cullenmin Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 I believe that some speed camera's are in good places, for example the 50mph section on the A90 between Aberdeen and Dundee. This is because junctions on either side create extra hazards on a fast (70mph) piece of road where people often cross the motorway. I would agree 100% with speed camera's if they were signposted like parking places (Speed Camera 1 mile, 1/2 mile, etc). This would prove that the camera's are there for a real reason and not a money making scheme. This could then be followed by a much harder punishment because their location were clearly identified therefore no one has any excuse for speeding through them! This is some of my opinions on speed camera's, does anyone agree/disagree? Rich
andy Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 I have no objection to cameras in places such as outside schools or where children are likely to be playing etc - common sense places. The cameras you talk about, at the Laurencekirk junction, yup I agree they're needed as there have been some nasty accidents there and there is plenty warning about them, BUT, it would be better if the local authority (not the police, BTW) took the attitude Tayside Council have taken and replace the dangerous junctions with proper ones with flyovers. One thing I have found from being a regular lurker on Pepipoo and 5ive-o is that most cops agree with the average driver. They are against speed cameras in general and favour a return to proper road policing. However the overwhelming opinion I've seen is that they are so tied up in paperwork, targets and bureaucracy they couldn't even if it were possible. I saw an unmarked Volvo estate on the A90 today (Tayside car). Few years ago I used to see their unmarked Vectras somewhere en route pretty much every time I travelled the road. That's the first Tayside unmarked car I've seen for at least two years.
thewelsho Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 I just got to thinking... I have been against speed cameras for all the reasons stated (and agree with their installation also based on reasons stated), however, don't you think its easier to avoid getting caught by a camera than a cop (I don't mean driving around like a maniac, but we all go over from time to time)? They are easily seen, and any number of gadgets like Road Angel can spot them for us. Cops with hi-tech laser guns etc. means you have no chance! More cops = more chance of getting caught = more points / more cameras = less cops = less chance of getting caught = fewer points. So what if they are revenue makers, is that such a bad thing? Just a thought, once I chew it over I might change my mind! J
RA Dunk Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 see your point too welsho m8, but if your going say just over the limit and get pulled from a cop car most of the time you will tend to get a verbal warning and let off (as long as your just over the limit and not doing silly speeds), with speed cameras its 3 points and 60 quid end off [:@]! some good points so far keep em comming [Y]

But everytime I have been pulled with the cops for speeding I got ticketed. I was lucky last time in that the PF never pursued it. First points I ever got was 12 years ago on my wedding day. Heading up the road to get ready, was a bit absent minded and drove through a red light pedestrian crossing at about 20mph. I was spotted by two beat cops and they gave chase on foot! I thought, ach well they will have my plate, might as well stop. So I pulled over and waited for the two cops to catch me me up, further up the road. One was an older guy with his sargeant stripes and the other guy had his book out. He was ready to go off on one and I said look, that's why I stopped to acknowledge my mistake. He then instructed his colleague to book me, I said, "Look man, its my wedding day, I got a litle absent minded we all do it. No harm done, can we then not apply the spirit of the law rather than the letter of the law?" The other guy softened, his hand relaxed, the pen moved off the page and his arms were on their way down to his sides. The Sarge's response was, "DO HIM Alex!" And so he did! 3 points £30 fine and a TS30 endorsement! Jobsworth prat! but hey, I still love the cops man, just not him!
RA Dunk Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 i have been let off before with a warning so it swings both ways i suppose, but theres none of that with cameras though, your guilty and thats it, i kept a clean license for 16-17 years till recently then got nabbed twice!! [:|]
