frank c Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Right folks, need some advice for getting these fitted before i give Mr F a call for a mapping session. How long should it take a garage to fit these to my car and roughly how much should i expect to pay and are they really worth fitting? It's the only thing keeping me back from fitting the other parts i have before trying to get a booking. cheers
euan_r Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 headers are really easy. up pipe not so good will need turbo and downpipe removed if original heat shield is still on up pipe. what u fitting in exchange? [] ported
WUZ Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Depends on whether you want to salvage the OE heatshields on the OE Headers. Look at around 5 hours to remove Headers/Uppipe/Turbo, port andf Polish ALL 3 ITEMS, and refit To remove and replace with new headers and uppipe, your around 2.75 - 3 hours! Russell

I have p&p wrapped OE headers to fit. Can i leave out the heat shield with these ( flame suit ready ) lol and can i leave out fitting the up pipe if it's too much hassle ? I will be fitting - Hyperflow TMIC, F/pump, OE wrapped and ported Headers, APS CAK and 04 Hybrid Turbo (hopefully) to go with my decat. As above , do i need the up pipe fitted ? cheers
WUZ Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Frank - your removing the Turbo to fit the Hybrid TD04 so there is only 2 nuts to remove at top of Uppipe ( securing it to support brackets on Gearbox and engine) so it's an extra 5 minutes to remove and replace it whilst the Turbo and headers are off. No need for the heat shields on the headers if they are wrapped TBH. FIT THE UPPIPE! - get the OE Heat shield off it andf WRAP it first! Russell

harvey_smith Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 Some are easier to do than others. A typical time with ramps and proper tools is under 2.5 hrs. Some may be less than 2 hrs while others can be 3 hrs. Fixed price here is £70 to swap O/E for ported. The up-pipe with CAT or heatshield can be a problem on some cars. Easy solution is to undo the two engine mounting nuts, put a bit of wood under the sump and jack the engine an inch or so and the up-pipe drops out. Spraying the fasteners with WD40 or similar, the night before and again before the job starts is worthwhile and will make the job easier.
harvey_smith Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Just had this drawn to my attention again. Porting the O/E up-pipe must help but the up-pipe is a constriction and is best replaced with a purpose designed up-pipe to suit the ported headers. If properly heat wraped with good performance material there is no point in trying to refit the heat shields. Indeed it is good practice to remove the lugs and brackets that attach the shields. There is more to it than just openning the ports out or bevelling them and to do the job properly, using carbide burrs for roughing out, removing lugs and brackets with air tools, caustic hot wash to remove particles, wrap and wire, hydraulic ramp and air or battery driver tools for re assembly/installation is a long, hard, full days work. Without air tools and hydraulic ramp it will take up a good part of the second day.
