scouk Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 (edited) Every time i organise one for the Highlands the turn out from the Northern lads is usually quite poor. I'd of liked to be involved in one fo the bigger runs (managed to make the McRae one but that was special). Mainly because of the hassle and cost to drive from Elgin down to Perth (or wherever) then back up to highlands for the run and back to perth and back home again. May sound cheeky but I did consider asking for the meeting points along the way and coming down from the north to meet 1/2 way or something then come back up. Two separate runs that meet up on the glorious Scottish highlands! But as I say it may be conceived cheeky just to turn up to a couple meeting places and not take part in the full run. As for the main topic here .I don’t really want to comment, as I'd consider myself for the slow>medium category.. I love driving especially on good challenging Scottish roads, but I'm not a fan of the really high speed stuff I don’t see it necessary and at excessive speeds where any slight problem and you'd be in serious trouble!!. That doesn't really do anything for me I'm afraid (Un-Surprisingly this comes from an Young Driver rep for the IAM). This may well put a black mark against me for my attitude but the point is, I accept some drivers like to really shift the car, and TBH I respect those that do! Getting the best of the Impreza! Magnificent machine! My feeling is just that the open public roads aren’t appropriate for it.. Get me a safe open space where I can play and I'll happily drive at the limit of the car and my ability! What is needed is something like an old airfield... {edited for WAY too many typos} Edited October 15, 2007 by ScoUK
marky.t.s Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 The explanation is in the bit you deleted. Nutters that get out the car park last pull some shady manouvers just to get to the front of the group, solve the problem by putting all the people into groups they feel comfortable inOf course i am going to say to the leader of the first group now keep it under 60 and no overtaking but wether that group leader listens to me or not is another story but i can assure you the general group safety is the group leaders responsablity. After organising 7 runs over 4 years and no serious accidents or incidents and covering an average of 250 miles per run i think the groups is the better solution to letting people leave point A willy and indeed nilly. aye,and i'm always at the back.......i must get more P...O...W..E...R!!!!
craig_harey Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 And when us northern lads organised something for santa cruise there was a poor turnout, only yourself, imy and nanaki turned up. Ian i could not make it due to having the flu wouldn t have ordered tickets and donated a £50 voucher if i had no intension of going so hope not a dig in my direction.
RA Dunk Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Fair enough having groups as 50 cars is a bit much but why the need to categorise them. People with no fear and like to push the limits should only push those limits on a track and not public roads. So why bring it up in sidc Grants idea of the groups is by far the best and "SAFEST" way to organise a run, put all of the quicker lads out in front away from everybody else, mix everybody up and you`ll have people overtaking everybody else because of slower cars infront of them
scoobyiain Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Your organisational skills are not in question here grant. I asked why categorise them? why cant you just have 4 groups going at a normal pace and leave the limit pushing to knockhill?

Agreed mate but Perth is nigh on 100 miles from my front door. The idea of using Perth as a starting point is its about as central as can be and is equidistant from all areas, thus not favouring one area as a starting point. The first Highland Run we done i covered about 550 miles, on rock hard HKS coilovers, from door to door and included Lossiemouth as a Shell refuelling point You really dont have to do the full run, many people bug out at the closest point to home which is fair enough. The days are desigened as social days and are to be used to get to know the people behind the keyboards and have a good laugh. Meeting points are a good idea but sometimes can be tricky to pull off due to pee stops and ice cream stops and oh #### we are lost stops. Next run, maybe Highland way depending on repsonse from Northern club members, is either April or May next year and there is a monster weekend run next Aug to Oxfordshire, this Aug run will be guarenteed to be Scoobyiain friendly as its all motorway and will be under 60mph in one massssssssssive convoy.

I asked why categorise them? why cant you just have 4 groups going at a normal pace and leave the limit pushing to knockhill? because he cant control everybodys speed can he? so it makes sense to let the people who prefer to go that little bit quicker go out infront away from everybody else

wilky Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Quite simple. Put all your lunatics and potential lunatics into thier own groups and keep them away from people who want to go slower. If the lunatics pile in, its thier own fault. Rather than have them in with slower people, and scaring the meek.

