2087 Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 (edited) hey folks, was on the way home from work last night and my car decided to more or less just stop. was giving it a bit of juice, as you do, when my knock link went crazy right into the red and the car just gradually lost power until it finally came to a halt. It is not refusing to start, it will start for maybe 2 seconds then stall, sounds like a tractor trying to start up. any ideas? car is halfway between home and work, need to get the fker towed back in lol cheers UPDATE FOR 05/04/2008 JUST TOWED THE CAR TO MY MUMS GARAGE, AND LOW ANE BEHOLD, IT STARTED. DIDNT RUN IT FOR LONG DUE TO THE KNOCK LINK SITTING 1 OFF THE MAX AND A HORRENDOUS BANGING (METAL TO METAL BY THE SOUNDS OF IT) COMING FROM THE ENGINE, AS YOU LOOK AT THE ENGINE BAY I WOULD SAY IT IS AT THE RIGHT HAND SIDE JUST UNDER THE INTERCOOLER. IM THINKING STILL A BIG PROBLEM, BUT NEONE WITH SOME KNOWHOW SHED ANY MORE LIGHT? Cheers Edited April 5, 2008 by 2087

That said, if it sounds bad when starting it, it might be coilpacks or plugs, no? I'm not the best to ask, hopefully someone with more knowhow than me will be along. I tend to think the worst, because with me it usually is. LOL!!!

emoe Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 I get the feeling you either have bad luck with turbo'd cars or are ragging the **** out of them expecting them to perform way above their safe limit. The scoobs and celicas are made to run UNDER their max power limit for safetys sake by the manufacturer. We can get a bit more out of them and use that safety zone a bit. BUT unless you start to change internals, if you run them at high speed for prolonged periods, you stress the internals beyond their capabilities. The rally engines we built could take the extra power output, (most of you guys are running MORE than a rally car anyway!) but could do it for prolonged periods. Never-the-less, these engines were rebuilt after a few HOURS of work not MONTHS or Years!! Track days are hard on the engine, but noone does track days EVERY day either. Loads of factors play in whats happened here. Oil changes? Cool down periods? warm up times? what did the previous owner do? When i sold my EVO6 to someone, they said they had bought another one and it blew up within weeks. They found out that the previous owner had turned the boost up, ragged it and got the stratings of failure. so he put the boost down to lower than factory and sold the car! this poor guy bought it and ran it, turned the boost back up to factory and POP!! i echo what i said earlier, too many variables too many things that can go wrong.
superstar_tradesman Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 see the below link, always a good place to start reading ecu codes
thefastone Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Yeah the scoobypedia article, that's a very good guide on how to do it, just print it off and take it out to the car with you...
thewelsho Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Yeah the scoobypedia article, that's a very good guide on how to do it, just print it off and take it out to the car with you... Don't you need some fancy gadget to tell you what the code is in the first place?
nanaki Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 on your fat boy you do classics however can connect a couple of plugs under the dash and the cel light will flash the error codes.
thewelsho Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 bottom end is away, gutted Yeah, as I said, sounded bad, sorry to hear it mate, hope you get it sorted out again soon.
superstar_tradesman Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 nightmare mate, but just need to build a stronger one now, I'd recomend Hypertech in Bonnybridge
thewelsho Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 nightmare mate, but just need to build a stronger one now, I'd recomend Hypertech in Bonnybridge Yeah, they did mine. Engine out and split your looking at around £700 labour alone Mind you, I had some other bits and bobs fitted, but vast majority of the work was down to the engine. Keep us posted.
