emmo Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Peeps I have a minor oil leak on the underside of the left hand bank (as viewed from the driver's seat), but only when the engine is running. It appears to be coming from above the sump return pipe. Any ideas what's up there? I assume it's seeping through a gasket on the head? There is no oil in the water so don't believe it's serious.....yet! If so, can anybody advise what the bolts there need to be torqued up to, and in what order? Any other suggestions where the oil could be coming from? Any advice gratefully received! Martin
Un-ink Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 First point would be the rocker gasket which is the easiest to check and are notorious for leaking. The second point depending on mileage would be the front crankshaft oil seal, this has a habit of spreading the oil to the left bank of the engine when it leaks due to the rotation on the belts when the car is running. The down side to this is you need to remove the cam belt etc to expose the seal and is not as straight forward as the first. With oil leaks it will be worse when the car is running because the oil is much thinner and pressurized and will pass failing seals etc much easier than when cold.
Paulious Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I had the same problem small oil leak on the rocker cover under the turbo. had that done at the local TVR / Subaru garage . then they told me that the front and rear oil seals have a slight leak . and with the slappy number 4 piston .. i opted for a recon lump in the end .. My98 Wagon Turbo 1500 miles ago, mine was in theory a brand new engine as I had forged pistons, rods, etc so I can't believe a seal has gone already ....
