scoobnoob Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Hi all, looking for some advice I’ve been getting work done to my 95 wrx that I’ve had for the last six months, mostly mechanical stuff, making sure the engines sound. Planning on using it for some track days at knockhill, so I think the next step is upgrading the brakes. I’ve been looking at sti 4 pot callipers, and brembo’s. Thinking I may save money with the sti 4 pots, but also thinking the Brembo’s might be worth splashin the extra dosh Can anyone give me an idea, how much of a difference there is between these brakes on track days?

When I got my car mapped from the standard 220bhp to 340bhp, I totally destroyed my nearly new standard discs with standard WRX MY06 4-pots (warping and heat fracturing!). Even with the standard power, I ruined a set of discs, but with the remap etc. the destruction was night and day compared to the first time! I now run Brembos (from STI MY04) which are not only much more efficient, they are way more durable as well. The disks I got with the 2nd hand kit were 2 years old and had already seen track days. While they are past their best, there was no destruction. Therefore, buy the best you can afford, especially if you're going to be tracking the car. My tuppence worth.

Standard subaru 4 pots are cast iron and retain alot of heat and have a small piston diamater. Brembos are alloy, have a larger piston area and pad size and dissipate heat a lot more effectively. Big difference. However, if you are going to uprate your calipers for track use, I would recommend also upgrading to two piece disks with alloy bells and powervane type rotors as they are much lighter and much more effective at shedding heat, thus reducing fade. I upgraded to compbrake pro-race1 4 pot calipers and 330mm disks with alloy bells and they are simply amazing. Before I would have to come in every 6-7 laps and let the brakes cool, even with red-stuff pads and racing fluid. With my current set up, fade has been eliminated during track use, I can stay out as long my tank's full and I have shaved seconds from my lap times.
eurosti Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 I would go for a Brand new K-Sport 8 pot kit! There is a group buy on SN at the moment, you wont get better for the price! Fitted mine and they are really strong. Had the 4 pots aand they didnt fair well on the ring!

Had a look at some of the suggested kit, all looks very good, and is something I could maybe think about next year, but currently way out of the budget :-( Does anyone know any good suppliers of second hand brembo’s? Cheers
