Neofox Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Well finally I'm finding the time to crack on with getting my Scooby tidied up and back on the road and I was hoping someone could help with suggestions about Gearbox's! My current gearbox is a pain to get in 1st and 2nd and I was finding I had to slowly slot it into gear allowing the synchros a few seconds to grip or I would hear it grinding in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Car is a MY98 Type-R gearbox code TY752VB5CA with about 60'000 miles on it. My current setup is 350/400 but was looking at posssibly pushing that to 400/400 or thereabouts. I dont plan on launching it day in day out on a drag strip its mainly B road blasts and possibly the odd track day. Realistically I dont want to spend £2k+ on changing over to 6 speed. What would the suggestions / recommendations be on what to do? Cheers!
colin_ross Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 ^^^ Yup, one of those. Either that or a 6 speed at 5 times the cost. I ran my sti 5 box (exact same) at 412/400 for a couple of season including crail and knockhill and it held together just fine. I've heard that the 754 sti boxes have fewer, but fatter teeth and stand the abuse much better but having never opened it cannot vouch for this. I have one sitting in my garage if you're interested.
RA Dunk Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Taken from Andys site "Note The V 5/6 STI/P1 Gearbox is stronger than the UK or previous versions however Level 4 + Power may shorten the life of the transmission this will depend on type of use and driving style." Level 4 is 400 to 420 BHP As your not planning on ragging the car to within an ince of its life you should be ok with the STi 6 box, but then again it depends on the box's previous use
Neofox Posted April 27, 2010 Author Posted April 27, 2010 Yeh I had read that the TY54 boxes are supposidly a bit stronger than the TY52 but have seen people running decent numbers through the TY52 aslong as you respect it. Playsatan what mileage/condition is the box you have in? Fancy PM'ing me a price and gearbox code if you get a second Who is recommended to give gearbox's the once over?

My TY752 happily ran 400 including trackdays for over a year, infact the block let go before the box! Who is recommended to give gearbox's the once over? arch Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 (edited) A TY754VN4AA from a UK blobeye would be a good choice ran one for two seasons at 330 ish and 400 ish and was constantly launched and not treated with any sympathy at all, and was still perfect when removed. If you have a Typre R and R180 rear diff then you will have to pick up an R180 3.54 rear diff as well to match the UK blobeye WRX rear diff ratio as your shafts and hubs will not fit with the R160 diff fitted to the blobeye WRX. Fancy PM'ing me a price and gearbox code if you get a second Who is recommended to give gearbox's the once over? The box is at home but can pull off the code when I get home tonight. The 754 is the casing and yes it is stronger than the earlier 752. The box I have also has the version 5 type r gear set in it which has the stronger/shorter gearing but no shorter to what you're already used to. I bought the box for spares but have only robbed diff parts so far so is still complete. I was told it had 50k on it and was running good but would be happy to allow a teardown/inspection before money changed hands. SW is who I was going to suggest also.
Neofox Posted April 27, 2010 Author Posted April 27, 2010 how is my old girl doing duncan? i see your giving her the life she was designed for!! cheers for the input i think a phonecall to SW is on the cards. Playsatan i'm still interested in the gearbox and if it would be possible for someone like sw to give it a clean bill of health it sounds like a good plan! if you could give me a rough idea of price as i'm gonna need to cost the different plans of action.
RA Dunk Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 (edited) how is my old girl doing duncan? i see your giving her the life she was designed for!! She's in bits , soon to be better than ever though with a fully forged stroker kit fitted, been off the road for 15-16 months now so going to need a bit of fair bit of TLC with a wire brush and a dremmel Edited April 27, 2010 by RA Dunk
Neofox Posted April 27, 2010 Author Posted April 27, 2010 Ah poor thing! I still remember the day letting her go. Glad to hear things are coming together, I'm almost as bad as you, bought this Type-R about 10 months ago then SORN'd it after 250 miles with plans on having it finished by now, gotta love our economy! Never mind fingers crossed i'll actually get something done this summer.
