The SVA test is <102dB at 1m, with the engine at 3750rpm. MOT test is something like it has to be no louder than "standard". nice and vague. Si.

As I understand it, at some point about 92 I think they brought in a requirement to have a cat, no matter what the emissions were like. This really screwed over cars like the lean burn honda engines. They slightly solved it by having a fairly useless/cheap cat, as they already met the emissions limits. The requirement may just be that they must come new fitted with cat, and you can remove it, but I don't know the details. Would also think that imports may require cat for sva but after that its just emissions based testing. I doubt you'd ever be nicked for not having a cat. Si.

Hey, it could be a lot worse..... I had the local polis turn up on my doorstep at 2am!!! to tell me off for haring about town earlier that evening..... the car hadn't moved for a week! and I was obviously very drunk, having only just got in from a serious session in the local. Not quite sure what they were thinking turning up at that time of day, with no proof that it was my car, just that mine was the only one of its kind and colour in Edinburgh. I mean nobody ever visits Edinburgh for an evening, now do they?!?!? And why did they not question how I could be that drunk and consider that I'd been the one driving. Guess that some of these guys just like picking on fancy cars for kicks. Si.

<< you sure youve not got a V8 under that bonnet? >> Oi! V8's are efficient.... I get over 25mpg out of my gaz guzzling yank tank! Si.

Its not so much the car, as just being passed by anyone that seems to annoy these losers. I used to have great difficulty (mainly with bmws...) in my old 1.1 fiesta as I didn't have the power to overtake comfortably them without a run up through the bends. All it usually takes to lose these guys is a couple of descent bends. Quite scary when someone doesn't want you to pass but can't drive round bends, and is prepared to put their family's lives at risk by overdriving. These days they are much quicker to admit defeat, and just let me disappear! Si.

Worth checking the wires to the abs sensors. They may have bashed the wires when adjusting the steering etc. Si.

These are the folks I used : http://sandblastuk.com/ Unit 19a, Newbattle Abbey Business Park, Newbattle Road, Eskbank, Midlothian. Tel: 0131 660 4444 It was something like 155 quid for 4 16"x8" alloys including taking the tyres off, and refitting and balancing. Si. ps. Watch out for the speedbumps on the road into their place as they are vicious!

Its been a long time since Motorail ceased to opperate from edinburgh. I'm thinking something like 20+ years ago! Guess not enough people used it. Si.

Gerry, Sorry if my comments about your setup sounded harsh, didn't mean to be that critical. The setup in general is great, with impressive grip on the rollers. The cooling side of things is more to do with the odd type of car that I have, and a little more experimentation would solve how to run it more effectively. I don't claim to have a normal car.... I would be interested in more details about the speed control loop, and am willing to help in solving the problem. As to the actual cause of the problem with my car, I would put a fair amount of money on the fault being that my alternator and wiring is not up to much, and when you tried to calibrate the system it could not properly detect the current pulses from the alternator as the load you applied (lights and fan) were probably taken mainly from the battery. To overcome this problem, using a lighter load would probably fix the issue (ie. no lights/fan). Also the fan load probably caused too much inductive interferance. You do need some load to help supress the noise coupled into the system from the ignition, but too much will swamp the alternator pulses. An alternative fix would be to have moved the point you connected to the system over to the alternator rather than at the battery terminals. This is tricy on most cars though. Anyhew let me know if you would like any assistance in testing any fix/work around. And once again, my appologies if my previous comments were too harsh. Si.

<< How many ponies is the i-rocis pushing out do you think mate?????????? >> I reckon that it should be in the 200-250 range. Its engine was made up from an 1979 5.7litre that was 190bhp, and a 1985 5.0litre engine also 190bhp. All the best bits of both have been combined along with a new intake, better carb, headers. All in all nothing to up the power much, just less restrictive bits. I'll leave any real performance mods until I've learnt how to handle what its got at the moment..... Si.

Thanks to Jason for organising a good day out! Well up until they put my car on the rollers.... Can't say I was all that impressed with their system and the fact that it couldn't cope with the electrics in my car. Suspect that the way they do the rpm measurement is prone to error, which would screw their power figures. Could be interesting if they want my help in fixing their kit, but I doubt they'll bother. Anyhew, it was still good to see all those other cars run, and meet folks. Si.

I heard a rumour that they also need the cars to have both front a rear tow hooks. Is this true? Si.

Scotrad, in Edinburgh is supposed to be the place up here to go for these smaller specialised plates. Not got my one made up yet, so don't know how good they are. http://www.scotrad.co.uk/ Si.

sandblastuk.com out at dalkeith does a good job. It cost something like 155quid for 4 wheels (16"x8") to be bead blasted, powdercoated, including removing the tyres, refitting and balancing. Very good job they do. Watch out for the speed bumps getting into new abbey college industrial estate though! Si.
