buffalo
As we all know spending money on your scoob doesnt always mean modifying it, well in my case it mostly means fixing it lol. Basically thought my head gasket was gone as on start up had white smoke pouring out the exhaust for a second or two then would dissapear. nearly died at the thought of paying Subaru to remedy this as the engine would need to come out etc etc. Got a friend of a friend whos worked on cars for years and has his own ramps etc. He done the work got the full gasket kit and seals, skimmed the heads, done the timing belt, water pump and thermostat. he also changed the turbo fitted a decat up-pipe (heat wrapped) and is currently fitting lowering springs and braided brake lines and fitting my rear pads and discs. For all this he wanst £1100, now i know that there is at least 3-400 pounds of parts incl skimming the heads and he said he was taking £230 for the springs, lines and brakes. So i guess i am asking you guys what you think. does this sound fair? I think it does as the garage wanted £180 for the springs and hes taking £230 for that plus lines and brakes? i think if it was under 1k i wouldnt have bothered as it wouldve flew under the radar and i think it was obviously cheaper than Subaru its just the missus thinks its terrible. i also dont think it was the gasket as he mentioned a water leak behind the turbo and repalced clips at the header tank. could this be the cause of the smoke? Either way its working know i just guess i need know that i've got a bargain or ive not been had? Link to comment
thewelsho
Sounds like a fair price to me mate, but I don't really know. I'd have thought a cylinder head gasket would have cost more than half of that anyway. Link to comment
johnnyr6
Doesn't sound bad. What is he fitting for £230? if it's discs, pads, lines and springs that's a great price but it will be o.e spec pattern parts and personally i would be very wary about some of this, (ask Playsatan). Oe discs from camskill (decent discs) and yellow stuff pads (one of the cheaper decent pads) would cost around £150 alone. As for the cause of the smoke you'll prob never know but if it's gone now... sorted. i rekon you've not been had. Johnny Link to comment
