Turbo Advice

despite my promise to myself to save money ive started work on buying the next round of mods... :P

ive got a pretty good idea of what im after but im not sure about what make of turbo to go for,i know the simple option is to go for a 20g from andy f but if theres other better options id rather spend a few hundred now than having to sell on the 20g and upgrading. im aiming for up around the 400 hp mark but more important is driveability, quick spool up and pulling all the way to the redline ideally.

other things im not sure about are injectors, will 650 be big enough? and is it worth going to a 3" turbo air intake pipe?

cars an 05 sti btw

Gmac got 380+bhp out his vf35 with a methanol map on a 05 sti. standard 550 injectors, 3" zost no cats and a cai.

If you can justify the extra cost, then people seems to be getting comfortable 400+ on the MD321. As far as I understand, on a 2.0 application, you are looking at the MD321H as the MD321T is more suited to bigger capacity engines. If I was keeping my car, then I'd rather spend the extra few hundred quid on the MD321-series turbo than the 20g because I would end up looking for more and prefer to do it properly the first time round which saves money in the long run. :P

Cheers,

You dont want to hump your bottom end so what you want to do is make the power without pushing silly boost through it. MD321T in the correct trim should see 400bhp easy with an acceptable level of boost.

The best thing you can do is to speak to the man who will be mapping it. Tell him what you want and take his advice as to what set up to aim for.

Jimser runs a MD321T without trouble so far and i think it's a better turbo than a H considering it's not much laggier than the H...

I have the MD321T in my car and have had no probs and the spool up is fantastic again i have done some extra mods to get that, mines might be up for sale shortly .. :P i never went for massive BHP went for spool and tourque, whilst thease big BHP are trying to spool up im off...im sure jimser will say the same thing and it reliable not like some cars i know...??

thanks guys, sounds like a winners emerging...looks like time to get saving a bit harder!

grant, thats exactly what im thinking,id rather be overspecd than running on the edge,i just dont have the time knowledge or funds to be fixing something everytime i take it out. would rather do it right once.

so looks like a choice between 321T or H,whats the difference in revs for spool up?

and will it make a difference going to 3" inlet hose?

321T with the small inlet (63mm?) is great on a 2005 car as it has AVCS (variable valve timing) - just ask AndyF, he'll see you right!

the 321T spools 300rpm later than a 20G on a 2.0. Been checking for my P1. Dunno what the difference will be on the newer engine with the variable timing

This is when my car spools up with 321T A bar of boost by 2700rpm and full boost by 3170rpm (full boost 1.8 bar). will be changing soon tho.. :P

Hope this is a better indication.

hmm,how long does it hold boost for chris? and also drop me a line first if you are selling yours would you?

thanks wuz,i knew there had to be an advantage to having an 05,theres so many suspension bits that just dont fit!! andy will be mapping it again but i want to have a pretty good idea before i speak to him as hes always so busy! any other recomendations to ensure trouble free rev happy turbo fun? :D

current spec is 3" decat rcm exhaust(downpipe lagged), green panel filter, zero sports shiny intake bit, samco turbo hoses , ngk pfr 7b spark plugs, walbro 255 pump and of course remap from andy f

proposed spec is new turbo(looking like a 321), aps cai, kakumei gt2 spec headers & up pipe, 650 injectors, silicon turbo intake pipe, apexi boost controller and.... anything else?

and i know i nedd to sort brakes and suspension but i know what i want there,as long as the performance friction discs work from cold and dont shriek like a banshee!!

im using an md321t on my 2.0l

1 bar @3000rpm

1.6 bar @3500rpm(on v-power)

1.9 bar @3600rpm(on methanol,toluene mix)

figures are not exact but should give you a rough idea

on mine the md holds full boost up to 8000rpm

cheers jim, that sounds just right, mines tailing off just over 6000rpm and i like my revs! what made you go for the t ather than the h?

He has balls....thats why.

Remember Jimsers is a Newage JDM STI RA with a 8k red line.

But in terms of spool up...between Jims and my car...there is nothing in it side by side upto 100xxx but after that i'm offski

cheers jim, that sounds just right, mines tailing off just over 6000rpm and i like my revs! what made you go for the t ather than the h?

was looking for 500 bhp on fuel mix and knew the t was capable.only 200-300rpm later spool than the h.

1.5 bar on a t will give around 400 bhp,not sure how much boost required for the same power on an h(1.65ish?).that is assuming v power only
