the_cueball Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 Hi, I have just got round to getting my self a UK spec '99 turbo wagon.... not my ideal choice, but as it's my 6th form of transport (4 cars and 2 bikes), I didn't have much arguement with the mrs!!! Anyway, I must say that after waiting all these years for one, I am a little disapointed with it......hopefully it's just that my car requires some work.. Anyway, a few problems that I have, can anyone help with some ideas/help????? 1) It takes ages to get started - cranks for a good 5 or 6 seconds before the engine catches - I'm keeping my foot off the loud pedal. 2) I have managed to fade the brakes ever time I have had it out so far, I think the driver side caliper is sticking, but apart from that, has anyone got a good brake upgrade? 3) There is an oil leak somewhere, that only appears if I park nose first down a hill, I was told it is a common problem, and they thought it may be the rocker cover???? 4) It's really slow!!!!! I'm looking to boost the power up to the 300 ish mark.........Has anyone got a safe way to do so for the UK spec cars?? I am going to give the car a service, get the plugs, oil changed etc so hopefully this will help it out a little bit, but all help and advice is appreciated. Cheers CB
thewelsho Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 Sell that car, and the rest of your cars (keep one for the wife) and one of your bikes (keep one for the thrill that it must provide) and buy a Newage. Oh, and welcome to the SIDC.
scoobymadburd Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 Hi and welcome to scottish scoobies we have a 97 uk wagon and have roughly the power you are wanting but it takes a lot of work. We have a fully decatted exhaust with 5 inch exit and an induction with hks dumpvalve, we also upgradded our standard intercooler to one from a WRX 02 plate ( Good upgrade for a classic and are often on ebay or in the sales section) and have the walbro fuel pump and regulator also. Rocker covers are common on the uk wagons and are easily purchased from Subaru and are not that expensive either As for brakes we have crap 2 pot brakes on the front and then upgraded them to subaru 4 pots but u need a decent disk and pad in order to get good braking we have Black diamond drilled and grooved discs and pads sorry u are having trouble with your wagon but trust me get it running right and you wont regret it. Claire Good luck
scooby222 Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 welcome to the club and kiss goodbye to your credit limit! someone with more knowledge will be along im sure but i wold suggest always letting the fuel puump prime when you turn the key before you start it,tas they should start no probs. brakes arent up to sprited driving, even the four pots,id recommend braided hoses, new fluid, stripping and cleaning the calipers and decent discs and pads-i cracked eveery set of subaru discs i had buut no problems once i switched to mintex ctech discs and pads, though really you want to aim for new age sti brembo calipers and discs or a proper aftermarket setup. not suure about the oil im afraid, and i wouldnt have thouught yould find it that slow but then it depends what your used to? if your other motors are fireblades, tweaked skylines etc. then youl always be dissapointed unless you spend big money. for a start id recomend a good service, panel filter, full decat/sports cat and an ecutek remap from andy forrest. couple that with the sti brembos and sti6/p1 suspension and you should have a good reliable, quick entertaining car. scoobs arent the best car for big power straight liners but perfect for a road car that youu can use all of the power all of the time, hope that helps a bit
the_cueball Posted December 29, 2007 Author Posted December 29, 2007 Hi and thanks for the help... My car already has a scooby sport exhaust from the cat back and a bailey dump valve....and I have a STI strut brace on route as we speak. I'm glad it sounds like the probs i'm having have been seen before/ people are used to them, I've waited ages to get a impreza turbo!!!!!!! Anyway, my plan of attack was going to be something like: 1) Service 2) Upgraded clutch (I always seem to destory these along with the brakes) 3) Brakes / Suspension - I was thinking HiSpec big brake conversion with some coilovers poss. Teins... 4) FMIC and oil cooler 5) Sell the house, the wife, everything else I own to pay for it all...... Never thought of the remapped ECU, should I get this done after everything else?????? I'll have to check that out.. Thanks for all the help!!!!!!! CB

CB First scoob was a 99 wagon and looking back itwasn't a rocket but a few more ponies and decent set up suspension and brakes should see you keeping off most things I upgraded the brakes to grooved and drilled discs with mintex 1155 pads which was a vast improvement but to get a bit more braided lines and dot 5.1 fluid should do the trick. Current car has wilwood 6 pots which are good when warmed up but should really come into there own on track. Suspension wise personally i'd avoid coilovers as there usually far 2 hard for normal road use and i had to remove the ones that came on my Sti before they bounced me into the hedge A good set of Sti stuff should do fine along with uprated drop links and ARB's and strut braces. The man to speak to about a remap and the best options to get more power is Andy forrest in port seton who has put many many smiles on faces round here. Theres so much you can do and be warned it's VERY VERY addictive and expensive Steve

scouk Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 Some typical potential bhp levels here Tuning levels Nice bit of information there! Nice one! Just a queston though... On the 01-05WRX page the titlee says " 01-05 WRX 2.0 UK/EURO STD 218/225 BHP" I never realised there was a difference between the UK and EU spec impreza.. What's the difference? Where does the extra power come from?
RS Grant Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 Think that it means that a WRX has one of two power levels, depending what year you go for.. a Bugeye will be 215bhp and a Blobeye will be 225bhp. Cheers, Grant

Hepy Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 (edited) What made you think it was gonnae be fast? It only has about 212 bhp ffs. Plus power sapping awd. Edited December 30, 2007 by Hepy
fai17 Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 Some typical potential bhp levels here Tuning levels Firstly don't listen to this man....he has an art of making your car dangerously fast....trust me i know! Secondly...hi and welcome to SIDC
the_cueball Posted December 31, 2007 Author Posted December 31, 2007 I had another look at the DIY electrics in the car today, and noticed that the battery was discharged..... A quick replacement later (well not that quick, bolts sheering off, electrical wires to repair etc), and nothing changed...... so I think the starting issue may be the starter motor on the way out. On a plus note, I did notice that the car runs better, and there is a noticable difference in the pick up, so it is a bit faster and smoother now! On a bad note, it reminded me that the caliper is sticking on and the brakes are s***t....well the back end of the 66B did a good job of that as well. The oil leak seems to be getting worse as well......so clutch and rocker gasket then brakes ASAP me thinks!! CB

the_cueball Posted January 1, 2008 Author Posted January 1, 2008 And you still have not sold it ! C'mon mate.... Lose it. Why would I want to do that???? I have waited ages to get a scoobie.....ok the one I have may not be the best, but in a couple of months - with some hard work and some £££, it will be running great!! If I can get it running half as well as my old Pulsar, then I will be a really happy person.... CB
