  1. hi guys and girls, just got back into sccoby ownership by pure 'chance', i sold my sti type r about 18months ago and really have regreted it ever since, it was a minter with less then 30k on the clock :(

anyway, recently the wife was looking for a cheap mk3 golf, and while searching ebay i came across a turbo 2000 for very little money, long story/argument cut short, she got her golf, and i got another impreza, now i know coming from an sti type r that the uk car wont feel as raw, but in the past ive had a few wrx's and as few sti's, all classics, but the uk turbo 2000 felt so flat.

anyway after soem investigation i discovered that the turbo to intercooler hose had gone very hard and was not sealing properly on the intercooler side, a new pipe cured alot of problems but its still so slow comapred to what i remember, im not slating the uk classix here, i suppose i was expecting more thats all. it also became apparent that the car wasnt that loved by the previous owner, it desperatly needed plugs, and a fulll service, semmes to be runnign properly since

    The car is a my1999 turbo 2000

it is standard appart from a cone filter, bailey dump valve, and sti backbox. all on the car when bought.

is the ecu on this year remmapable?

what would be the best way to go about realeasing a few more horses to play with on the lanes here in west wales??

none of this detracts from the grin ive now got on my face again, even if underpowered a bit it still grips like an impreza and im happy to see the other owners still do the 'wave' :):driving::icon_fU:

    thanks

    tim

  2. Hi

I dont know if you can remove an abs system from an newage, you can on a classic

As for mot, its the same as most things, if the system or any part of the system is there, then it is testable and therefore failable.

The way mot testers test the abs system is wholy dependant on the dash warning light.

    l

if that goes on and goes off when u start car then its all ok/

i had an abs classic, which was usless on the back lanes round here, many of which have a layer of loose chippings or farm muck on them, get a abs car on those surfaces and it just doesnt want to brake. even worse on gravel pedal goes hard and does nothing.

if you remove the entire abs system ( abs rings, sensors, leads, abs pump and warning light) then you wont fail an mot (back to the if its no tthere you cant fail on it)(ie i had a broken aftermarket foglight an a mk2 escort, failed cos it wasnt working, tester said go round courner, pull it off and come back, if there isnt one there it cant be broken). im gussing all years of impreza are availble for purchase without abs. like the type ra, sti type r's and newer cars bought for rallying, wouldnt come with abs it really is useless on loose surfaces and a good driver will always be able to measure his brakes better than a car with abs.

none of the above acounts for the 'oh ****' braking moments, i mean when someone opens a door in your path, pulls out from a blind junction or worse still a kid runs out between parked cars, on wet day, when your sneezing/changing the radio/lighting a fag/ arguing with the misses and you see it at the last second, 99% people will just push the brake pedal through the floor. this is where abs counts.

so i dont really know what my point is, i guess, if you live in the middle of the country side, and are confident in your ability. go for it, you'll have more fun.

if you do alot of town driving, or and confident you can remove and replace bits of the braking system yourself then dont .

  3. have you tried getting someone to sit in rear passenger seat behind driver and do a 0-60 test?

i know it sounds daft but you can get used to the acceleration and your body works out how to adjust to you putting your foot down just putting some un suspecting idot ahhem sorry person in the passenger seat and watching their head fly forwards and backwards as you change gears usualy lets you know if theirs a prob or you have just got used the car

i got 220K miles out of mny old classic and that never lost power it just had a few faults now and agian but i religiously serviced it and it was still going strong when i sold it just the old perishables like coilpacks, Sensors etc that went on mine

This is definatly a good idea. i thought the same about the type r after about 6 months. then used a 306 dturbo for a fortnight and when i jumped back in the type r it was like oh jesus its still fine haha

or get someone else to drive it with u in the passeneger seat, that is the worst thing ive ever done, god it seems to pull so much harder when your not in charge

    tim

  4. yh am sorry

dont be!! i was only having a giggle

welcome and hope u sort it.

the speedo cable is on the side of the gearbox, it just pushes in, on my old wrx it worked loose a few time somehow. caused cel and fuel cut.

  5. drive about the spedo stop working can any 1 tell me under the engine on a classic wrx 1995 were it would be the cable

to the offside of the gearbox is the speado cable a i guess want myabe find to in plug?????

are you not from the uk? youre post seemed very eurospeak

  6. after reading through this again in the cold light of day. im now convinced that the1 is just someone with a grudge or a big chip on their shoulder.

he/she shown no proof that they do indeed work for a 'specailist'

    nor i doubt he/she ever will/

anyway, can i say again thanks to bigd, and the others like him who are prepared to offer their help and support to other members in the sidc for little or often no reward. I hope we get many more members like you. and many less like the1.

  7. you keep thinking that iain i'll sleep alright at night knowing i'm not putting hardworking souls with families out of a job and on to the street because i thought i was helping.

Jesus you don’t give up do you? I can see why this gets to bigd and others

Dealers are a rip off. most of them are useless, unhelpful and rude. I’m not surprised you used to work for one. you would fit right in

You say you work for a tuner now? By your attitude im guessing its ripspeed in halfords, please don't correct this if im wrong, because by doing so you will turn your complete argument on its head, and you will put the poor company out of business overnight.

  8. ahem "The idea behind it is that two individuals who have been liberally daubed or painted with the same tar brush"

    i don't work in a dealership but i used to i now work for a tuner/specialist

like i said where i'm from we say painted, another thing you just can't understand iain that you are not right all the time and neither is the internet!

