Vimmy Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Howdy chaps, I don't know what the brightness of the sidelights of your cars is like, but on mine they were dire and have gone through many 'bright' ones to find out they're all pretty pants and no different to stock. After a bit of surfing the forums I came across these LED lights from Autobulbsdirect that other folks have used and I can see why now. They have the same W5W fitment (not sure of other scoob models other than the classic) and have to be fitted the right way round or they don't work as i found out after refitting the light to the car . I have a photo showing the existing light and the new one opposite sides of the car, but cant find my ifone lead to upload it, but the light is far far brighter and almost head light level brightness with a crisp light bluey whiteness to it. I bought onlien sunday night around 1030pmn and was on my door on wednesday morning, bargain. At 15 quid shipped it was a little bit pricey but for what you get and the reliability you get compared to a filament bulb that can shatter if dropped I'd say its well worth the money. Cheers, Col

Cheers, Col I just replaced my mains with extra bright lights and the sad looking corners really did look bad, dunno why it is on Subarus but they really are dim. I have ordered a set of these now so hopefully will improve alot Cheers Col Andy

Been working up the bottle to do it for ages now! Hairdryer is plenty warm Stu. No need for the oven mate. Haven't forgotten the pics for you either, just not had broadband at that PC for a wee while.
andyjudge Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Mmm must change mine, they look pants compared to the headlights. Although the headlights are pants compared to HID's Andy
Vimmy Posted February 19, 2010 Author Posted February 19, 2010 Like this? Exactly that Baz, although my original light was not as bright as your pic shows, the new light is just the same, nice crisp white with a dash of blue, very Dulux

Vimmy Posted February 19, 2010 Author Posted February 19, 2010 Ah you guys with 'improper' Scoobs, the proper ones have side lights that just pop out in your hand however its a bugger when they fall out when your driving along the road, kind of sidelight roulette
Vimmy Posted February 19, 2010 Author Posted February 19, 2010 (edited) Ok no laughing at my camera skillz, this is a rather blurry night time pic done on the Iphone, which doesn't appear to like taking shots at night.. The right side is the stock lighting, the left is the new one, its best looked at with squinted eyes Edited February 19, 2010 by Vimmy

Vimmy Posted February 19, 2010 Author Posted February 19, 2010 This daytime shot show the comparative brightness between the sides and the main lamps, which I think look ok, I found the original box that the main bulbs came in, apparently they were Halfrauds #472UB which according to description says 12v 100/80W Ultra Blue and some blurb about off road use or something.... Well now that I have tried them off main road I'll guess the 60W bulbs will be going back in...
Vimmy Posted February 19, 2010 Author Posted February 19, 2010 Good work! Pics!I changed my side lights on the bug - had to take most of the front end off lol!!!!!!! Yikes, the whole front off just to get to the side lights

Vimmy Posted February 19, 2010 Author Posted February 19, 2010 No worries, what did you go for in the end??
leitchy Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 No worries, what did you go for in the end?? think i will try the extreme whit to match the night breaker bulbs i have on main beam
andyjudge Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Just a word of warning peep's Be careful putting higher wattage bulbs in as they can cause issue with melting the wiring or as In my case melted the connector
Vimmy Posted February 21, 2010 Author Posted February 21, 2010 Yeah that had crossed my mind, the extra current drawn by the higher bulbs are an issue and even more so when running high beams at night too. Hopefully the fuses for the headlights would kick in, fingers crossed. I'd like to think Subaru designed their looms with a bit of extra capacity. I'll run on full lights tomorrow and check the loom for any excessive heating
andyjudge Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 Just replaced 1 of my main lights as it blew at the weekend, Now running Halfords Extreme bulbs (Xenon's with 90% more output) they're running a buy 1 get 1 free offer at the moment. sidelights now look very very dim so must order replacements now. Yep melted the plugs on my old Astra when running 120W blubs, mind you I was also running quad 150W Spots/driving lamps in a pod as well, Jeez it was bright when all on.
Vimmy Posted February 23, 2010 Author Posted February 23, 2010 Is that what you could call 'daylight' bulbs I checked the cables this morning, seemed ok, but that was after a blast down the motorway with the car being cooled by the freezing temps.
Vimmy Posted February 23, 2010 Author Posted February 23, 2010 I tell you what did fail today, was the lights kind of. I hit a pheasant at 50 mph this morning going into Lechlade, man them birds can fly fast Bloody thing cracked the left indicator cover, just waiting now for the rain to fill it up and put some fish in there It also knocked the bulb so that it lost contact, so every time I indicated left the left hand side indicators were on steroids. I'll check the block tomorrow, they have a rubber cover on them which I guess will heat up, stink a lot and then melt everywhere. I popped into halfrauds today to check the bulbs, they dont seem to these halogen ultra blue bulbs anymore, I saw the Xenon ones at 90% extra light but i wonder what the light difference will be going to a paltry 60W bulb, at £25 a go its an expensive experiment
