johns Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 It was great having all the MLR members and their cars along for the day [] It would indeed be good to run some more joint events in the future. We'll need to get together over the coming months to come up with some ideas ? John

scouk Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Slightly off topic (ish) Was speaking to Cullenmin at the event regarding meets up the highland area and we both seemed excited about the vague idea of holding an alford/track style event up our way. Basically there are plenty abandoned airfields aroung Elgin which could be used if we can line out a track with cones/ bails e.t.c. Yeah I know sounds like a lot of work. Any of the guys who do the sprints will no doubt remember the events that took place at Milton Airfield just outside Lossiemouth. The local 63CarClub used to use the airfield quite a lot. However last year it was rumoured the land was being solf off by the MOD. No idea what happened there but I beleive the area is still usable (No idea who to contact). http://www.multimap.com/maps/#t=l&map=...,-3.22902|15|32Basically wide open space to mark out our own track, LOTS of space for runoffs (think topgear test track []) , central for north Scotland (bit far for others). Interestingly the area is marginally bigger than knockhill! And it's just 2 miles from my house [] However same problems would occur, lack of volunteers to help out organise things, We'd all need to pitch in and help somehow.. If this is something which interests people, I could maybe start making enquiries about how to get access to the airfield for a day for an event... Joint events do seem like a good idea!! Also after seeing how the SIDC run events like this for the first time (well organised IMHO) I will probably help out a bit next time if required []
reidzer44 Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 is that the airfield on the right as you go along the short cut road bypassing elgin , great road for the scooby that .. i think they just use that for communication masts now and is closed off .. , would be a great place for track or 1/4 mile runs . hope you have some luck finding out ., its about time we had a track of some sort up in the north as it would atract loads of motorsport enthusiasts and would save having to make the long runs to crail and knockers . just look how many people attend the granite and speyside rallys..[H]
dearsman Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Sounds like a great idea John, just say the word and we can all thrash out some ideas..

That road was a bit slippy the other day though [] I HAVE A DREAM!! Well sort off. I've always said for years that If I ended up with access to load of money I'd buy that land and build a proper racing circuit to give Scotland it's second national circuit! And even better something for us drivers in northern scotland to play on as knockhill is a fair trip away [] Might also help stop younger drivers making fools of themselves on the local roads here by giving them a safe area to play... I know a guy who held a small event there a couple of weeks ago in order to raise money for Raigmore Hospital in inverness. Bit of a car fun day with show n' shine stuff. I'll get in touch with him and see how he organised it and find out what it would take to hold a good event there with access to the airfield.

ali37 Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Been on that airfield a good few times. That is where I did some of my HGV training a good few years ago - not sure if the still use it now. Was with the HGV training place in Elgin. Would make a superb place for an event. [Y]
spooks Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Just a quickie to echo what everyone has previously said. Well done to John for organising a great day out, no matter how much rain fell it did not dampen our spirits at all. Apart from the few incidents the track was great to watch, feel bad I never gave a hand in marshalling or timekeeping......next year [] Got a few pics to post but will do that tomoz me thinks, or can perhaps do a report for True Grip . Again Top marks John [y] Spooks

Would they also have proper timing gear, etc for 1/4 mile stuff as well?
sandyRS16i Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 great idea, i was at an event there (or a similar airfield around Elgin) a few wks back, run by Moray Dub Club and saw a lot of potential for getting something sorted out in terms of a trackday due to the size and amount of available space. One issue perhaps would be the liability and insurance side, although that may be overcome by having it as a closed event? hopefully you are sucessful with any enquires as these places have as much to offer as Crail does if it could be organised
ryancat-85 Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 AL, hi jacking a thread, tisk tisk [] Great idea though. I remember a few years back a couple of boys from work used to go down there at night, said they were getting crazy speeds down the main runway ! Kev maclennan does the skid car down there might be worth while phoning him [Y]

One issue perhaps would be the liability and insurance side, although that may be overcome by having it as a closed event? Yeah that was the doo a few weeks back I was thinking about. Used to work with Ronnie Ross who organised that V-Dub Club event so will give him a shout, chances are they'll come along to such an event too. Liability and insurance, I guess along as there was some disclosure saying the organisers are not responsible for any personal damage e.t.c. Interestingly how was this dealt with for the Alford event? Were the drivers informed of their responsibility if it all went pear shaped? AL, hi jacking a thread, tisk tisk [] Great idea though. I remember a few years back a couple of boys from work used to go down there at night, said they were getting crazy speeds down the main runway ! Kev maclennan does the skid car down there might be worth while phoning him [Y] I know I know.. shame on me.[:$] But the idea is still riding on the successful wave of the Alford event. Hope no one minds.[A] Good point about the skid car, could even get them roped into showing off their stuff and letting people have a go at discounted price(s) Hmnn... This could quite easily grow into a large event.. Need to decide when to stop.. I've also been asked by my local Advanced Motorists group to become their point of contact for Young Drivers, so maybe see if the IAM group wants to make an appearance at the event too.. Plenty of potential drivers looking to enhance their on-road driving skills. Go along and have a chat and see what the IAM is all about. Although they may not be the local group for you, each group follows the same training methods.. I'll hold off contacting the 63carcub until next week as they'll be far too busy with the Speyside-Stages Rally this week..
iainc Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 I'll hold off contacting the 63carcub until next week as they'll be far too busy with the Speyside-Stages Rally this week.. Actually it might be worth a quick call to see if there is someone you can speak to at the event itself (after the event probably)? At least that way you may be able to speak to a number of guys at the same time than a call to one, who has to call another and another, etc. Iain.
