Looking For Help Rebuilding 1994 2.0t Wrx Engine

I have been building a custom 1966 camper for the last year; I have fitted it with custom brakes, steering, suspension, gearbox, cage and electrics many parts are one offs. Now comes the engine, I got a great deal on a 1994 2.0t WRX jap import engine which I am in the middle of sourcing parts for and cleaning. I don't plan on splitting the block as all signs point to it being ok so it is strip down that far. What I'm looking for is help changing the timing belt and putting her back together. I'm quite handy but have only ever played with classic engines in the past including mini and German air-cooled ones and would really appreciate someone to look over my shoulder and help out while I work on the rebuild and I am prepared to pay someone for their time. Please don't send me links to build shops as I want to do it in my garage in Granton and learn as we go.

Check some pics and facts on my webpage

Hello and welcome , it was me that pointed you over to here from Scoobynet ( g7prs over there ).

Hopefully somebody around the Edinburgh area will give you a hand. I dont have the technical knowledge or i would have offered a hand :(

A couple of questions about your build, where are you planning on mounting the intercooler and what ecu are you using ( is it the one that goes with the donor engine ? ).

Welcome to the site.

Could you be more specific regarding what you would like to know? When you say you're not splitting the block do you mean splitting the block in half or simply taking the heads off?

The timing belt is straight forward enough in the car and if you have it on the bench even easier. Use quality parts, most people change the tensioner and idlers at the same time as they have been known to fail. They are pricy though but cheaper than a new motor. There are timing marks on all the pulleys, line them up and pull the pin on the tensioner and tighten the idler down. I'd recommend hand cranking the motor until the marks come back into line to make sure all is well. I can give you a diagram with the marks if that helps.

The torque settings for the bolts can be found online but the one to watch out for is the one on the crank pulley. Jam the flywheel with a bar and get that bolt to 95 ft/lbs. They have been know to slacken after a belt change so double check it and after the engine has ran go back and check it again.

What else are you planning on doing?

Not using an intercooler I'm going for a charge cooler and I will be mod'in the ecu from the donor car...

By splitting the block I mean I have stripped everything off the block but am leaving the block itself alone ofther than a clean and a few new small replacments.

Thanks for your advice on the timing belt, not sure if anyone could be detailed enough to stop me fearing doing this though much rather have some help. So far I have had one interested party so maybe thanks to this site I may not have to go it alone.

I made a flywheel jam tool for getting the bolts off the flywheel in the first place so I should be ok with that for torque when it comes to putting it back on.

As for other plans as far as the engine goes, fit a charge cooler and twin fan radiator and have a custom mount bar made thats about it as far as I can think right now.

Want to know anything just ask...
