About Gerd

  1. Working this time round but hopefully make the next one, have fun.
  2. Has your car had a remap at any point? Has this issue occured after fitting of any of the mods or has it just started all of a sudden?
  3. Agree with the above, a pain in the rear but you won't have to worry about it if you do it right first time by taking the cover off and replacing all the gaskets. I got my rocker gaskets from Import Car Parts, was about 50 quid per side (this included the main gasket, coil pack gaskets and bolt washers. Most importantly they supply genuine Subaru gaskets and resolved an issue I had with incorrect gaskets very quickly without any fuss (engine change at some point so different head to what should have been in there) It's not a tricky job, given the work you seem to have carried out so far. Just go steady when doing the shoulder bolts back up, it's quite easy to strip these in the ally block. There are a few 'how to' via a google search. I didn't replace the bolts. The half moons should be solid so maybe it coming out with only a small knock might have ment it need attention anyways. Good luck.
  4. Been driving the Scooby for a month now and finally saw another Impreza today. Tidy looking classic in silver on a V plate driving south down the A10 just outside Buntingford. You waved, I was in my own little world and managed half a nod before seeing you drive past:)
  5. As far as I'm aware there is legislation that HID's require auto leveling as well as headlight washers regardless of them being original equipment or retro fit. A Google search throws up all sorts of info about it. In reality I doubt this is ever really checked by MOT testers/VOSA or the Police. Most retro fit HID's I've seen don't cause any issues, especially if you have projectors, but there are always a few motors where the no doubt cheap ebay badly fitted HID's blind you from 5 miles away.
  6. I once told a girlfriend I'd rather be out cleaning my car than stuck in the house with her...we aren't together anymore, it didn't work out. I think once a week is perfectly normal.
  7. People don't hang around because they have no concept of social responsibility or basic respect for other peoples belonging. I hope you get it sorted quickly at a fair price. I came back to my Landrover Defender (proper off-road thing covered in dents and marks) one day also in Tesco's to find some lady using the bonnet as a place to rest her shopping bags while she loaded her boot. When challenged she stated 'It doesn't matter does it? This is a proper heap of scrap!' In reality it didn't really matter as no damaged was caused but it was the principle that she couldn't understand.
  8. Yep it has 4CAM 16VALVE on the cover. As far as I can tell from various pictures on the net and the V4 kit I was sent compared to my actually gaskets there are 3 different types up to V4 (not sure about V5/6) V1/2 has a diagonal corner on the main gasket and the plug gaskets have little 'horns' on them. V3 seems to have the same main gasket as V1/2 but the plug gaskets look like melted circles. V4 have a different main gasket without the diagonal corner and the same plug gaskets as V3. Well they look like horns to me:) Diagonal corner is the biggest difference. Also the breather gasket is almost the same but the V4 has 2 small half circles on the back edge Rocker front, diagonal corner should give it away as the V4 does not seem to have this.
  9. Evening all, I'm wondering if any SIDC members have owned or remember my Impreza I brought a few weeks back. I reckon someone on here possible used to own it? Main reason for asking is I tried to change the drivers side rocker cover gasket today, apart from the fact I reckon the last person to do this job used a 4 inch paint brush to apply the gasket silicon I only really ran into one problem, albeit a big one. I thought I would need a V4 kit and this was confirmed by the supplier from the numbers under the bonnet. As it turns out I need a V1/2 kit so I'm looking to find any old owners to see if they can confirm if the heads have been changed. There is nothing in the limited history or from the last owner. Reg is - S190 AEC Cheers

  11. No preferences regarding dates as my shifts in May are as yet unconfirmed. Work permitting I'll definitely pop along. Cheers Ged
  12. Thanks for the welcome. I got the turbo induction pipe replaced and the inlet manifold back on but it hasn't fixed the problem. I've been reading about 'fuel cut' and think it might be this. 1st gear is all good boosts up to about 0.8 which holds. The other gears will boost but only if you feather the accelerator. If you floor it the boost rises quickly past 1.0 and onwards which causes the car to loose power quite violently. Car has de-cat, induction kit, prodrive exhaust, dump valve and boost gauge as far as I'm aware. I filled it up with higher octane fuel on the drive home (partly because thats all the petrol station had a few weeks back) before the rad hose blew could this affect the running if it's used to running on standard UK fuel. It is a UK turbo. I will try an ECU reset and cleaning out the 2 port boost solenoid. Any other suggestions? Also the removal of the inlet manifold has highlighted an oil leak on the drivers side rocker cover which is going on the exhaust. Has anyone used http://www.importcarparts.co.uk for parts/gaskets and recommend? Cheers in advance.
  13. Cheers guys, Currently living in the Herts area just north of London. Hopefully if I can learn my way round the layout now on something I'm not to precious about I can keep the bills down to parts only in the future. First thing is sort out this boost issue then I might attempt a timing belt. ...I think I remember how it goes back together
  14. Hi Finally decided to buy my first Impreza after wanting one for as long as I can remember. Despite everyone’s advice about staying away from 1500 quid high mileage eBay specials I couldn't help myself. So I'm now the new owner of a 1998 UK Impreza with a few mods. The most important of which is a SIDC sticker in the rear window which I only noticed today so thought I would head over and say hello. After a good shake down on the driver home (it was running well) the top rad hose split, having no tools to hand the AA arrived, a part was sourced locally and I was back on the road. However the car wouldn't seem to hold boost after that with the gauge shooting up to 1.5 bar under heavy acceleration and then the car shuddering. I have since found a screwdriver sized hole in the turbo intake pipe. I have taken the inlet manifold off (oh what fun) to replace it with an OE hard pipe rather than a silicon job. I don't plan to run big power and wanted to learn my way round the engine bay a bit so seemed like a better and cheaper option. Just waiting for the part to arrive and hopefully it’s a cheap fix. If not I've got a few other things to try which I've read might be causing the issue. Either way I'm quite enjoying getting my hands dirty again. Quick pic of the old bus in the default 'ebay bargain' setting......cup of tea under the bonnet adds about 30bhp for the record!
