scoobzie Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 when do you say right enough is enough what would your ideal scooby have power wise for the road were would you say a nice balance of power can be found 350/350 or more
colin_ross Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 What a great question. In a classic I reckon 350 - 400 is more than enough. Any less could leave you wanting on the straights, any more can make it a right handfull in the tighter stuff. The best fun I had was with my 208 hp uk classic. I could rag it anywhere in total confidence which made it match for much quicker cars until I came onto a straight. No idea what a newage or hatch would need.
RS Grant Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 My Hawkeye STi was brilliant with 350/390... The extra torque of the 2.5 can really punt you out the other side of the corner. I think the absolute most I'd have wanted in my Newage Impreza would be 400/450, after that, it becomes a little silly trying to use it properly on the roads IMO. If I was ever to return to a UK/WRX Impreza, then it'd likely be 300/300 with a TD04 Hybrid. With the UK gear ratios it would make for a really quick point to point car with little worry about ****ting gearboxes etc. Cheers, Grant
sparky_sj04 Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 (edited) 450/500 (ish) in a Hawkeye... Maybe next year for me.. Similar level to Andy F's Spec-C, and look what that is capable of (in the right hands obviously). Edited October 20, 2009 by sparky_sj04
soundie Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 I've been playing with abotu 310/320 in my classic for about 3 years now and it really hasn't got boring for one minute. My opinion modding to more than about 340/340 on a classic, its probably diminishing returns (responsiveness etc.) considering our roads. Chris.
ciaranrb5 Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 Im running 330/320. It is pretty good just now decided that i have plenty power for now but would realy benefit from handling and stopping better. Once thats done i will be looking for 450/450 mostly for track use though.
green_goblin Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 (edited) In a classic i would say around 400 odd is good for the road but you soon get bored with it so i would say everyone to there own depending on how you drive and what your used to.......if youve had 400 for a while you will want more for the road, if your used to 300 odd, 400+ is ample........for a while Edited October 20, 2009 by green_goblin
scooby222 Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 when i got my 05 sti 4 years ago 400/400 roughly was my target with handling and brakes to match, and im now a turbo and injectors away from it. i think anymore and itd be a proper handful on wet bumpy b roads, which is my happy hunting ground not to mention mechanical peace of mind. but then i may change my mind when im there... and as others have said, not much ive driven has matched my decatted 240 ish classic for sheer driving pleasure-as mr pirelli says power is nothing without control...
johnnyr6 Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 i'm with Arch... at least 600 with a bit of lightening. Johnny
scoobzie Posted October 21, 2009 Author Posted October 21, 2009 well i am looking to shift my newage for a p1 so about the power of a 20g setup on one of them would be more that enough for me 400/400 i would go by if and when i get there i just cant seem to make up my mind i have the 20g so just need to decide on which car to put it on
RS Grant Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 If you're comfortable knowing that you'll be buying a replacement gearbox (and upgrading to a 6 speed logically) and probably switching to a 2.5 bottom end to reach 400lb/ft on a 20g'd P1 then go for it... personally, I'd keep the Bugeye STi, throw a 2.5 with some decent pistons and rods at it along with your 20g and enjoy 400/400 that way. Cheers, Grant
scoobykev Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 I've no idea how much power my slightly modded uk classic has, below 300 anyway, but having been on plenty spirited runs following scoobs of all ages with loads more power than me, claimed more anyway . i've never had any problems keeping up, granted, as stated above they'll pull away a bit on the straights, but not enough to really make any difference. Also, i can be fairly confident in the fact that i'm not going to blow out a piston or shred my gearbox. I'm not saying people shouldn't have huge horsepower cars, there's some really impressive motors in here but on the real roads it doesn't make much odds.
