Mildly Tuned Jdm95 Wrx Vs Newage Sti?

Hi folks.

Ive been thinking about changing car for a bit now and spotted a 03 plate STI for sale near by. Not been to see it yet but will try to check it out in the next few days.

My current steed is sitting on STI suspension, strut braces, with full decat panel filter and apexi ( andy f ) running upwards of 280 BHP 250Ft/lbs on th e dastek rollers.

So question is, do you folks think the STI may feel a bit soft compared with my current setup ?

Am i likely to feel any difference in power?

I know its difficult for you folks to say but ive never driven a newage STI to compare against. However given the hike in power on my current car and the stiff ride quality and great handling ( Extreme motorsport prodrive geometry ) i currently enjoy id always had a feeling that my current car would be quite similar to the STI .

If this is the case is there any point in me changing?

so peeps any comments welcome.

Cheers

The newage will feel like a bus after a quick classic. One reason why I left the subaru scene, classics were getting a bit long in the tooth and newages are just too cumbersome unless you throw thousands at them.

If your going from a classic with the power your running .Better off with a Stippp or get a Jdm sti

Thanks for the comments so far

Kind of thought what has been said so far.

just dont want to find myself paying 10K + for a car and then a few more to make it as fun as the current one.

But as said test drive is the way forward and if all goes well tomorrow ill try to organise one.

Im sure ive read various bits about bad rear shocks on newages, so am i just looking for noisy shocks or can they be detected by the handling?

Cheers

My WRX with basic suspension mods, VF35 & remap dispatched a RB5 with PPP with relative ease on a twisty section of B-road.

An STi will feel more planted and quicker with the 6 speed box.

If I were you I'd test drive one first. They are 250% stiffer too and WAY more reliable given that it's been 7 years since classics stop production

Will it be a daily drive ?

You'll hear the shocker son rough ground at low speed or whilts reversing slowly.

My rear ones knocked for ages and I never noticed much in the way of handling issues

When I changed the rear shockers I got Prodrive Springs and Geo - alignment done

Hope this helps ?

Thanks Cal & Dipsy ( sounds like a trippy kids CBeebies show :D )

It will be a daily driver but im not doing too many miles these days so im quite happy with a sporty ride quality. The current car is pretty harsh but not beyond reason so as long as the newage is not too soft ill be happy.

Whats the out the box UK STi BHP/ Torque? And what will andy f be able to get with say a sports cat/ decat using ECUTEK?

Oh and whats a reasonable price range for an O3 plate with 70K ish miles?

Keep the comments coming, i know i may seem like ive done no research and im lazy but some of the best advice i had over the last few years has been from here so im just cutting out the middle man :D .

Cheers again folks.

Go and drive it and see for yourself.

Everyones idea and opinion will differ.

Had spotted your motor G.mac but it sounds like a animal and id prefer black or blue ( which the car in question is ) :D

If the weather stays this wet i might wait to test drive it. Or back up a wet test drive with a dry one next week.

At the moment im 50:50 as to weither or not i bother changing motors but if it feels right and the trade in price for my steed is right then who knows.

Cheers folks

I think you will feel the difference as the Newage car is so much stiffer than the classic but it's a lard ar5e no doubt...

Go for test drive and see for yourself.

IMO, your peace of mind will be massively increased if buying a Newage STi... stiffer shell, stronger box, stronger bottom end, pretty unstressed turbo etc. Plus, dont worry about an STi being too soft, they have quite an 'informative' ride. :D

Pretty sure that a Stock Newage STi is 265ps with the PPP taking it to 305ps. However, with a basic de-cat/sports cat system, filter, fuel pump and re-map then you'll be around 325bhp which makes for a quick car that would definitely pull from your Classic WRX, as standard though, I'd be surprised if there was a massive amount in it although your current car should pull away slightly being 280bhp in a lighter car. :D

Cheers,
