Which Sti ?

Only thinking about it at the moment folks but i was pondering selling my scoob for an STi. The only problem is........which one ? ver 2, ver 3 ver 4 , STi, STi RA, 555 ??

It would need to be in the 4.5-6k-ish bracket for a start . I had thought about an STi RA but I'm not sure how many are around or is it better to try and import one.

So many questions... which has the strongest engine , when did the blue printed engines stop( is it better to find one of these), what ones have dccd. What other things is it worth looking into ?

I'm trying to narrow down my search IF i go through with it and decide to sell mine.

So far I've been looking for info on the sti ra or a 555 ( as my mate at work is selling his)

What do you peeps think ?

cheers.

Thanks Imy. Been looking about that site for a wee while now, just don't know what model to go/look for. Only been thinking about it since my mate offered me his 555 but i don't know what the best model for me would be. I'm not sure if looking for an RA is a better option.... Seems i just missed out on an STi RA after looking at the f/sale section...looked the part aswell..

Thought I'd try on here to see what peoples views were or what they recommended... ah well...

The search continues.

When i thought about getting another scoob i really wanted an Ra but now i have my plain ol STi i'm quite happy as things life air con and leccy windows make it feel at least a bit civilised and unless ur gonna turn it into a track monster does the odd kilo here and there make much odds ?

One thing i would do is spend a bit of time finding the right car with plenty service history and new or uprated bits as once one thing goes it leads to another and starts to get feckin expensive believe me :rotfl:

Although i like my old bus if i were looking it'd be for a facelift, in white of course !

Mostly road work sti,

For a plaything then sti ra.

I've got a v2 sti and it's great, the slightly longer gearing make it easier to live with especially on the motorway and it's still bloody quick. v2 onwards had the 280 ps engine.

Which one is tricky, it's all down to price and condition. A mint v2 is gonna be a better buy than a rough v3 even for the same money.

Good luck, Johnny

I pondered this one a couple of years back and settled on the Version 4 Type RA for my needs.

For me it was always going to be an STi RA model as i wanted the lightweight shell, the dilemma was which version. Knowing i would end up modding the car anyway i chose one that had the right bits that i wasn't planning on swapping straight away. Things like the nice cylinder heads (Version 3/4), DCCD (Version 3 (?) onwards), 2-pot rear brakes (Version 4 onwards), facelift front end (Version 3 onwards) and facelift dash (Version 4 onwards) and are why i chose my V4. I would've happily bought a Version 5 or 6 STi Type RA (especially in limited edition flavour) but there were none around at the time i was looking to buy.

Next year you can import a 1998 V4 STi Type RA without the SVA hassle. All the more reason to buy one! You may even be lucky and find one that was specced with C/L, E/W and/or A/C (mine has the latter).

I don't know if it's still available or not but Jamie Wood (H15OOB) had a lovely late STi Type RA for sale recently.

Thanks for the replys, makes for some interesting reading.

Cheers Carl. You've definately gave me some food for thought. You've managed to answer quite a few of the things I've been looking into, spec.. etc ..

I was thinking about changing cars after the year , maybe importing is something i should look more into.

Contact Chapman81 if your looking to import. He's currently looking for V3 or early V4 STI RA for me. He can get hold of a V2 that his dealer has in stock. Know of a fresh import V3 STI good condition 57K guy rebuilds the bottom end as standard when he imports them £5k but you could get a deal as he is looking for a quick sale.

Afraid Jamie's car is no longer for sale as I bought it....

ready to finish of the project Jamie had started...although..if you were after refinement there is certainly none in this RA.....its well on its way to a raw rally/track car...

good luck in the hunt mate...perhaps you want a shot in mine to help you decide...

I'm happy enough with the car i have at the moment but it's getting used more as a toy lately, hence I've been looking into what's available at what kind of money before i spend any more on mine. You know the score lol

I'll be asking the guy at work for a drive of his STi (555) to see how it compares, next step is to have a wee go in an RA.

Paul, you certainly got a cracker :rotfl:

I'm hardly using mine either at the moment Paul. It's the choice between being happy with the car i've got, wanting more power, justify spending more ££'s on it or starting with a better base model . An STi RA 4/5/6 does sound nice though.

Who knows..... :rotfl:

Just curious buddy. What made you decide on a V3/4 Sti RA ?

Frank get yourself an RA mate you know you want to ....

iff you want we could meet for a cuppa and i will tell you all i know about the RA's . thats all i have been doing for the last 14 months lol. 5k would get you a cracking RA :D ...

just take you time when getting 1 mate there are loads out there advertised as wrx/sti RA and there not ..

weve had 2 members (over on typeRA) that have just about bought cars thinking thay were RAs...

think there 3/4 SIDC members on type-RA so you will feel right at home lol..

just give me a shout as i said .....oh and iff you can i need some spark pluggs :rotfl:

What he says

Carl, the early cars, 1995 do come with DCCD as std.

The RA's built after V2 are overweight kind of RA's, the real ones that you could cage up and batter down a stage Colin stylee were the original Phase 1 cars with their sought after Closed Deck Block. The manic short gearing gives 125mph ish at 7500rpm in fifth and the lightest std Impreza produced gave it the ideal starting point for Grp N rallying.

From Version 3 onwards the were over geared, over weight and over rated and not really worthy of the term RA

Prefer the facelift model, would have gone for a 5/6 if I was going for power, looking for something for track days. After a good discussion with Squiggle our resident expert on all things classic  I opted for a V3. Stewart suggested an early V4 which by the time it comes from Japan won't need SVA'd (although he can sort that out). People are buying more 1997's just now to avoid the SVA so V4's can be be a better price.
