with some silicone exaust sealer and it should be fine....
lewisscoob Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 As Alistair says, if it comes off in one and is in reasonable condition then it should be fine but for all the cost of a new gasket, I would just get a new one.
tomwrx08 Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 u can pick the new gasket up at the motor factors for a few quid, think the bolts are either 14 or 17 mm

Mines is a Prodrive so should be straight forward for these guys I would have thought.
Vir Cotto Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Get new bolts and gasket from your local Subaru dealer, some new exhaust hangers from Halfords, be prepared to cut off the old bolts(angle grinder works well), and have a ground sheet available. Easy DIY job if you don't mind getting down and dirty.

Even at £20 or £30 fitted must be worth saving the hassle?

Easy DIY job if you don't mind getting down and dirty. dont mind getting down and dirty at all, would love to learn how to do more of my own work on cars than pay a garage to do it, like fitting exhaust/back box , doing the breaks , changing filters , only thing ive realy done is put an induction kit on my old corsa and dare i say it fit some blue neons in the engine bay and inside the footwells (i was 20 at the time ) as for an angle grinder dont have one of them, just have the basic stuff, hammers, screw driver sets , spanners, dont have garage with tools id love to fill it with
thebigfelly Posted March 6, 2011 Author Posted March 6, 2011 the back box in question , picked up last night from stu, (sleiper) badbaz might recognise it
kewe Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Mines fitted today for £20 What a difference over the standard twin pipe, really does burble nice now and I'm sure it feels like it's picking up better low down
badbaz Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Yeah, looks familiar Paul! Have the welds held out? The original way the supports were welded was a bit cack! I really liked that pipe, looks great and sounds brilliant too! Get a deresonated centre section if you can too
