New Discs & Pads Fitted To My Bugeye

After my last service was advised to change the front & back discs so put the scoob into the local garage a month or so ago and got the front ones replaced (standard discs/pads),after looking what i paid to get them fitted decided to fit the back ones myself (the arrived yesterday)So here's a few pics and a rundown on how i did it incase anyone is interested or plannig to try changing them.

Firstly jacked up the car and removed the rear wheels

Removed the lid from the brake fluid resevoir and placed a cloth over it.

Removed the 2 x R-clips from the pins that hold the pads in.

Took out the 2 x pad holding pins and metal plate that sits on top of pads/caliper

Removed the pads/anti squeal shims.

Used a 17mm (if i remember correctly)socket and torque wrench to take off the 2 bolts that hold the caliper on and rested the caliper on the arm /anti-roll bar

**To remove the Disc i did the following;

On the back of the wheel hub /plate there's a rubber gromit, remove it and this reveals a little adjusting screw with small lugs on it,use a screwdriver and turn it downwards to adjust the brakes shoes and keep them clear of the disc rotor inside,

I then used 2 x small bolts (ones i had lying around) and screwed them into the two jacking holes on the front of the disc and slowly jacked the disc off.(this took a bit of time as i'd never done it before and was scared i broke something)

Pull the disc off

Clean everything up, inspect and work the pistons a few times.

Fit disc and mount caliper (i read on another site that the 2 x bolts for securing the caliper should be torqued to 75 Nm -so i did)

Grease up back of new discs and anti -squeal shims and slide into caliper,

Fit pins/plate and R-clips.

Re-fit wheels

Once you've done both then put on the cap for the brake fluid resevoir and adjust the brake shoe screws to suit the new discs/rotors.

This is a basic run down ,might have missed a couple things out but will give anyone who hasn't done this before an idea.

To do this took approx 15 fags and 2 cups of coffee but still alot cheaper than a garage ;)

good write up and thanks for posting.

my rears are not as fecked as yours but are getting there (looks as if there is not enough brake bias to the rear as the pads dont seem to be doing much esp on the outer edges)

G.Mac,

My pads and discs didn't look too bad on the outside ,it was the inside that was bad as shown in the pics. It's hard too see this due to the dust guard and caliper covering the inside of the disc.

Thanks for the comment
