How Much Power Can You Run On A Standard Uk Turbo Block?

Recommended Posts

Seeing as i no longer have the spec c and took a p/x on it with a uk turbo. Just wondering what sort of power you can run these at on the standard internals without a big bang?? :driving:

The car already has andy forrest stage 1 remap with a simtek ecu and launch control and running approx 280bhp. Exedy clutch with wrx/sti gearbox and diff.

Got the modding bug again so plan is to up the power B)

Obviously i will not be going mad with the power on standard internals, just wondering what power is safe (350bhp ish???)

Cheers Joe

From what i can remember 350 is about the reccomended limit on the rods. I have however read an article where a uk turbo was running

430ish with standard internals

Cheers! I thought i had heard 350 from somewhere, just so i know what turbo to go for. Thinking td05/16g and keep it at a sensible 330ish for a while until the forging begins. B) Then the fun will start!! :driving:

After years of modding & many £000,00s spent I still maintain my T registered 98 turbo is the fastest scooby I have ever driven, bought from Fraser Anderson new & unmodified the handling & performance were awesome for a standard car.

JcScoob on here didn't do too badly on a standard uk block and internals. His car must have been at least 400 hp.

Better idea would be to pick what power you want and spec thar car to it rather than try and push you luck as far as you can.

True, and it ran like that for years without ever letting go. AFAIK

Bottom line is it's the luck of the draw, some will do it others won't.

:driving: it varies from engine to engine and depends on what kind of life its had (whether well serviced/looked after etc....) an engine which has had a hard life may not take much extra power before it self destructs B)

The engine has been very well maintained with full service history and extra services inbetween. Probably looking to go about 330bhp (ish) so would only need 550cc injectors and a TD05/16g and a map tweak from andy to get it there.

Car has at present, simtek ecu with twin maps, antilag and launch control, full decat afterburner exhaust system with stainless headers and matched up pipe, K&N panel filter (resinator removed), walbro fuel pump, NGK PFR7B plugs, as engine mods.

Not sure if i will need to uprate the intercooler too before the next map??

Got a prodrive 3 port boost solenoid to fit prior to mapping to stabilise the boost.

So shopping list is 440/550cc injectors and a new turbo so far. Any other ideas?

Ciaranrb5 how much you looking for, for the VF23? And what sort of condition is it in? And most importantly will it fit directly onto a 1998 uk turbo (as i know this model varied slightly)

Cheers Joe

Was working spot on when the car was on the road no damage to anything and no play in bearings. It will fit straight onto a 98 uk no probs. By the sounds of it you could just fit a turbo and fuel pump and get the mapped tweeked for 330bhp

He'll need injectors, the MY97/98 UK Turbos came with 380cc injectors as standard. I would also definitely upgrade the intercooler Joe, minimum an STi V5/6/P1 item but more likely an STi 7/8/9 TMIC which are proven to far more than your current power goal. The standard one on there will start to struggle to keep ACTs in order once you wind the boost up on a bigger turbo and I wouldn't bother going FMIC at the moment, thats something to consider once you forge the engine and go for higher power later on.

To keep things on topic, I'm making 338/322 on my UK Turbo and it seems more than happy to deal with that... and has been for about 7-8k miles since its had the upgrades done.

Cheers,

Grant

Cheers Grant,

What turbo are you running? Thats the sort of power im looking for at the moment until i can afford a forged build. Might have got my hands on a V8 intercooler with undertray. Can get a set of 440cc injectors off a mate but thinking 550cc's is the way to go.

Plus just sussed how to change maps on the simtek, had to change maps today to 95ron map as i run out of Vpower. Not so much fun on low boost

Personally, I'd rather go for the 550cc and over-do the spec slightly rather than running the 440cc that bit closer to their safe operating limit... but thats a personal thing, also, depending how much further you go power-wise you could retain the 550cc where you would almost certainly need to upgrade from the 440cc in the future.

I'm running a VF34 on my car Joe, it spools pretty quickly and is always on the money when making progress... I seriously rate my car the way it is and I am really wary of upping the power too much more because it could potentially spoil what a great back road car it is.

Haha, yea I think the 95RON map could feel a wee bit flat after rolling around on the high boost map!!

IMO on a classic the best, most balanced bang per buck would be 350bhp and if possible around the 350Ib ft mark.

Going for more involves time, money, frustration!

It's always nice and feel good factor to have more but for me on a classic I'd stick to 350 with decent handling/ braking mods.

Thats the plan alan, brakes are already done so some whiteline goodies will be next on the cards once the power is sorted.

Hey stranger.

How's the tan coming on?

Hi Colin, how's it goin' fella?

Yeah, not bad, bit cold for us this time of year (17 deg, lol and yes it feels like a Scottish winter) but summers' just round the corner, so won't be long before we hit the bushfire season and 40's again !! lol

I couldn't take that sort of heat, especially now the car no longer has air con

So is that you out there for good then?

Sorry to take the thread off topic btw.

No probs! lol! Always good to get a bit of banter from folk you aint seen in ages!!

Thanks Joe.

At 35-40+ degrees you need aircon for sure. At that temp you keep windows firmly shut, cause as soon as you open the windows, the car heats up! No cool breeze coming in when you're driving along! so even without aircon, it'd still be cooler than it would otherwise be.

Well we're two year down the line in Oz and still learning an awful lot. I've got concerns of schooling for Lisa, but only time will tell what we do in the future, it's too early to say for definite at the moment.

Other things about here? I hate the cost of scoobies, so i haven't bought one, i love the price of petrol, i hate the cost of electricity, i love the dry and warmer weather, i hate mobile phone plans and network coverage, i love the lack of racism, i hate the shorter days compared to Scotland, i love getting up in the morning, cooking breakfast on the barbie while looking down the gully and seeing listening to nature like parrots, parakeets etc, i hate the cost of housing, i love the cheap markets, the beaches are incerdible as are the sunsets, so yeah.., hmm.., can't say it's for good yet, but it's been an experience i don't regret!
