smiley kylie Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 West Berkshire District Council have announced that due to dwindling reserves of rock salt they will be conserving what they have and will only be treating the Motorway and major A roads this week - Heavy snow forcast for tonight/tomorrow ... Happy new year
scoob fae ork Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 Orkney Islands council ran out of rock salt about 2 weeks ago and since then they have been spreading tonnes of super sharp gravel which has now left a thick layer on the roads now and is super slippy to the point cars are skidding on the gravel and that's before i even go on about the damage it does to the paint work . What the frick is wrong with sand ???
stum450n Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 West Berkshire District Council have announced that due to dwindling reserves of rock salt they will be conserving what they have and will only be treating the Motorway and major A roads this week - Heavy snow forcast for tonight/tomorrow ... Happy new year I think Oxon council must've pinched it! The roads are thick with the stuff - to the point that the water dripping off my car from the melted ice is so black and dirty it looks more like oil that water! Hate to think what it's doing to the underside of my poor car!
smiley kylie Posted January 5, 2010 Author Posted January 5, 2010 It just does my head in - we had exactly the same situation back last January and February in Berkshire/Oxon areas, and i can remember the dribblers from county hall and the highways dept saying how they would ensure this did not happen again My usually calm and placid demeanour has apparently legged it I am going to take a few deep breaths and make some Camomile tea now
StrikE Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 We have a vast amount of grit on reserve according to our beloved SNP minister Mr Alex Salmond, i can smell........ pooh
andyjudge Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 No West Berks have been saved with a loan of grit from Hampshire - wait for it - Its enough for 2 runs Don't panic though the website quoted that a big delivery was due today, Am I the only one who see's the main sticking point being that the Mine is Up North & they're already snowbound. Useless bunch, Am looking at winter tyres now, Am thinking that Studded may be an option as the council can't complain about them wrecking the roads, they haven't repaired them for years Rant Over Oh & the Chav's in the road opposite me a still driving like nutters
james04 Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 (edited) i read some were that they were putting add blue on the roads. Edited January 5, 2010 by james04
stum450n Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 i read some were that they were putting add blue on the roads. Isn't that the stuff they add to commercial diesel engines that's made from piss????
james04 Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 (edited) it gos into a tank next to the diesel tank it helps with the exhaust emissons ozone friendly, now if i could fine out if its any good as a deiced im laughing we stock it at work for the lorrys in 45 gallon drums. im not sure if its made from piss? but i know they take it as cost loads. smiley kylie Posted January 7, 2010 Author Posted January 7, 2010 Well, ive just driven 20 miles from Reading to Oxon to work and it was a bit scary in places but the Oxon roads are definitely in a better condition. Billy put his car into a tree because of the ice - but im pleased to say he is alright, and car damage is not structural, just cosmetic. Be careful out there everyone. K
Terry Butcher Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 Well quite frankly if the police advise not to travel then I do not. We are not at war and my life is worth more than some manager ranting and raving that some folks made it in. Plenty to do around the house - now where did I put the pinny with the tinny in the pocket? mmm
smiley kylie Posted January 8, 2010 Author Posted January 8, 2010 Unfortunately Terry not all of us have the option - those of us who are self employed with jobs that necessitate being out on the road or for example in the care sector have to just get on with it whatever the weather Given the choice i would be at home though
stevie e Posted January 8, 2010 Posted January 8, 2010 Looking at the way things are run in this country it is not a suprise that we lost our empire!! There is over 2 million people unemployed at the moment. Give them a shovel and get them clearing the roads and footpaths and earn their free cash that most workers are paying for from their tax's. I know that some people are genuinley sick and that there are not a lot of jobs available, but self help goes a long way. Rant over. I had to drive from Burghfield Common to Farnborough this morning, what a nightmare I don't think there has been a gritter in the area since the end of ww2. I had to drive 4 miles + before I got onto a treated road. Got to say though felt nice and steady in my scooby though. Changing the subject a bit I hope to get to the next meet up. I have been reading the posts, it seems you have a good crowd gathering, if you don't mind I will come along next time. Take care out there.
andyjudge Posted January 8, 2010 Posted January 8, 2010 You'll be more than welcome mate. Have only seen 1 gritter in West Berks since the snow began, strange though I saw 2 in Harringay this morning within 5 minutes of leaving the tube on the way to work, & there were even council workers clearing the pavements.
smiley kylie Posted January 19, 2010 Author Posted January 19, 2010 More snow tonight/tomorrow according to BBC