I work for myself, in fact I employ 5 people, if one of them had an attitude like you they wouldn't last 5 minutes

and another thing you just cant understand. your wrong, all the time.

You have no tact and even less civility.

  9. ahem "The idea behind it is that two individuals who have been liberally daubed or painted with the same tar brush"

    i don't work in a dealership but i used to i now work for a tuner/specialist

    Ahem The idea behind it

Yes? explaining they have been covered in tar. like you might paint a roof with tar. with a brush

Doesnt change the fact that the saying is tarred with the same brush.

Doesnt change the fact that your a childish idiot with nothing better to than argue. Infact it almost highlights it.

  10. depends what part of the country you are from, where i am from they say paint so there!!

    "tarred with the same brush

Fig. sharing the same characteristic(s); having the same good or bad points as someone else. Jack and his brother are tarred with the same brush. They're both crooks. The Smith children are tarred with the same brush. They're all lazy.

    See also: brush, same"

The origin is the verb to tar, meaning to defile or dirty, known from the early years of the seventeenth century. The idiom appears in print first in 1818, in one of Sir Walter Scott’s novels, Rob Roy: “They are a’ tarr’d wi’ the same stick — rank Jacobites and Papists.” Our modern form appears in William Cobbett’s Rural Rides in 1823: “‘You are all tarred with the same brush’, said the sensible people of Maidstone.”

The idea behind it is that two individuals who have been liberally daubed or painted with the same tar brush look much the same and so appear to have the same characteristics. The links of the colour black with matters that were detestable, dishonourable or evil also added to the negative sense.

It doesnt depend where your from. it depends on if your right or wrong.

Once again 'the1' you are wrong

  11. Cheers Chris,appreciate the help..

Ya im afraid there are f** all petrol stations that sell 99 or 100RON,maybe 1 or 2 in Dublin and a few in the North, but im living in the South and there are no places that i know of..

So you think i can keep the standard ecu and put Octane Booster with every fill of the 95RON???

Or buy a new and uprated ecu??

The car is standard so id imagine that its the factory ecu thats still in it..

    yo

Either use millers cvl turbo booster or the other from halfords (i think its nos octaince booster) used either of those in my type r with no probs but thats on 97 ron when i cant get vpower. get yourself a knock link for piece of mind

  12. so your another one then that paints all dealers with the same brush not surprised just seen your age! when you have grown some big boy hair then you can start with the insults now go and sit in the naughty boy corner!!!

so because im 27 i dont know sod all about mechanics or how to work on a car??

I run my own business, and still have time to fix my own car and friends cars too.

Ive been working on car since i was 12/13 thats 15 years experience, last time i saw inside a dealers workshop most of the fitters were 17-20. and they all breathed through their mouths

I had a c.e.l problem a while back and bigd pointed me on the right track. sorted for no cost at all. main dealer said it wold be at least £150 to have the car in to find out what was wrong.

Its not tarring (its tarring someone with the same brush not painting them btw) all the dealers i have dealt with have been as bad.. be they subaru, vauxhall, renault or ford...............

  13. The sidc is a good club and has this brilliant forum.

People like bigd offer helpfull advice. Its helpfull, polite and informed people like him that make this place a cut above the rest.

As ive said i wouldnt trust a main dealer as far as i could throw them. ill elaborate on this tomorrow when im not heading for bed.

'the1' whats YOUR problem. were you dropped on your head? or were you bullied in school? something has made you so obtuse and obnocxious. But i really dont think this is the thread or even the forum for you.

  14. good for you then any idiot can change a clutch it's not hard especially on a subaru

or any other job. there is reason ever to go to a main dealer. unless your car is under warrantee.

and if people have an issue they are struggling with why can someone with some knoledge help out????

I really dont think this club needs people like you

  15. so you do a job on a car and something goes wrong and the car has an accident killing the family i take it your insured to cover this?

I dont want to sound big headed, but when i do a job on a car it doesnt go wrong. if i was not confident in myself to do a jod id take the car to my local independant garage. ( main dealer wanted £800+ for a clutch change. I did it for £150(that a excedy clutch trade from a motor factor and my own skinned knuckles)) and £20 plus many rounds of tea made and the local garage. (for the use of a ramp for a few hours)

people have fixed cars for years, thats partly why motor factors exist, people who blidnly go to the main dealer need their heads read

  16. hi there fella, on the real wheel bearing, unless you have a hydraulic press I wouldn’t attempt it, I’ve done them and if they decide to be tricky its taken over ten tons of pressure to get it out. I would recommend stripping the hub off yourself (just nuts and bolts) and then taking the hub to a local garage (not a dealer) and getting them to press the bearing out and fit the new one.

last time I did it the bearing cost around £60 and the garage charged £10 for doing it as they only have to press in/press out.

I recommend everyone finds a local garage and make friends, go round, make tea, share a few jokes and then nine time out of ten they'll do jobs like this for beer money. (or a clutch change for under £200 including the parts :brickwall::thumbup: )

  17. yes ,were you there

no i missed it cos of work, but i had this exact incided described to me this morning by a mate that was there... now normaly you have to take what he says with a pinch of salt ('ive got a k&n as big as your house e) ('my car will do a ton round that bend, even in the wet), but seeing the video as only confirmed what he said!

where abouts u from then mike?
