Cadet Karting

I've two sons who are 10 and 8. I'd like to give them a try at proper Cadet Karting, preferably at Larkhall. Is there anyone on here who's kid does it or knows someone who does? Need a quick try out before any commitment could be made. Will pay obviously.

My two girls are also wanting to try Karting, but maybe not a cadet series. Does anyone know the age restrictions for junior karts? Mine are aged 7 and 9 just now.

I'm sure it'll still be Cadets Phil, Rotax Max would be a bit mental for beginners! Will need to look into it further.

Just had a look at the ScotKart and Xtreme Karting websites. Both places do junior cadets from 8-10yrs. Minimum height restrictions of 4' 3" - which rules out my youngest (very lightweight and has no fear).

Xtreme - £50 for three 1.5hr (One a month) sessions to qualify for being allowed to attend practice session with the older 10-15yr kids.

ScotKart - £20 per 1.5hr session held every weekend morning 09:30-11:00. Also gets a cadet qualification.

I'm going to look into it a little bit more, but looks like my oldest might be getting a bunch of lessons as part of her Birthday present in August.

Need to check out the rules for West of Scotland Kart club. Bit different going to indoor track as opposed to proper race kart at Larkhall.

If you could report back your findings Phil.

Ripped from the WSKC site ;)

KART CLASSES

WSKC - WHERE CHAMPIONS ARE BORN

Although we allow most types of kart to practice at WSKC, not every Cadet, Junior and Senior class races here. The classes are listed in order of popularity as follows:

Cadets - from 8 to 13 years old

Comer Cadet

Uses a 60cc sealed 2-stroke Comer engine so engine rebuilds have to be carried out by an approved service agent. This is the class used for the premier championships and is run by most clubs. The engine and carburettor adjustments need to be quite precise so having a competent parent/mechanic is a distinct advantage!

Honda Cadet

Uses a 4 stroke, GX160 engine which is ideal for beginners. The long life engines are very low-cost, do not have to be sealed, but have to conform to a technical specification. Honda Cadet has a national ABkC championship.

WTP Cadet

Is a different model of 60cc 2-stroke with the latest B5 engine having an electric push-button start. This is commonly known as TAG - for Touch-and-Go. Like Comers the engines are sealed and have a log-book.

My 2 would like to as well but only 7 & 5. Checked with KH when we were at the Scottish Motorshow and they said minimum age was 8.

Sorry to sound like a blowhard boys, but please feel free to PM or call me on this one. I've been heavily involved in karting for around 12 years now, and was even the chairman of the WSKC for a short while. I've drawn away from the scene a little now, but still help with my 20 year old nephew who is currently 2nd in the MSA Super 1 championship in the KF2 series. Also his 8 year old little brother has just started racing in the Honda Cadet class. I raced TKM's myself for a few years(seriously slippy in the wet).

The only kids mentioned here that are ineligible, is the 5 year old. Kids from 6 upwards are allowed to practice, they can get 50cc Bambino karts if they are very small, but would be best suited to getting the Honda engined karts for simplicity to drive due to the low down torque of the engines. The Comers are ultimately faster in the right hands, but a good deal of practice is required to get that point.

Baz, going to the meeeting is a great thing, but remember people will quite possibly vear you in a wrong direction if they think it may help line their pockets.

Kev, in Scotland, Rotax classes are dying away, with the most popular being Formula Blue in the teenager and adult classes, with some juniors still leaning to the very affordable TKM class, which is where a lot of the recent top motor racing drivers learned there trade.

It is a sport that can still be done on a reasonable budget at club level, but you don't want to know the costs when you get to British Chamionship competition (Cadet engines swapping hands for 10K!!!)
