Suspension Woes

Could anyone recommend a decent and not too expensive alternative to the standard Subaru struts? The current rear set have only been on the car for less than 14k miles and 18 months and are banging like mad again. The car's out of warranty now and there is no way I'm putting the standard Subaru struts on if I'm paying for it. Car is an 04 bugeye type UK Sti, sits on Prodrive springs if that makes any difference. No need for anthing to stiff, car is never on a track and it's everyday use type stuff I'm after, not shake your fillings loose material!

Many thanks!

A lot of members are going for BC coilovers good price (group buys on Scoobynet) will make the car quite a bit lower than standard. About £490 (Apex) + fitting

You can get Tein Superstreet that are adjustable but can run the same high as the prodrive springs. There has been a thread on leaking from these and turnaround for repair is 6-7weeks. About £920 (Ebay) + fitting

Eibach or KW variant 1 more expensive. Eibach have 2 year warranty both adjustable but can run the same high as the prodrive springs. Both about £1050-1100 (MSW or Ebay)+ fitting, reuse of top mounts or £300 for adjustable camber plates (Ebay).

Might sound expensive but Subaru wanted £800 for the front 2 shocks last time I checked, so your looking at £1600 for a full set that could go anytime and you only get a years warranty.

Hope this helps

Phone Euro Car Parts on 0141 331 0332, and see how much they quote you for 2 OE fitment Kayaba's - should be around £100 each. Get them fitted by an independant fitter (cough, cough) and you are sorted.

The problem with the BC units now is the dealer network has kicked in and the prices have now increased significantly to a level where they are no longer cheap. I am in the same scenario and need some new shocks or coilovers as my KYB Ulltras have started knocking and althouh KYB are a Uk company they will not refurb them so be warned avoid KYB like the plague as they are as bad if not worse than oem units. My KYB units have less than 15k on them and they are knackered.

You could also strip them down and put new grease in your current ones. Not all subaru struts can be serviced so you'd have to check if yours can. If you do the job yourself your costs would be minimal as the grease isn't expensive.

Done that and it lasted a week before they started knocking again. The knocking is wear in the struts so greasing will only stop it temporarily.

I thought my struts were banging so managed to source a secondhand (35k miles) set of struts for my bugeye wrx. However, when I had the car into hypertech yesterday to get them changed Duncan found it was my droplinks and my current struts are fine.

So, I've got a set of secondhand struts (4) if you're interested in them for £150 (what I paid for them). Not sure if they fit on an STI. PM if you're interested.

Cheers

Richard.

Cheers for the advice guys. I actually lucked out this time as Nobles are going to replace the knackered shocks under Subaru parts warranty as they were only changed in August 08 and have done under 13k miles on them. Apparently it's different shocks that Subaru are supplying now, here's hoping they last longer than the last set!
