sinny Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 bear with me with this guys i will explain as best i can as to whats happening, the car is a 55plate hawkeye sti type uk, whats happening is its like there a bit of a cough when boosting now and again then its like the power just hits, its not like this all the time, other problem i have is say on motorway at 70 and accelerate in 6th the boost comes up to about 17psi on some cases with foot planted 19psi but nothing happens, it does accelerate but like its not using teh turbo, try it 15 mins down the road boost comes up and away we go no probs. Maybe just a coincidence but i started having these probs after it failed an mot on emissions and got subaru to change the lambda sensor and it passed no probs. Only mods I have is foam air filter, 2nd decat, straight through centre section and a prodrive back box, hoping these symptoms will ring any bells with you guys Stevie
Smiler AS Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Does it feel a bit jumpy/ stuttery when coming on boost 2-2.5k revs? Kinda hesitates a little then boost comes on when you pull above 2.5k revs?
sinny Posted April 15, 2010 Author Posted April 15, 2010 I have to say only really noticed it when hot as i am very gentle with it until it is hot, Does it feel a bit jumpy/ stuttery when coming on boost 2-2.5k revs? Kinda hesitates a little then boost comes on when you pull above 2.5k revs? Yes that sounds almost identical to whats happening, a wee bit of cough/splutter then it clears and its ok, kinda hoping you are going to pinpoint the problem now
Spaceman Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 how long you had the car? is that it in the pic? looks like Col`s old one he just traded in.
sinny Posted April 15, 2010 Author Posted April 15, 2010 (edited) Had the car just over a year now, and yeah thast it in the pic, It was a subaru uk owned car when new Edited April 15, 2010 by sinny
Smiler AS Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 (edited) Yep, had exactly the same problem last weekend on my hawkeye. The 2.5's are greedy on the oil or more so on breathing oil vapour, what I have just learned from others is not to fill the oil up to full / max level on the dipstick, keep it between half and 2/3 on the dipstick level. This allows the breather pipes to work away without getting too clogged. I had my oil filled up to max and was causing a bit of havic including the boost solenoid. So take a little oil out (ive got a suction pump with long thin tube I can fit down the oil dipstick tube - allows me ti finely adjust oil level) and give the boost solenoid a good clean with electrical cleaner, few quid for halfords, also sprayed some brake cleaner down the two pipes that connect to the solenoid - you will be shocked how much dirt/ grim/gunk will come out the solenoid when you give it a shake after soaking it with the cleaner. Felt 100 times smoother as soon as i went out. Good luck. Edited April 16, 2010 by Smiler AS

Ahh now reading that I also did an oil change just before the problems and it was filled to just below max, will get onto that tommorrow cheers
Smiler AS Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 (edited) No problem, remember to give the solenoid and pipes and clean / soaking too. Dont worry about being shy with the cleaner, I did it twice, think I didnt put enough in 1st time, it just evaporates anyway. Think the long term solution is to get breather pipe / oil catch cans, Im quite impressed with the Hyperflow ones. Edited April 16, 2010 by Smiler AS
sinny Posted April 18, 2010 Author Posted April 18, 2010 Sorted, tnx a lot smiler, found oil in the pipes and into solenoid, gave it a good cleaning out and so far its like a diff car, smooth power all the way up
Scottynic Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 Guys I have this problem too but unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about Subaru engines. I had this problem a wee while ago also but it went away funnily after I changed my battery obviously just a coincedence? I checked my oil tonight and it's actually a bit on the low side. Any advice to help me on my way will be greatly appreciated. Cheers
StewartyBoy Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 Do the same as the lads have specified above. Clearly good advice, as it proves to have worked. If you dont know where the pipes are and how to clean them let us know and we'll point you in the right direction.

I am mechanically minded but a scoob is a bit like spagetti on a plate to me LOL
sinny Posted May 7, 2010 Author Posted May 7, 2010 Its easier than you think m8 and it makes a huge difference, remove the solenoid from the bracket, then what i did was connect the 2 green plugs under dash and sprayed the electrical cleaner in one of the ports, as it clicks u get the cleaner coming out other side, clean the pipes if they look bad as well, put it all back together and go drive it and feel the difference. There are a good few write ups about it, again if you are still struggling just ask
