alank Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 (edited) Few folk have suggested I should buy my Cat C Write Off back for Salvage and get it back on the road myself - Only two pics I have are below where you can see most of the damage. What you cant see is the smashed timing belt cover (and whatever else is may be damaged here) and the movement around the suspension stuts inside as there is a 2 mm crack in the dirt both in the wheelarch and around the back of the strut which makes me think the chasis is possibly feked. Now 2 problems 1) I dont know if this could be done to any quality/safety - car may never drive properly again etc etc - would appreciate someone having a proper look at the car who is in the "know" (Currently located at Universal Salavage in Denny) 2 - 99) I dont have a clue/skill/tools etc etc to do this myself so would need someone to do the work for me - this intself will probably be the killer here by the time I pay for parts and their labour. Any suggestions or anyone think they can help? I had been looking at getting an STI Wagon but cant find anything decent and when I did (MY99 v5 rebuilt using a JDM STI 9 crank and rods, mahle pistons and acl bearings etc 4K miles ago) - they guy wanted over 8K for it which I think is a bit much??? RS Grant Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 I think that rebuild STi 5 sounds like great value for money... a rebuild like that wouldnt have been cheap, even if he did it himself rather than using a specialist. Personally, I'd never feel right driving a car that was a CAT C write off.. and I'd probably never drive a CAT D car either, even though it really could have been minor damage being a CAT D. Cheers, Grant
alank Posted October 4, 2007 Author Posted October 4, 2007 The rebuild was 4K Still really fancy it and in theory it should last for ages but seems a hella lot money for and 8 year old car.. That and trying to find an extra 2K plus travel and petrol is somewhat problematic... Anyone wanna buy a kidney?
jas41 Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 As far as safety is concerned, as it has been written off, it would need to go through a full inspection by the dvla to make sure that the repairs have been done properly before it could get put back on the road. The fact that is has been damaged & repaired remains on the car's record and this does reduce its value. It is possible to buy a car that has been written off, do the repairs and make money on the resale, however only if you know what you are doing. If you have to pay for someone else to do if for you, then you will obviously be paying for their time to do this. If the cost of their time plus the parts is more than the end value if the car then it is not worth you doing it. This is the same decision as the insurance company had to make. I am sure that if it is worth doing then someone will buy it and put it back on the road, perhaps making money out of it, but if you don't have the skills....

Suspension damage is often a decider for insurers writing a car off (I work for one of the wonderful companies). Costs can escalate very quickly so be wary
drb5 Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 Yep and what your thinking of doing Alan, will make the car very expensive and seeing as you'll be feeling cheated out of a lot of money already, i think you'll be feeling even WORSE when you come to selling a Cat-C write-off Subaru wagon on.....not an easy job. 8k for the STi wagon is defo too much, but it has had the rebuild....although you'll never know how well done the build was, unless you have the reciepts for the parts bought and know the garage that done the job.
alank Posted October 5, 2007 Author Posted October 5, 2007 Yeah - defo a no no I think. Wondeirng now about how much it is worth to strip my mods off it as looking at a standard STI wagon at Scoobybits which may be up for sale again. Not sure it will be worth it by the time I strip them off then have them refittted to the STI but will see if I even get that wagon. The 8K rebuild wagon is admiting he may have to be more realistic to 7 something - any ideas what I should offer?
drb5 Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 Depends on condition etc obviously, but no more than 7k would be my opinion. You can get the same model year saloons for pretty much that money and they are much easier to sell on.

drb5 Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 I'm still trying to work out what colour it is. I'd offer defo no more than 7k....i think he'd take it. Ad 20k miles onto that and try and sell it for anywhere close to that price.
