Guest CRAIG D Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 (edited) EVENING ALL, After my drifting session at knockhill on saturday am 90% sure my box is buggered. About 3/4 of the way throught the session i couldnt get it in to 5th gear unless the revs went round to about 3000rpm then it went in (just). The session finished and everthing seemed ok. On the way home 1st,2nd,3rd,4th were ok but 5th crunched in Soo i thought clutch its deffo the clutch now am not to sure. The gears seem to stick real bad. The gearstick is in the neutral postion but its stuck in reverse. So now i think both clutch and box are buggered?? Has anyone got any suggestions???? This 1 is for you JOHN ST and ARCH AM getting the gearbox that spaceman had. I believe that you 2 no the history of it? Just a wee question, With my dccd fit straight on to the box and is the any modification i need to do for it to fit. Can anyone tell me the noticeable differances between uk gears and jap gears?? CAar will be used for 1/4 and trackdays mainly. Thanks guys Edited March 9, 2009 by CRAIG D
colin_ross Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Sounds like the selector. 5th and reverse are on the same shaft so that would tie in with what you describe. If it was the clutch you'd be able to get them with the engine switched off but I'm guessing you can't. Box out I'm afriad. Ps I did the same at the hill.

Looks like il be spread about the driveway floor for a day or so:( I think some of the parts may have rusted with how long you took to put it back in last time (Sorry, couldn't resist)

camcq Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Also sounds like one of (or more)the fins from the preasure plate have snapped. I say this as I also had problems geting into certain gears om my mk1 escort. When we stripped it down saw the fins broken. Changed just the preasure plate and it was fine after that.
arch Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Craig it could also be the nut on the 5th gear shaft coming loose, its a known prob, thats what destroyed the box in my RA and the initial symptoms were issues with selection of 5th gear. Or maybe something as simple as a synchro. The box grieg has is basically the same as the box I used and thrashed to death for a whole season without issue. It was my spare box which became surplus at the end of the year as I picked up another stronger varient. The box was unused by me and should be a good strong box for any car up to about 330bhp and similar torque, that said there are no guarantees in life apart from we will all croak at some point The box you had was it a TY752 or a TY754 What rear diff do you have as from memory i am pretty sure this box needs a 4.11 rear diff. That in itself shouldnt put anyone off as I am pretty sure John could provide a suitable diff at a reasonable price if required and it would take an hour to change. I personally wouldnt run the RA gear ratio's on a sprint/hillclimb car. Having taken John's advice i fitted a uk spec gearbox which had gearing more suited to my needs i.e as few gear changes as possible. The RA gearing would have resulted in excessive gear changing and as a result lost time. If I had the money at the minute I would buy this box back in an instant as I only sold it to raise funds I didnt actually want to sell it, so if you want to offer a cut price return grieg give me a phone. Hope this helps
Spaceman Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 whoops arch i thought you were going to be running to much power for the box done Craig a deal on it before i went to work if for some reason he changes his mind ill let you know Greig
arch Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Its fine mate I have more than enough things to buy to keep my bank balance occupied

arch Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Do you have a phase II (754) box? Never heard of that problem on the earlier phase I boxes but have heard of it on loads of phase II's Well I can assure you it happens I had the debris to prove it
Guest CRAIG D Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 Alrite guys thanks for the replys not been on in a while. Unsure of what box is in just now, but i assume thats its a standard RA box and rear diff. So just want to make sure that i can still fit the DCCD on to this box that spaceman has and i take it il have to change the diff aswell. Bloody car is getting on my T*ts already
