TheCrow Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 Had a bit of a scare, driving along into work, braking into juntion which turns down a huge hill (Constitution Road for the people that knwo Dundee) but im not slowing down...pedal hits the floor, cars still going!!! a quick handbrake stop later i was able to stop the car before i hit anything or started going down the hill. Eventualy got it into AWD after a total 2day screw up by RAC. and my brake pipes have corroded through, the one above the petrol tank so looks like ill be with out my car for a few days. But on the bright side i still have a car and it didnt fail on me at a much worse time! Lucky boy me
marky.t.s Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 that must have been a "brown pants"moment ,at least you got it under control, lucky there mate.
billyboy Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 Close shave mate. Its amazing how many people never check the condition of metal brake pipes then they get a big bill come mot time or its reported at a service.
euan_r Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 nasty mate, dont be too worried my local garage was very resonable for replacement pipes all over and remot after failing due to them £100 all in.
thefastone Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 gutted.... such a simple thing to check, yet so critcal.... how olds yer motor mate? I hope youve not had it serviced very recently, as I would be straight down the garage shouting the odds.... you should be able to spot corroded brake lines long before they should ever get to that point wherer your breaks fail... [^o)]
euan_r Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 the ones above rear tank are hard to spot. quite a bitch to replace as well if you dont reroute them.
david_taylor Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 Know how you feel mate. I had complete brake failure about 12 years ago on my 1st car(Nova). Was approaching a roundabout and like yours pedal went straight to the floor. There was a car on the roundabout, and I had a broken hand brake cable at the time. Feck I thought, what am I going to do, at which point I just slammed it into first to try to engine brake a bit as I swerved round the car and rolled to a stop. Turned out both of the caliper pistons had seized on and roasted the brake fluid. Like the rest say, at least you and the car are okay. Dave
TheCrow Posted July 11, 2007 Author Posted July 11, 2007 It hadnt had a full service but it had been looked over before. Ye it was the pipes above the petrol tank, so will be a bit more than you £100 just for labour time. Its a MY98 UK tubby wagon, guess there is nothing that you can do to help stuff like this? just try and catch it before it fails on you?
