WRX04 Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 Hi, Recently bought a 54plate WRX and i'm finding the brakes aren't up to the job. The brakes start off powerful enough but getting fade through heat is a real problem. As the discs have a slight warp I'm planning on replacing them. I had considered some OEM discs with aftermarket fast road pads, alternative is some drilled discs with aftermarket pads. I don't want to change my calipers so it's the 296mm? options i'm interested in.....any suggestions? Also, i'm looking for a fruitier backbox, any feedback on the Hayward and Scott classic style? Thanks.
scoobyiain Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 OEM discs with DS2500 pads and braided lines will see a nice improvement. As for the backbox, go for the afterburner vortex
paul555sti Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 Cant help to much with the advice but give http://www.asperformance.com/ or http://www.godspeedbrakes.co.uk/home.htm and i am sure they will point you in the right direction. Another thumbs up for the afterburner vortex. ( made by hayward and scott )

scoobyiain Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 Sorry i forgot about that, welsho is correct. I spoke to Alyn at as performance and he sorted me out with new discs, just the same size as the OEM ones but a little better suited for the pads. Not that expensive either.
WRX04 Posted April 24, 2008 Author Posted April 24, 2008 Thanks for the suggestions. Any idea what dics you got? Are the drilled/grooved or just plain? Regarding the Vortex, how does it sound? I don't like the note that the majority of the Slash cut exhausts give (4"-5" jobs with the smaller internal pipe) but the majority i've heard that look similar to the Std STI backbox sound sweet. Don't want anything that's going to deafen me on the m/way! Cheers.
C_WRX Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 I have the same year car and with discs being warped last year I gave asperformance a call (Alyn) and he said for next step up from OEM discs and pads was just to stick with OEM discs and get performance pads. Narrowed it down to 2 types of pads (well that he supplied anyway) both being similar in ability, ending up with Pagids. Good braking ability with an instant feel improvement but finding bit messy on the alloys. I'd say that what I did is really only next step up from OEM but do notice a difference.

Here's a video of my H&S Classic style backbox and de-res centre section: I've now got a 3rd cat delete, 100cell sportcat downpipe and STi up-pipe (no CAT) so sounds a bit meatier than this now!!
