martin_allen Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Does anyone know the best place to get some decent winter or all weather tyres fitted around the central belt? needs two fronts but been advised that sports tyres like GSD3's don't work that well when it gets cold and you are better off with something that can take a lower temperature. Seen a few places online that will deliver but does anyone know a good place to get them fitted (preferably with SIDC discount heh) and any idea on a good tyre from said fitter? advice appreciated, 5t.
HairyDJ Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I bought Toyo Snow Prox last year from Blackcircles and was very happy with them - probably going to change them back on next week - I have a second set of wheels to make life easy & keep the tyre fitting costs down. They don't come cheap from anywhere - expect £100 plus per corner and try to avoid getting dumped with last year's stock as you will get several years out of a set & don't want the rubber older than it has to be. Take a look at http://www.blackcircles.com and choose your tyre size etc - the online choice will suggest fitting depots near your postcode - they deliver tyres to the depot & you just turn up to have them fitted as part of the price. Give them a call and ask if they give SIDC discount - I managed to get 5% by asking - if not then drop me a PM for a code that will also get you 5% If you're near a Costco place, then they do the Michelin winter tyres - worth the joining fee to get the discount on my summer tyres from them. If you don't mind finding your own fitter 7 lugging 4 tyres along on your back seat - plus the part used ones coming home all dirty, then might be worth a look at http://www.camskill.co.uk - ring them to see if there's a discount or deal for SIDC? Good luck, you won't regret making the switch! Cheers, David
martin_allen Posted November 14, 2007 Author Posted November 14, 2007 Thanks David. Always used Camskill in the past but finding a fitter has been tricky! Blackcircles can be either really good or not so fab i've found so was wondering if anyone has had anything done locally. I am going to ask at Grieve's and probably send her to Hypertech for alignment too! 5t.
marky.t.s Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Jim Dickson,Cumbernauld village,good prices and fast friendly fitting.
thefastone Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 well for winter tyres, you cant go far wrong with Michelan Pilot alpin... its the only michelan tyre I would ever recomend...
iainc Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 well for winter tyres, you cant go far wrong with Michelan Pilot alpin...its the only michelan tyre I would ever recomend... We fitted them to the Leon my wife drives last winter. Not a fan of them at all. The wife likes them well enough but for me it felt like there was no grip and I just had no confidence in them at all (was the PA2's we fitted). When I was looking at winter tyres for the scoob this year I was originall going to get a set of Nokian WR G2's (mytyres had them for £80-90 IIRC), think it would have been up to about £400 all in fitted, etc.
thefastone Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Yeah thats how I normally feel about Michelans summer tyres... Utter Crepe... I dont know, I thought better of that ones as winter tyres, I know that JohnS recomends them also, but then Horses for corses...

I dont know, I thought better of that ones as winter tyres, I know that JohnS recomends them also, but then Horses for corses... Was partly based on his recommendation that we got them. Think I'm just too used to the likes of bridgestones with the stiffer walls so the extra flex in the walls, plus the extra flex in the tread of the winter tyres just made me feel unsafe... honestly thought the first few miles that I was gonna end up in a ditch or field John said that Jools had used and liked Nokians in the past so I was going to use them this winter (until I got a good deal on bigger alloys and tyres ). Wish you could test the tyres out before buying them though, get a feel for whether you like them or not before spending £100+ a corner.
thefastone Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Yeah it does bite when you buy tires that you dont like...
martin_allen Posted November 16, 2007 Author Posted November 16, 2007 Hmmm Nokian or Snowprox at the moment then chaps. Informative debate thank you! 5t.
iainc Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Hmmm Nokian or Snowprox at the moment then chaps. Informative debate thank you!5t. Actually maybe that's something that can be sorted out within the SIDC... a winter tyre test for scoobs. Maybe get a list of the usual winter options (Michelon, Bridgestone, Nokians, etc), possibly just thru' members who have them fitted to their cars, and then get a number of others to try them out and try and find a winner out of them. A possibility?
thefastone Posted November 17, 2007 Posted November 17, 2007 I think that it is a possibility, only thing is different people have different ideas, and really to be objective, you'd need all tyres to be tested by one car/driver... just to get the difference...
frank c Posted November 17, 2007 Posted November 17, 2007 (edited) I got my last set from here http://www.tyretraders.com/TyreSearch/Default.aspx They didn't always have a huge range but the prices were good at the time. I think mine were T1R 215/40/17 £240 delivered to my door 2 days later. I know it can be a hassle to get them fitted but I'm sure someone on here could help with that .. Must admit, never really liked the T1R's, should have gone for the T1s's. For my winter wheels I still have the F1's fitted, great tyre for the winter - wet and dry. What I meant was 6 people with different winter tyres on their car get together and try them all out in each others cars (or one car and swap the wheels over if you want to keep everything fair so that suspension, etc doesn't play a part in the outcome). Could do a test run over a few things, standing water, dry road, greasy road, snow, ice, etc. Would probably need to be done over quite a while to get all of the conditions though.
thefastone Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 Yeah that could work Iain! Youve pretty much covered the bases there...
