Can Someone Help Me

Can someone please clear something up for me.

The little spring that connects to the gearstick linkage that helps centralise the gearstick. should the little hole for connecting the spring on the universal joint be facing up into the car or down toward the ground.

Reason is i have had a loads of problems with a gearbox i had fitted about 5 weeks ago making serious grinding noises and the gearstick being bloody loose and flopping about. took it back and guy told me it must be first gear on the box that is goosed. got a spring yesterday and put the car up in the air and i can see where one side of the spring connects to but on the universal joint the little eyelet is on the top of the universal joint looking up from under the car and looks bloody impossible to connect up the spring without bending it round the universal joint.

Cheers
