Power at the wheels is lower than at the flywheel as you have all the transmission losses incurred. 164 is probably not too far off standard then.

ava has always done thier figures by wheels instead of flywheel. My rs turbo was done there and got 136 at wheels and was told add approx 25-30 for fly

Posted

164 still seems low for a standard turbo

One run I did last year was 233bhp at the fly and 193 at the wheels so thats a loss of 40bhp through the transmission.

Standard 215 at the fly minus 40bhp losses would be 175 bhp at the wheels.

All cars are different though, plus all rolling roads are different and the ambient temperature and so on and so on

Brings back memories..... Back in '88 i had a 1.6 RS Turbo which gave 160bhp at the wheels. At the time the Power Engineering 2.0 conversions were giving the same output. [;)]

Haha, RS Turbo's and AVA... Brings back memories for me too!! I had a 1992 J-Plate Series 2 that made 163bhp@wheels there!! [;)]

Power output sounds about spot on for a standard 8yr old car to be honest.

Back in 88, did you buy new?

It was 2 years old by then.

160 at the wheels made for a quick car (back then, not now!! lol), but it was a pain in the butt due to torque steer. It made me move on to the Cosworths.

So much more relaxed.... ahhh..

I thought all RST's stopped production in 1990, only Fiesta's were made after this or am I wrong?

There will be a queue of scooby owners breaking down AVA's door before the end of the year.

Have to agree AVA are a pile of pish.

They told me my evo was detting, when it wasnt, idiots, the car was mapped and set up by one of the best evo mappers in the country.

Why would they lie to you?

The people that work at AVa are so far away from idiots thats its not funny.

who is this best evo mapper in the country?

Just because it has been mapped by them, does this mean that a fault cant occur on the car that leads to det?

I'm going to agree with rapidcossie here.

Since when did AVA ever say they knew about tuning Subaru's!

They have a rolling road. That's it. They specialise in Fords. So what? They've done this for years.

I think this might stem from way back when a rolling road day was organised years ago and their equipment went tits up. Yes, people came from far and wide (very far and wide) and were left in the dark hanging around waiting to see what was going to happen, but they did try to repair the RR. Where it all went pete tong was that everyone was cold and weren't kept informed i what was happening, so all left disgruntled. All that attended were offered a free run when the equipment was repaired but did they take them up on the offer? No, it felt better in the comfort of an armchair to slag them off.

Bear in mind at that time there were few rolling roads to go to or were aware of.

Am i biased towards them? No. Have i used their rolling road for my old scoob? No. Why not? Cause i found them to be expensive for a rolling road run, simple as that. It was better to participate in an organised rolling road day out where it was cheaper to get a run plus meet up with like minded individuals.

Was i happy with their service/knowledge when i had my Fords? Yes. Did i find they were sometimes awkward to talk to? Yes, but once tuned in to how they operate a good relationship was established. This was 20 years ago mind you. I don't know what they are like now.

They built and mapped my cossie which runs 185 GPS timed at woodbridge and is one of the fastest road cars in scotland.

It has ran pretty faultlessly for 2 years and 10k miles so cant be that bad.

Production did stop in 1990/91 and my car was one of the last batch, but it was 1 of 8 that was late registered mate.. very very rare machine. The K-plate one from up north is a fake, lol, was an E or F plate then taken out the country for a few years.. When it was brought back, the DVLA registered it as a K-plate. Mine was one of the last RS Turbo's registered in the UK genuinely. Regret selling that car, lots. [;)]

I had absolutely no problems with AVA in my RS Turbo days, can well relate to the communication angle too, just gotta get used to it... I actually made more power after AVA set the car up at 13psi than I did running the car at 18psi after RJM in Glenrothes fitted the Turbosystems Chip and apparently 'set the car up' too.

well guys if they are so great why did he tell me not to upgrade my air filter just bang on a big exhaust and a front intercooler and that would up my bhp to 270 withoput a remap i waited for half an hour past my appointment and the place looks like steptoes yard their computer systems are still running windows 98 i have learned from my lesson especially at 75 quid a time i only done it because i needed the car checked before a track day anyway dastek from now on cheers scoobzie

Couldn't say why they recommended that... did you not mention to them that you've been recommended a re-map and free flowing air filter as key upgrades when making bigger power on an Impreza because they have a tendency to run lean and melt stuff if you do without? It'd have been interesting to hear their reply and give them a chance to explain their point of view.

I've never seen them touting themselves as Impreza Specialists, but from personal experience on the Ford RS side... I would trust nobody else with my car and it was a 140mile+ round trip every time I went there. I'd think carefully before potentially jumping from the frying pan into the fire, there are bad stories about Dastek as well. [;)]

I would imagine that they have said what they said because the exhaust is restrictive (most std systems are to an extent) and a front mount will maintain lower air temps. An air filter change isn't required until a certain power output has been achieved. I'll say it again though, they are not Subaru specialists and don't advocate being Subaru specialists.

I'm not saying their great, i'm relaying my experience with them from over 20 years ago! I have never used them since for anything. £75 is expensive for a RR run imo.

Agree about the steptoes yard. It's always been like that and doesn't instil any confidence to a potential customer.