I asked why categorise them? why cant you just have 4 groups going at a normal pace and leave the limit pushing to knockhill? In the real world it does not happen, in an ideal world yes by all means i would prefer to doddle about Bob Marley style and enjoy the scenery but as Dunc says Grants idea of the groups is by far the best and "SAFEST" way to organise a run, put all of the quicker lads out in front away from everybody else, mix everybody up and you`ll have people overtaking everybody else because of slower cars infront of them There will always be people that want to go quicker than others so we need to address the problem by acknowledging it and dealing with the problem the best way possible. After 7 runs over 4 years and various ideas i have found this is the best solution. Next run i could pay AndyF to restrict all our cars electronically and out of 50 cars that turned up about 2 would turn up for next run.

scoobyiain Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 , this Aug run will be guarenteed to be Scoobyiain friendly as its all motorway and will be under 60mph in one massssssssssive convoy. When in convoy to the meeting place in perth i was at the head of the pack doing 70. After about 5 mins everybody obviously got bored and passed me. I will never come on a run driving my own car, maybe be a passenger with someone but i will need to trust them before getting in their car.
RA Dunk Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Next run i could pay AndyF to restrict all our cars electronically and out of 50 cars that turned up about 2 would turn up for next run. exactly!! "most" people go on these type of runs to drive there cars, not to look at horses ####ing in fields and sing songs about bonny mountains of some place i canny bloody spell
RA Dunk Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 When in convoy to the meeting place in perth i was at the head of the pack doing 70. After about 5 mins everybody obviously got bored and passed me. you see those people who passed you? well they would have normally left with the first group on one of grants runs, now can you see the point behind it
scoobyiain Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Quite simple.Put all your lunatics and potential lunatics into thier own groups and keep them away from people who want to go slower. If the lunatics pile in, its thier own fault. Rather than have them in with slower people, and scaring the meek. And what would be said if i called these lunatics "knobs" and started a thread about them?
RA Dunk Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 why would you want to do that though, 95% of people buy these cars to drive them not too look at them and polish them ian, you could have bought a 1.0 corsa and still do what you do now,to the rest of us a 1.0 corsa wouldent cut it
scoobyiain Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Then why would the person who started this thread call someone that and not know the facts? It's pot kettle black in here sometimes. I don't know deeside road if its a 30, 40 or 60 zone so cannot/will not coment on the persons driving but it's ok to let "lunatics" do runs every couple of months on public roads?
philip_wilson Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 It's pot kettle black in here sometimes. In here never
the squiggle Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Then why would the person who started this thread call someone that and not know the facts? It's pot kettle black in here sometimes. I don't know deeside road if its a 30, 40 or 60 zone so cannot/will not coment on the persons driving but it's ok to let "lunatics" do runs every couple of months on public roads? The term "Lunatics" is just a phrase. I know it may imply that the group overtake at 175mph in a 30mph but i can assure you it is just a word. The term "Lunatic", i think the actual term used was "Mentally Unhinged" was dropped and the term "Spirited" was introduced as a more appropriate alternative to the previous name for the lead group
the squiggle Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 So what is a "spirited" drive then? If you dont know the answer to that one, sell the STI for a 1.5 with a STI bodykit Next run we will call the groups 1 2 3 4 This should hopefully save any misinterpretation of a single word or phrase At least when the groups were named you have an idea of what kind of pace you are letting yourself in for. If you want a risk free day then join the "Slow" group or stay at home and miss some great roads, scenery and banter.
irn_bru Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 So what is a "spirited" drive then? Where the mentally un-hinged drive like lunatics????
scoobyiain Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Why would i want to sell my STi? So it's ok for the sidc to go out for some spirited runs but when it's someone else they get called names?
scoobyiain Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Someone on the run has said this Any cutting in was due to people speeding up so you couldn't get back in so in my eyes who's doing the dangerous driving. People overtaking on a straight piece of road or people speeding up so you can't get back in?
