gina_winder Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 I’m really struggling with filling the car up with V power (Cost of) As my car is my only car and I use it every day so I’m filling it up twice a week.!!!!!! Just wanted to know if there would be a huge issues if I alternated between a tank regular petrol and a tank of V power. Just to try and keep the cost down. I don’t drive the car hard, and try to stay of the turbo as much as I can. I also would rather not put octane boost in as that is going to take the price of regular up to V Power. Any way my question is what’s the worst that’s going to happen? (and yes I do like Dc Pepper)
emoe Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 With lower octane fuel you MIGHT get a little detonation on boost, so if you use lower grade fuel, and you drive it easy, you SHOULDNT have too much problem. I have been mixing my V-power with half a tank of 97 ron every now and then and not seen too many adverse effects. As long as you dont drive it hard, the problem of knocking shouldnt be an issue. Obviously id run a good tank of Vpower in it before you do a track day or something like that.
timmy2take Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Obviously id run a good tank of Vpower in it before you do a track day or something like that. Think I've read somewhere it takes the ecu ages to re-adjust itself to v power as it goes in a "retard" mode for lower RON fuel. So you'd have to re-set the ecu yourself. Have you worked out what the difference in savings would be? I picked up a 306 turbo diesel on a P which has a dent on every panel, but only paid £450 for it and apparently I can run it on vegetable oil which is 97p for 20 litres from Asda, if thats the case i'm def going to keep it as a second car.
swifty1981 Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 iv done the same thing iv brought a diesel escort van. it works out cheaper to run the two cars than its is to fill the scooby up every week. i was using my scooby everyday for work too

Vosa are out checking diesel vehicles for use of NON TAXED fuels, and fining the owners. One guy down here was using oil in his diesel, and using more than 1 litre per tank, and not keeping any records. Vosa caught him and fined him Tax on each mile on the vehicle, according to the manufacturers MPG. If you use a NON TAXED fuel in the vehicle you MUST keep reciepts and records of how much you used, because you WILL have to pay Duty on that fuel. In retrospect, Diesels are becoming just as expensive to run as a small eco friendly petrol car! Get something like a fiat quintychuffbucket or a panda, and use that for a daily run around. OR buy a bike!! thats what i do! no traffic worries, i can go to work on £10 a week!!

If so you are VERY mistaken mate!! youre not paying FUEL DUTY TAX on it. But then please feel free to use whatever you want! Obviously i know nothing.....again!!
danno Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 I usually fill up at Tesco as I like the fact that it's 99 octane, but everyone here seems to think V-power is better. Should I be going to Shell?

V power is also 99 ron, my car definitely runs smoother on v power and i get more mpg from it but as tws says some cars prefer tescos 99 ron
danno Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 tesco 99 mine runs crap on vpower Cool. I used to run my daily driver on V-power but since the price of petrol has gone nuts that's now rationed back to regular unleaded and to be honest I haven't noticed any difference. Just need to get the Scooby re-mapped to 102 ron so I can take advantage of Tesco 99 with added octane boost and let some of the hidden horsies out to play.
emoe Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Royal Dutch to gain Tesco as subsiduary fuel marketSuperstore giant Tesco PLC and ROYAL DUTCH have released news to the oil market that they have amalgamated their interests in forecourt supply for domestic fuels. This means Royal Dutch now become the UK's leading supplier in domestic vehicle fuels to date. that was what was written 3 years ago! Which basically says that 99ron Tesco fuel is V-Power!!! ROYAL DUTCH are the Shell Owners!!
pistonbroke2 Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 I bought a motorbike (R6) for commuting to and from work. It costs sod all to run, fill it up with £20 of V-power every fortnight and get to work in 15minutes instead of an hour. A years tax is something stupid like £40. Then the serious plus is the fact that they are brilliant fun. The scooby is my weekend toy, on occasions I use it for menial tasks, but having the bike has saved me loads, also keeps the mileage down on the car too.
shaun_at_tdi Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 My last tank of fuel was used 'conservatively'... Not once did i make boost, never went over 60mph and took my time getting there. Using Shell V-Power and costing £64 to fill up the tank, i managed to strangle 342 miles out of it. I was quite pleased until i did the same for my other car. Daihatsu Avanzato - 600cc turbo charged and 4WD (its like a mini scooby) Using Shell V-Power and costing 24.50 to fill up the tank, that managed 280 miles under the same driving conditions. The difference is amazing but i've never been so bored in all my life!

I do the same mate! with the traffic problems around my area i halve the time it takes to get to and from work on the bike, its more fun and less fuel! Costs a bit more on tyres though!
gina_winder Posted July 16, 2008 Author Posted July 16, 2008 So what you are all saying I think is that nothing will happen if I use regular petrol!!!! Unless I take it on a track day (not much chance of that) or I drive it hard.
swifty1981 Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 So what you are all saying I think is that nothing will happen if I use regular petrol!!!! Unless I take it on a track day (not much chance of that) or I drive it hard. is yours a uk or an import
gina_winder Posted July 16, 2008 Author Posted July 16, 2008 is yours a uk or an import Import on a 95 plate
emoe Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Imports should run on 99ron fuel but to be honest with you, 97 ron Super plus isnt going to do a damn thing to your engine in normal circumstances. And regardless of what everyone else says, you can run the car on 95 ron, it may pink a bit under heavly load when hot though. The best thing to do is try it. Im running my 98 model with apexi on 95 ron for daily use, and have had no problems, and the knock doesnt change even when i use boost a bit. But as always, its up to you.

Thanks for the advice though.
timmy2take Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Is it right that the early impreza imports should be fine on 95 RON anyway as they didn't have the 102 RON fuel in Japan until about 2000 or so?

They had 102ron in japan from about 93 on. It wasnt as widely available till about 96 or so, but all the JDM models required 98ron up apparently.
danno Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 that was what was written 3 years ago!Which basically says that 99ron Tesco fuel is V-Power!!! ROYAL DUTCH are the Shell Owners!! I'm not sure what this statement actually says. I used to work in a Tesco filling station and used to talk to the tanker drivers when taking deliveries. According to them (and it makes sense), everyone, Tesco, Texaco, whoever, fill their tankers from the same refuelling rigs at the big refineries like Purfleet. It's then what they add to the fuel within the tanker that differentiates them all. I've always thought that V-power is 98 ron, in which case the additives are different from 99 ron Tesco. The statement may mean that Tesco's base fuel comes from Royal Dutch tankers, but that doesn't mean that what you buy on Tesco forecourts is the same as you buy from Shell forecourts, in the same way as what you buy in Tesco Express forecourts ain't the same thing you buy from Tesco Superstore forecourts.
Kit Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Use regular unleaded with an octane booster? I can only get 97ron fuel around my parts... 115p a litre
eureka Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 victor meldrew springs to mind if its that bad SELL IT!!!!!!!!!
