Space saver tyres

Hi Chaps,

Some advice please....

I have 19" Tyres and have been looking into what options there are on space saver tyres in the event i am driving to Scotland or something and a puncture happen.  Anyone know anything about space saver tyres?  Can you get 19"? I am thinking along the lines of getting a puncture and sorting something just to get me home.  Could i use a 17" wheel or would it totally fook my car up?

Although you have 19" Wheels the tyres are thinner and therefore the total circumferance [sp?] is the same

Haing said that I compared my spacesaver with my standard wrx 17" wheels and there was about 1" difference in height, so circumference is pretty different. I was going to post up a different thread about this, but as this is here[:)].

I take it what you mean is you compensate the extra inches from the alloy with the lower profile tyre.

When you go up an alloy size, or two!!!, you put lower profile tyres on so the overall diameter, and therefore circumference stays the same.

I have 45 profile tyres on 17's with a width of 215, I assume yours are 35? or less (total guess)

To get the overall diameter:

The profile figure is the tyre wall height as a percentage of the width, so in my case my tyre wall = 215 x (45/100), then for the diameter, double that (to get the tyre wall top and bottom) and add the wheel diameter, converted to mm, so 17x25.4

Giving a diameter of 2x(215 x 0.45) + (17 x 25.4), in mm.

Carry out the calculation on your wheels, and again on the spare and see what you get. I haven't done it for mine but I can see that my spare is miles out!!! Be interested to see what you get

Oh... just found a note of my tyres from when i got them... they are

As your going all the way up to Scotland you could always stick a set of standard wheels and tyres on as they will give you a more comfortable ride as the walls of the tyres are a deeper profile and softer, thereby giving a softer ride. If your going up the east coast you MUST go over the Borders on the A68 great drive.[;)][H][6]

235/35/19.....

2x(235x0.35) + (19x25.4)

164.5 + 482.6 = 647.1 diameter

Circumference = 647.1 x 3.142 = 2033.19 (I think!![:S])

Lost me ages ago..........is this the distance he's planning to cover on his journey to Scotland?

I drove for 3 weeks on my space saving spare and that was a smaller circumference... no problems.. (drifted really well tho !)

Drove for a year with smaller rear tyres and no probs...

And the gearbox issues were due to me donut... abusing the car [*-)]

Right.. was wondering myself so rang Subaru dealer..

First off was told I should have 16" wheels on to match the space saver(????) but once I had explained the car was a 53 plate wrx with ORIGINAL 17" wheels on it, confirmed it was a UK car etc he came to the conclusion that Subaru Japan wouldn't put anything in the car that would be TOO detrimental and I should check my handbook!!!! Otherwise if I have to use it then do so, but keep it on the car for as shorter time as possible ie go straight to a tyre place lol, or just get myself off the motorway etc!!!

Unfortunately your wheel tyre combo looks to have a slightly bigger diameter to standard, despite best efforts to keep it the same (sometimes it can't be helped) so in your case I would say your example is a bit extreme!! You may be fooked. Are the spacesavers in the wrx and sti the same size?

Diameter of my wheels is roughly 620mm, whereas yours are 647mm, about an inch different in old money. Try speaking to a dealer or asking a pro as I don't now how much leeway you get. Afterall, Subaru website recommend 18's for my car with 225/40 profile tyres, again a different diameter......

Wheels look great tho[H][Y]

Easy way to solve this is get 4 space savers [:D]

not a bad idea - less wear and tear on the road, more fuel efficient as you got to go slower..........[:)]
