cupradave Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 Evening all As some of you are aware I have been excavating my garden lately, I am glad to say all the digging has now pretty much been completed. I am now getting to the point of calling in the concrete delivery man, I was hoping some of you would be available to lend me a hand next saturday (the 12th) I am looking for around an extra 6 pairs of hands to help lay the concrete. The delivery fella said we have only half an hour to get the concrete off the mixer lorry (or they start charging me a fortune), so the more hands the better really as the concrete would go off within the hour meaning we would have to work quite fast. Am not sure yet wether we are going to go for one or two pours (spose it really depends on how many of you can help), it is a rather large area so might have to go for two anyway. Would ask him to come out with the first pour maybe about 9ish saturday morning then come back maybe 2 hours later with the second, meaning we would hopefully be all done and dusted by lunch time. Bacon or sausage baps and plenty cups of tea would be provided along with some lunch if we run on a little later than planned. Thanks all, and I would owe you big time. Dave
Johnuk300 Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 Hi there Dave you do know that on the 12th the RBS Manx Rally will be on. But at the end of the day what are friends for I will pop down to give you a hand if needed. And I have 4pots on m car so you could try one of your wheels to see if they will fit. And I can see what black wheels would look like on my car. Donna Did say that she would help aswell but she has got to goto work..(women!)
cupradave Posted May 2, 2007 Author Posted May 2, 2007 Thanks John, I do realise that but I really have to get this bit done and finished before TT so my homestay guests have somewhere to park so dont reall have much of a choice. Like I said we should be done by lunchtime so there should be some time over to take in a stage or two. Besides the rally that matters is not til July during Scoobyfest [][] Have a couple of offers to try wheels on cars tomorrow night but we can certainly take one off again and offer it up to the 300 [Y]

Johnuk300 Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Well I will see them all on the friday night so I will pop down to give you a hand.. see you tomorrow night.
missey_d Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 John will still be able to help! He's not going accross for the funeral after all! so you can count him in! Unfortunately I'll be at work on Saturday morning so I won't be able to lend a hand! [] besides I'd only end up braking a nail and I don't wanna be doing that now do I !! LOL xDx
cupradave Posted May 3, 2007 Author Posted May 3, 2007 Slight change of plan Only going to have one pour on the saturday, delivered at 9am. This will be the second pour as I am getting the first delivered on Friday at 10am. I should be alright for the Friday in regards to manpower but if any of you are not working and feel you need to get out and do something constructive then feel free to pop down and lend a hand [] Having just the one pour first thing saturday morning means there is more time to get cleaned up and get out to watch some of the rally. Want to say a big thank you to John, Mark and Gareth (Gareth came to the meet last night with Dan) for volenteering (sp) to help out. How do you like your bacon guys? Red or brown sauce?
dan_1987 Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 I would offer to help to but am most probably working if not I will be there with gaz cheers
ghost101 Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 Dave I touch goats. oh crispy bacon and brown sauce for me please mmmmmmmmmmmm crispy bacon [] suddenly i'm in the mood for food!!! im working the friday im afraid but will see you saturday bright and breezy. u got barrows, rakes, and some form of a screeder sorted out? dont forget your wellies people you'll be sorry if you do!!! (watch me be the only one that forgets his now!!!) [:$][]
cupradave Posted May 4, 2007 Author Posted May 4, 2007 crispy bacon and brown it is then [] will have a digger with a big scoop (holds about 4 barrow loads in one go) and some barrows. Screeder sorted [Y] I even know its a 1-2-4 mix with extra sand and a 80-90 slump (I have no idea what this means) [:S] only thing I dont have is wellies [:|] oh and got your PM and replied
graeme_stuart Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 Im working Dave or otherwise i'd have give you a lift. Got a rugby fund raiser to do at King Bills. Have fun anyway [].
dooahhdoo Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 Dave, Count me in. I am expensive though. It will cost a bacon, egg and sausage bap with brown sauce. No snot on the egg but the yolk has to be runny [] Depending on the finish you want on the concrete you can get them to add some extra water before they drop it. This will give extra time before it goes off. You can also add water yourself and mix it in which helps. As mentioned you will need a screed sturdy enough for the job. A good item to have to hand as well is a large sheet(s) of ply and some visqueen as if things go wrong like punctures on the barrows, the mini digger breaks down etc etc you can always dump the stuff onto the ply and visqueen to save you being charged extra by the readymix people. How many Metres are you getting Saturday? How deep do you intend the concrete to be? Do you have a vibrator? [:$] One of these is used after the pour to remove all the air from the concrete giving you a really strong finish. Not necessary if its only an inch or so but if you are going thicker I would consider hiring one. They look just like dildos connected to a small engine. You could borrow my Wifes but if I am not there she will be using it Saturday morning []

You sound like you have done this before, the father in law has pretty much been project manager and from what I gather has everything in hand. I dont think i am too fussy on the finish, as long as we can spread it out and it is flat then I am cool with it. Was told to ask for extra sand in the mix. Will get some large sheets of ply from somewhere. What the hell is visqueen? is that an attachment for the vibrator? LOL We are having 3 cubic meters delivered Friday and the same again on the Saturday, it will be about 3" - 4" thick. By 'vibrator' do you mean one of these whacker plates? if so I can get one of them no problem and dont need to hire it (not hiring the digger either). If those who are coming on saturday want to arrive about half eight then there should be time for a tea break before we get started []
ghost101 Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 visqueen is blue polytheen comes in rolls usually. no a whacker plate would probably bury itsely in wet concrete would make an interesting talking point in years to come though [] no the vibrator is basically a two inch wide pole by about two foot long attatched to a small compressor if memory serves me correctly. then you just place it in the concrete at various places to vibrate all the air bubbles out we use them when pouring a slab for a house because of the weight involved. the main thing with it will be if its hot on the friday and saturday once its screeded up to hose it down occasionally so that it doesnt dry too rapidly this will cause it to shrink too much, crack and become weaker than it should be!! drove past your house last night on the way to peel so i know where im going now []
cupradave Posted May 11, 2007 Author Posted May 11, 2007 Well thats the first pour in, the cement was booked for 10:00 but the guy arrived at 09:40 and caught us a little off guard standing havin a cuppa Not exactly a professional job but hey its a learning experience This is tomorrows bit Little bit of prep work still required but we will be ready to rock when the fella gets here with the cement Off up the Grandstand now for a quick skeet (mainly to give my back a rest) see ya'll tomorrow bright and early, cement is booked for 09:00
graeme_stuart Posted May 12, 2007 Posted May 12, 2007 Whats under the sheet in the garage, anything nice ?[]
cupradave Posted May 12, 2007 Author Posted May 12, 2007 Whats under the sheet in the garage, anything nice ?[] This is what is under the sheet mate, not really anything to get the juices flowing on this forum. Need to find it a new home but am a bit reluctant to part with it, have had it 7 years now
dooahhdoo Posted May 12, 2007 Posted May 12, 2007 Just got in from a great night watching the rally to an email saying I have to work tomorrow. I have to be there for 9 for a change to be made so hopefully it will go without a hitch and I can just head out to yours for 9:15 all being well. Get started without me and I will turn up when it is all done!
