thewelsho Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Something seems to be seriouly wrong with the car. I was driving along about 35 mph suddenly the cracking and raking sound comes from the front of the car, like flailing metal. I pulled over and can't see anything. I got back in the car and attempted to pull off slowly. As I got tothe bite point, the car clunked and jarred forward I then continiued on very slowly for about 2 miles till I got home. While on the way home I was in 2nd gear then I changed up into third and the racket got much worse, sounded like metal breaking. I am going to jack it up and see if a drive shaft is gubbed but one of my mates who knows a bit about cars thinks its the gear boc or clutch. When I roll the car in neutral, I still get the sound, even with the car off. Any ideas? Thanks!
RA Dunk Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 (edited) i couldent tell you what it could be but when you hear the sound of metal against metal it isnt a good sign john is it sounding ok when its ticking over? or when its not moving Edited March 18, 2008 by Ac!D

colzo Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Sh!t that doesn't sound good mate. Something always seems to happen after a track day. Hope its not as bad as it sounds.
thewelsho Posted March 18, 2008 Author Posted March 18, 2008 (edited) Sh!t that doesn't sound good mate. Something always seems to happen after a track day. Hope its not as bad as it sounds. Lucky white heather. It has got worse. Firstly, I jcked it up and there is no sign of any damage around the shafts etc. I don't knwo where the front pully is Geo. I don't think it is engine related though. The car ticks over fine and revs fine. When I roll the car in neutral with the engine OFF it makes the sound then it LOCKs up and stops dead. I decided to put it in the garage so as I was reverseing very slowly the sound was still there but this time in the space of about 50 feet the car locked three tiems and I had to lift high on the clutch to free it. When I see free it, it clunked loudly and kinda shot back. Bad news man, I think it must be gear box or diff. Edited March 18, 2008 by TheWelsho
eurosti Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 I once saw a car that had a similar noise, turns out the flywheel had come loose of the back of the crank but you say the noise is from the front! As Geo has said maybe the crank pulley!

higgy Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 when you were at kh on saterday , were you geting alot of wheel spin or the revs picing up and you were not going forward, if so you have done the same as me two years ago. higgi if you think this is feesable pm me
eurosti Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 You may be able see in there if you remove the grommet on the rhs off the engine where the gearbox connects, failing that John engine out! It would make alot of noise whilst running though!

As I said, it only makes the sound when the car is in motion. Otherwise it sounds fine. So not a crank/pully then? Edited March 18, 2008 by TheWelsho
colin_ross Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Doesn't sound like an engine or crank pully issue to me. Much more likely it's the box, clutch, diff or brakes. Start with the basics, same noise no matter what gear your in? Does it speed up with the revs or with the speed of the car? Does it change when you touch the brakes? Any vibes through the pedals ot gearstick?
colin_ross Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Oh yeah, when was the last time you had the wheels off or checked the brake pads?
RA Dunk Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 running 400/ft/lb through a WRX gearbox (especially with track use) and it could possibly be the box thats sha99ed
eurosti Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Dont think its the pulley then mate i would say driveline related some good advice from playsatan above!

Speeds up with motion, not revs. No change when the brakes are touched, no vibes through the pedals or gear stick. Just a constant cllinking sound then a loud clunk as it locks up, then it frees up with a jolt.
marky.t.s Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 bad news mate, hope you get to the bottom of it soon.
colin_ross Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Jack it up one corner at a time and turn the wheels, sounds like a diff, cv, bearing or brake problem to me. And as I mentioned, when was the last time you had the wheels off or checked the brake pads?
jodie typeRA Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 (edited) stab in the dark coming up (im sure ill get shot down iff its a daft 1) iff it was the gearbox would droping the oil not tell ya (bits off metal in the oil ) hope you get it sorted & it dont cost ya to much mate Edited March 18, 2008 by jodie typeRA
colin_ross Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Not a bad suggestion at all Jodie and John may have to do that but I'd suggest checking the easier things first.

And as I mentioned, when was the last time you had the wheels off or checked the brake pads? Colin. I had the wheels of on Friday night and Sunday afternoon for the track. I never noticed any probs with the pads, but then again I never looked. I will jack it up tomoz and do as you suggested. After that, I will drain some of the GB oil to see if this any metal bits in it. Thanks folks, great help as usual.
colin_ross Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Colin. I had the wheels of on Friday night and Sunday afternoon for the track. Right, first thing to check in that case is that the wheel nuts are not loose. Very common mistake.

P1Andy Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Think its likely to be the diff from what you describe.
