buffalo Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Got offered these from a guy that smashed his 03 STI brand new in the box. Was only planning on fitting the Tein springs i got (thanks Welsho) and some whiteline good when i amassed some cash. So a couple of simple questions, 1. Are they any good? 2. How much should i offer him?

Dunno much they are worth, probably wouldn't bet much change out of £600 for them I'd reckon, maybe more. I got the Tein Superstreets and they were £650 (I think). What's the guy doing with his gear box?
buffalo Posted April 4, 2008 Author Posted April 4, 2008 dont have a clue, if i'm honest he stopped me in sainsburys car park. thought he was a bit dodgy at first but he showed me pictures the car on his phone and seems to know his stuff. said he'd be breaking it over the next couple of months but i dont know if he ment just the mods or the whole car. can give you his number. would do any harm to text i wouldnt think

The prop shafts are a longer in the WRX and the box is shorter. I'd propbably need to change out the box, the diffs and the shafts - talking funny money there and I dunno what nick they'd be in. What happened to his car anyway?
gus the bus Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 (edited) The D2's are a decent enough unit with plenty of adjustments available. 36 points in the damping, height adjustable and camber adjustment available too. You can get them brand new for approx £580-600 imported so depending on age condition you should get them for £250ish!!? Hope this helps? Gus Edited April 4, 2008 by Gus the Bus
buffalo Posted April 4, 2008 Author Posted April 4, 2008 yeah he said 300 so i'll see if he'll take 250 says he paid 550. found a post on another website says the coilovers are poor, harsh ride and break after 6 months? is this just one guys bad experience? he lost it on black ice, says he wasnt goin that fast, pranged the passenger side........... tbh as i'm writing this i am struggling to remember exactly what he told me as i wasnt really interested. think he tried to fix it himself but its still pulling to the left so going to take the good bits off it n sell it. bent subframe probably? he's got a 20g turbo too up for grabs, says he was running over 400bhp, dunno but cus thats sum serious modding. bought it with 4k on the clock and spent the last 3 yrs doing it up

I would say it is someones bad experience. There is no doubt tho they are VERY firm compared to struts with springs. Gus
buffalo Posted April 4, 2008 Author Posted April 4, 2008 i have always ran lowering springs on my previous cars but dont have first hand experince of coilovers. since owning the impreza i have really enjoyed the ride comfort and dont know as to what extent to compromise that. however i understand that running a 5yr old car and shocks on lowered springs wont last long and the struts would need replaced pretty soon i would imagine. my only fear is that i buckle a wheel, but i suppose a simple solution would be to actively avoid pot holes lol. i am presuming the handling when set up correctly is second to none? i also cant get past the idea of full new suspension for that price?

Billy TBH mate, unless you are going to be doing track work, I'd probably avoid COs. They are pretty harsh on the ride side of things, but of course the handling is good. That said. those springs that you have along with one or two other little bits like droplinks and an ALK with fast-road geometry settings, will improve the handling of the car out of sight from the standard set up. This will be more than adequate for road-use and even works well on the track. Don't worry about your struts... I know a guy that has a full set of them lying in his garage with about 20k on them - LOL! Perhaps the £300 would be better spent on that. Hypertech, IIRC do free fitting on the ALK and the Droppies - as they do with all Whiteline goodies. Just check that first of course.
Boydie. Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 D2s aren't very highly rated among Honda owners (Sorry!) around here. They're reknown for bursting and leaking - eventually causing a knocking noise. Not exactly what you want from 300 quid + coilovers. Plus they're purple. PURPLE! I'm not sure if this would differ for the Subaru models, just a wee bitty of a warning. They share their design & internals with a company called KSport (Sorta orangey bronze colour), again - Reknown for leaking and then knocking as an effect. I've read on this site about Hypertechs fast road setup - I'd maybe concider this before going for Coilovers. Like TheWelsho says, they ARE harsh on a daily basis - Depends how comfortable you like the car i suppose! Hope to help somewhat...
buffalo Posted April 5, 2008 Author Posted April 5, 2008 cheers guys for the replys, think i was just getting carried away with the idea of having coilovers on my car, another tick in the box if you know what i mean lol. i dont do track days, mainly because everday in the polo mint citys a track day to me lol but seriously after a little probing it seems only to be mainly poor reviews of them, and i dont want to comprimise the ride comfort to that extreme either. yeah hypertech will fit 22mm rear ARB, ALK and drop links and fast road set up for £409 so think i will just go for that once my brakes finally turn up PS, Welsho that garage of yours sounds like an aladins cave lol
