stum450n Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 It appears that paid members don't see them if that's any help? Imho, if it adds to easing the cost of running the club, then so be it, it's all for the greater good.
pmacFTO Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 I can understand the reasoning but it puts me off forums when it's intrusive - since the new guys took over Sccobynet I've not been back - it's just too much of a business on there now. Guess I'll just need to join here! I am on so many car forums I can't join them all!

I can't see this place going that way to be honest. Go on, join. you know you want to!

mikkers Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 Presumably the extra income to the club will soon be noticed by reduced prices in the club shop, and a decrease in the membership fe.

I don't think it's down to the success of the club one way or another and I wouldn't ever suggest otherwise. I've absolutely no idea about how the club is doing outside of our region and outside of that to be honest, is only an objective guess based on what I know about how these things work. I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion you have done but essentially, the point I was trying to make is this: I don't think Phil et al would do anything other that their absolute best for this club and that anything they do decide to do, be it adding adverts to the forum or otherwise, would purely be in the best interests of the club... why would they sacrifice all the hard work and dedication that's gone into SIDC at the expense of a few ads??? Surely if the ads are so offensive, it's not out of the question to consider getting rid of them a benefit of being a full member is it?

I got the idea that maybe the club isnt successful because you said Phil and others had to personally subsidise it, that would suggest a club that is not self sufficient from subs and other revenue avenues. Please note i am not criticising Phil at all, i have no doubt he works tirelessly for the club, as do most RO's and i think his efforts to listen to some kent scoobies members and try to find a compromise were excellent, even though it ultimately fell on deaf ears. Or course he does his best for the club, it is HIS club, and i didnt suggest anything less. I was a paid up member, but i didnt rejoin for a couple of reasons. Firstly i didnt get a reminder, i literally logged in one day and was told my inbox was full (obviously as you have reduced storage as a non member) and then i noticed i have no member sign under my name, i didnt know my "time was up" so to speak. Maybe i did get a reminder by pm but maybe it was lost as my inbox went over capacity. Secondly i didnt rejoin because i didnt use any of the benefits of being a member in the first year, so i didnt really see the point. And maybe most importantly i should say the ads are a minor nuisance, i dont find them offensive but i didnt want a load of people to critcise them and then somone to just say they are helping support the club by the club being able to offer more items at a discount.

Aaah, I see! Sorry, my point was this: The club had to start somewhere and although I have to idea what outlay phil et al have nowdays [and i really wouldn't like to guess] but what I do know is that it isn't cheap to start up a forum AND keep it running as long as this one has been let alone attend all the shows, produce the magazine etc etc etc. I am in no way insinuating that the club is in trouble only that, as phil has already pointed out in the thread in general, "This site is not funded on fresh air" That aside, I think we've got our wires crossed somewhere as I do actually agree with what you're saying, particularly your last point about discounts!
m@tt untimate STImulation Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 (edited) im not reay likeing the google adds, this site was a pure subaru site and local comunity the one on the kent scoobys page isnt to bad (annoying when you get a PM) but can live with that but the googlebot add on every post comeon scoobynet hasent even gone that far however is its vital to keep the club alive then some SIDC is better than none. IMO i dont realy like it though Edited May 28, 2009 by m@tt untimate STImulation
Big 'D' Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 Im sorry but this thread makes me laugh, to be complaining about ads (viewed only by non-paid members) over all the good points that this club has to offer (to non or paid members) suggests to me that some people just wanted to have a whine about something for the sake of it (before you say it you are allowed to express your opinion). Here is my opinion, I have owned various Subarus over nearly 6 years now and have used the forum since my first scoob, firstly I would like to say that the social side of the club, be it local meets or national events is fantastic I have met loads of great and interesting people, ok there have been a few not so great but thats life, and I have been part of many great events The RB relay and the Colin McRae Gathering to mention a few, also using my local SIDC group in Oxon as an example, any of them would without second thought jump in to assist any other member / forum user out where ever they could, that alone would be worth the membership to me, you cannot buy friendship but I would happily pay the membership fee just to know that I had local friendly support with the Scoob via the club. Secondly the tech support via the forums is fantasitc, one well placed question in the right place on here and you can save the cost of the membership in one post believe me I know this to be true. Subaru main dealers and other popular Subaru supporting companies offer savings on parts and labour again the cost of membership can be saved in one service alone. Out of all the good points the club has to offer I think we can live with a few ads on the forum, it is really hard to please everyone I know but I am 100% certain that the pros of this club and the membership far out weigh the cons Cheers Iain
